Minitrack: Information Technologies in Online Education

Online education is gaining its momentum in America’s higher
education. Statistics show that around 20% of undergraduate students
were enrolled in more than one online class in 2008. Online education
has many advantages over traditional education, the most obvious being
accessibility and affordability. With advanced information
technologies, students can overcome barriers of time, location, and
disability. In addition, traditionally underserved population, such as
adult, married with children, with full time job, can afford the
higher education opportunities. Despite its promise, online education
has many intrinsic and/or extrinsic problems as well. For example,
there are still unaddressed issues regarding the quality and learning
effectiveness of online education.
Information technologies are essential to online education. It is
important to understand the role of technology in education. Also,
effective platforms and technologies are essential for online
education. Our mini track provides an opportunity to share academic
ideas and practical cases among information scientists, academic
instructors, system developers, and content providers.

In this mini track, we are looking for academic thought and practical
cases in the following topics:

•       Legal and ethical issues in online education

•       Hybrid formats of online education
•       Emerging trends in online education
•       Surveys of online education
•       Online learning theories
•       Development of online faculty
•       Social media and social networking in online education

Important Dates:
•       January 2, 2012: Manuscript Central will start accepting paper
submissions
•       March 1, 2012: (11:59 PM Pacific time zone): Deadline for
paper submissions
•       April 2, 20012: Authors will be notified of acceptances on or
about this date
•       April 20, 2012: (11:59 PM Pacific time zone): For accepted
papers, camera ready copy due
•       June 12, 2012: Last day for AMCIS 2012 Early Registration
•       July 13, 2012: Deadline for making hotel room reservations
•       July 24, 2012: Last day for AMCIS 2012 Regular Registration
