We would like to inform you about a workshop that we believe may be of interest to you.
The workshop is titled "Cooperation around design and development of ICT for multiple-mode access to public services". It will be held at the ECSCW conference, Bonn, 16.09.2001
The following is a summary of a more extensive call for participation which you can find at http://swt-www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/research/ecscw2001/

COOPERATION AROUND DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF ICT FOR MULTIPLE-MODE ACCESS TO PUBLIC SERVICES
Workshop Theme and Background
Today, municipalities and other public agencies are making more and more information and interactive services accessible to the public via Internet/intranet applications. As a consequence of this development, public agencies are becoming increasingly aware of new and serious challenges to traditional ways of managing and presenting information within and between public service organizations, and in contacts with the citizens.
Simultaneously, the rapid development of mobile ICT is resulting in the need to take into consideration multi-mode access to public services (via cellular phones, PDA:s, public information kiosks, SMS, chat, e-mail, through help-desks providing generalist support functions, as well as through other, more traditional channels and media) and to design support for this diversity from the start.
Thus there is a growing need to cultivate and further develop cooperation in providing seamless integration of services from different organizations. We need to look at work practice and design in use, as well as the development of an integrated technical infrastructure for services to the citizens.
Workshop Content & Organisation
In this workshop, we will focus on on-going design and development of ICT for multi-mode access to public services. How well do the technologies currently in use support the cooperation within and between various sectors - both public, non-profit and commercial - which seems to be becoming more wide-spread as diversity and demands increase? What new concepts, models and metaphors are developing to grasp the growing complexity of ICT design for public services? Starting in the experiences and case studies brought to the workshop by the participants, we will structure the discussion around the main themes of interest raised in the position papers.
Intended audience
Intended participants are primarily computer scientists, social scientists and practitioners interested in cooperative work and computer support in public services.
How to register
In order to register for this workshop, please send a position paper (1-4 pages, in English) at the latest by August 10th, to bleek@informatik.uni-hamburg.de. In the position paper, we expect you to briefly present your own experience in the field and list the themes you would be most interested in discussing at the workshop. The number of participants is limited to 20. In case of massive interest, selection criteria will be enthusiasm and aspects of integration of ICT design and use, as presented in the position papers. Information about acceptance will be sent out by e-mail by August 24th. Accepted papers will be made available via Internet for all workshop participants ten days before the workshop.
Time Schedule
10 August 2001 Position papers are due. 24 July 2001 Notification of acceptance; position papers available from the workshop website 16 Sep 2001 The workshope takes place at ECSCW 2001 in Bonn
