CALL FOR PAPERS

AMCIS TUTORIAL AND WORKSHOP ON PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY/THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE

Detroit, USA

Thursday, August 4, 2011

PROGRAM PRESENTERS AND FACILITATORS

Maureen Linker, Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy, University of Michigan Dearbon

Nik R. Hassan, Associate Professor, Finance and MIS, University of Minnesota Duluth

AMCIS 2011 WORKSHOP REVIEW OF PHILOSOPHY-RELATED PAPERS

Following up from the SIGPhilosophy meeting at ICIS 2010 in St. Louis, MO, this tutorial and workshop is an initiative from the SIG to reach out to AIS members who are interested in philosophical topics in IS, or wish to brush up on the foundations of IS from the philosophical perspective. We are fortunate to have a philosophy-trained presenter from the local community who will share with us her insights into historical and contemporary aspects of science and technology studies (STS) and theory of knowledge.

As part of the tutorial and workshop program (please refer to program outline), we invite prospective attendees to submit their philosophy-related works, or works-in-progress to be reviewed by other attendees and the program facilitators. Attendees are expected to read the papers before attending the workshop and will be expected to provide written reviews to authors. Discussions surrounding the reviews will be held in the second half of the full-day tutorial. Student papers will be given special consideration.

The target audience expected to benefit from this program include but not limited to:

1.     Anyone interested in the relevance of philosophy for information systems

2.     Students starting their doctoral programs

3.     PhD candidates who are completing their chapters of their proposals or dissertations

4.     Authors writing philosophy or conceptual papers for future conferences and journals

5.     Students and faculty wishing to brush up on the theory of knowledge and the philosophy of science

6.     Students and faculty interested in social and moral aspects of science and technology (including race, gender, environmental concerns, funding decisions, national security issues, etc.)

Any philosophy, epistemology, theory of knowledge or related papers are welcomed.  Submit papers to Nik R. Hassan via email (nhassan@d.umn.edu) before July 15, 2011 with an intention to attend the tutorial/workshop at AMCIS 2011.

Please include "CFP AMCIS 2011 SIGPhil Workshop" in the subject header of the email.
