These considerations will be the focus of a special issue of : the Empirical Software Engineering journal. Our goal in editing this : issue is to raise awareness and initiate discussions of research ethics : in the empirical software engineering community. : : For this special issue, we encourage submissions on ethical issues : raised by research in empirical software engineering. Topics could : include but are not limited to: : : *Ethical dilemmas presented as cases; i.e., either fictional or real : examples (if real, however, please disguise the participantsÂ’ : identities). : *Issues involving informed consent, such as how it is obtained and : who must consent (e.g., when analyzing source code). : *Guidelines for conducting experimental or observational studies. : *The protection of companies from harm when making data public. : *Ethical issues raised by analyzing open source software. : *Design and reporting techniques that make particular research : practices more acceptable from an ethics perspective (e.g., how to : protect identity with low N). : : Papers can be based on theoretical or analytic work in ethics, or on : personal experience. The motivation for this special issue is to : initiate a discussion on ethics in empirical software engineering; not : to solve all the ethical dilemmas that may arise, but to start a : discussion on them. : : Papers due: September 1, 2000 : : Web submission will be available in July. Further information is : available at: wwwsel.iit.nrc.ca/EMSEethics/ : : If you have any questions regarding submissions, please contact one of : the guest editors at the emails below. : : Janice Singer : National Research Council Canada : janice.singer@nrc.ca : : Norm Vinson : National Research Council Canada : norm.vinson@nrc.ca : : ===== Start of ISWorld List Footer ===== : ISWorld list is a service of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) : (http://www.aisnet.org) hosted at University College Dublin.
