MINI-TRACK: The Dark Side of Social Media
TRACK: Social Computing
DESCRIPTION
The challenges and problems of social media have drawn increasing
scholarly attention in recent years, such interest is further
fueled by more people turning to social media with the COVID-19
pandemic outbreak and the social distancing. There are pressing
questions that remain unanswered and call for further
investigation. This minitrack invites papers that identify and
address the dark side of social media, the aspects of social media
that negatively impact people’s personal lives, disrupt the
operation of organizations, and mangle the social fabrics. The
goal is to raise awareness of the negative aspects of social media
use, address the challenges of maintaining a safe and productive
environment, and create social wellbeing for the greater good.
Empirical, theoretical, or position papers are welcome in this
track. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to the
following:
- Privacy concerns and social media
- Cyberbullying
- Social media addiction and isolation
- Social media and security
- Impact of social media on physical and mental health
- Social media and productivity/job performance
- Effect of social media on education
- Social media on business communication
- Impact of social media on democracy
- Impact of social media on public opinion polarization
- Impact of social media on law enforcement
- Social media and personal relationship
- Social media and politics
- Social media, face to face interaction, and personal fulfillment
- Social media and society
- Online identity, scam, hoax, and phishing
- Fake news and disinformation
- Ethical, legal issues and freedom of speech in social media
SUBMISSION TYPES
• Full papers must not exceed 10 pages.
• Emergent Research Forum (ERF) papers must not exceed 5 pages.
All submissions must conform to the AMCIS 2022 submission template
and will be peer-reviewed using a double-blind system.
IMPORTANT DATES
* January 21, 2022: Manuscript submissions begin
* March 1, 2022: Full papers and ERF submissions are due at 5pm
EST
* April 15, 2022: Program Chair decisions are sent to authors
