Call for Papers AMCIS Mini-track: Collaboration, Knowledge Sharing, and Decision Making in Virtual Work Groups [Track: Decision Support, Knowledge and Data Management Systems (SIGDSS)]
15th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) San Francisco, California August 6 - 9, 2009 San Francisco Marriott
Description: With the globalization of business, virtual work groups have become indispensable for many business organizations. These groups include individuals who are dispersed geographically, organizationally and/or temporally and are brought together by information and communication technologies to accomplish one or more organizational tasks. Although the virtual work groups offer enormous potential to share skills and knowledge of dispersed individuals, several challenges shape their performance. The cultural and functional diversity of the team members, the complexity of the tasks, the time zone differences, and the richness of the communicating media pose critical challenges to establish effective collaboration in these groups. In addition, the outcome controls (such as, time pressure and reward), behavioral factors (motivation and distraction), and the perception of the work environment also shape interaction and outcome of the members of the virtual work groups. Finally, as collaboration technology enables the functioning of the virtual work groups, it is important to understand how the functionalities of the technology and their effective appropriation shapes group performance. Although prior research in information systems (IS) has addressed some of these issues, a cohesive body of knowledge on the effective functioning of virtual work groups is yet to emerge. This mini-track will provide a platform to achieve this objective. The emphasis of the mini-track will be on the decision-making, cognitive conflict, judgment, and negotiation types of tasks performed by the virtual work groups in organizations.
Suggested topics for the mini-track include, but are not limited to: Processes of collaboration in virtual work groups Collaboration in cross-cultural virtual work groups Functionalities of technologies to support collaboration in virtual work groups Appropriation of collaboration technologies in virtual work groups Technologies to support social presence, media synchronicity, and communication effectiveness in virtual work groups Perception of work environment (trust, cohesiveness, openness, and respect) in virtual work groups Technologies and protocols to develop favorable perceptions in virtual work groups Conflicts in virtual work groups Technologies and protocols to support conflict resolution in virtual work groups Negotiation support in virtual work groups Leadership and decision making in virtual work groups Information and knowledge sharing in virtual work groups Technologies to facilitate information and knowledge sharing Knowledge conversion in virtual work groups Development of common understanding in virtual work groups Collective norms and beliefs in virtual work groups Development and representation of collective memory in virtual work groups
