Utilizing Information Technology in Developing Strategic Alliances Among Organizations. A book edited by Dr. Salustiano Martinez-Fierro, Dr. Jose A. Medina-Garrido and Dr. Jose Ruiz-Navarro, University of Cadiz, Spain
Introduction: In these complex times, strategic alliances are one of the most significant tools used today in business, especially by multinational firms. Such alliances have certainly been around for a long time, and surveys show that today the majority of large organizations use them. The phenomenon of alliances and networks represents an important shift in the organizational practices of companies. Increasingly firms are focusing on their core competencies, which has meant that complementary competencies must now be obtained from other firms. In a world where information systems and e-business are used by most multinational firms, a guide is necessary for managers to understand the strategic impact of alliances and networks and the role IT plays in them.
The Overall Objective of the Book: There are some works on the importance of information technology (IT) in alliances and networks, but there is little in the literature that explains in detail the role of IT in the formation of interorganizational relationships. There are gaps with respect to what IT actually does and how it makes possible, or at least facilitates, the operation of the network. This book is divided into two parts. The first part includes theoretical models that explain the role of IT in the formation and development of alliances and networks. The second part offers tools and case studies for managers and practitioners to know how and when to implement IT in interorganizational relationships.
The Target Audience: This book is expected to be an important guide for managers and senior managers involved in international trade and interorganizational relationships. In addition, it should prove interesting for those managers in small and medium-sized firms attempting to make the most of emerging opportunities by supporting their core capabilities with complementary capabilities belonging to other firms. It will also be relevant to consultants and students interested in strategic and IT issues. Finally, this book will be a resource for students and researchers in business and management studies, both as a theoretical guide and as a handbook for successfully governing alliances and networks.
Recommended topics include but are not limited to the following: Globalization and alliances and networks Alliances and networks as a source of sustainable competitive advantages Interorganizational relationships in the information society Information technology as a support of alliances and networks The process of formation and development of alliances The specifics of networks Differences between American and European alliances Theoretical perspectives to study the integration of information technology in alliances or networks Strategic alliances and networks in e-business Entrepreneurial alliances Case studies
