Forwarded message from [mkeil@GSU.EDU (Mark Keil)] sent originally on Wed, 5 Apr 2000 17:42:04 -0400: : CALL FOR PAPERS : Special Issue on "A Critical Analysis of ERP Systems: Organizational Impacts" : The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems : : The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems, or DATA BASE for short, is : putting together a special issue on A Critical Analysis of ERP Systems: : Organizational Impacts. ERP may be defined as an integrated IT based enterprise : resource management system. It supports the management of all enterprise : resources including information, people, money, products and services, : material, and equipment. And it provides tools for the central control of all : business activities and procedures. It has been argued that the move to ERP : systems is one of the most important IS developments since the advent of the : general use computer. ERP requires changes in management decision structures, : evaluation and measurement systems which in turn affect organizational : authority, role responsibilities, job structures and incentive schemes. There : follows a cascading impact on organizational culture, values and beliefs as : well as modes of thinking about and solving problems. The sheer scale and : complexity of organizational and technology change suggested by ERP is : monumental. : : The special issue on A Critical Analysis of ERP Systems: Organizational Impacts : is motivated by several factors. Whilst there is an emerging literature that : has begun to question the nature of ERP systems, nevertheless, much of the : research is driven by a managerial agenda that offers a one-sided view of a : diverse range of organizational contexts. This position trades on the view that : ERP implementations are situated within predictable and controlled contexts : which, by definition, neglect to problematise ERP implementations. We actively : encourage contributions that adopt a critical theoretic position. In ERP terms, : this will be papers which question the implicit assumption that ERP systems per : se are inherently good, offering a plethora of benefits for the range of : stakeholders within the organization. For the purpose of this special issue, we : will define a critical theoretic position as one that focuses on the conflicts : and contradictions in contemporary organizations and society. It is a position : that generally critiques the constraints or alienating conditions of the status : quo, and seeks to be emancipatory. For a bibliography of critical theoretic : work in our field refer to: : http://www.auckland.ac.nz/msis/isworld/critical.htm : We hope to publish papers that encompass a variety of topics, and we are open : to many research approaches. Such papers include, but are not limited to: : Is ERP an appropriate business strategy? For example, should one adopt a : generic 'best-of-breed' reference model given the need to : differentiate organizational competencies? If ERP requires business process : reengineering, how does this impact organizational culture : and identity? : The impact of ERP implementations on organizational IS departments. For : example, do existing IS development methods become obsolete? Do traditional IS : departments become redundant? : A critical view of ERP implementation to include ERP retreat, abandonment and : failure case studies, which provide insight as to : what constitutes success and failure in wider organizational settings. : Is there a specific cultural tradition embedded within the technology? If so, : can this be transposed globally? : Is the technology in itself neutral, or does it require particular patterns : of social relations to support it? Is it more compatible : with certain types of social relations than others? : Measuring the social costs and benefits of ERP systems. For example, labour : costs are often cited as one benefit of ERP implementation with managerial and : white-collar 'head count' reduction along with cutbacks in the number of : unskilled workers. What are the ramifications of this within the organization? : What are the benefits and drawbacks for an organization utilising ERP systems : as compared with those organizations using traditional, : customised ISD? : What is the nature of the issues arising from centralization of information : control? : What is the role of the end-user with ERP design and implementation projects? : : What are the implications for power redistribution via ERP systems. Who are : the winners and losers with the new system? : Are there any shifts in structural relationships between management and rank : and file workers as ERP systems are implemented? : What are the new directions for ERP given the development of e-commerce and : intranet infrastructures? : : We would prefer research submissions which are empirically based as opposed to : purely theoretical research. We encourage papers from both the intensive (e.g., : qualitative) and quantitative research traditions. Papers pursuing either : interpretive or positivist understanding in an empirical context, will be : assessed according to criteria that are normally applied to such research in : high-quality IS journals. Thus one should present manuscripts in which: the : research questions and research design are well-motivated and stated clearly; : hypotheses (as appropriate) are clearly defined; research methods are : identified, defined, and where necessary, explained; the research results are : documented, and; the implications are clearly related to the findings. : : For those of you who don't know, DATA BASE is the official publication of the : Special Interest Group for Management Information : Systems (SIGMIS) of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). It is the : third most widely cited ACM publication and 22nd among all : journals listed in the Social Science Index. In addition, DATA BASE is now : indexed under ABI-Inform at ProQuest which gives the journal's : contents considerable visibility. It is a high quality refereed journal : regularly listed among the top 20 journals for purposes of promotion and tenure : of information systems faculty at universities. : : Instructions for submitting papers: : 1. Submitting in hardcopy form.
