CALL FOR PAPERS (SPECIAL ISSUE) INFORMATION AND ORGANIZATION Editor-in-Chief, Daniel Robey, PhD
Green IT/IS: The Role of Information Technology/Systems in Environmentally Sustainable Organizations
Deadline for submission of papers: June 30th, 2009
Guest Co-Editors: Marie-Claude Boudreau, University of Georgia (mcboudre@terry.uga.edu) Susan J. Winter, Portland State University (susanwinter59@gmail.com)
Recently, issues of environmental, social and cultural sustainability have received increased attention in the media and in business. Little more than a moral concern in the past, sustainability is now on the radar screen of many organizations. Indeed, these organizations are seeking to change their poor environmental practices resulting in many forms of waste (e.g., unused resources, energy inefficiency, noise, and emissions) while improving productivity, reducing costs, and enhancing profitability. The IT industry has also shown great interest in sustainability, singling out Green IT as the most important strategic technology for 2008. It is also expected that the Green IT service market will reach nearly $5 billion by 2013.
A growing body of research on environmental sustainability has been developing in the fields of management, engineering and ecology. However, hardly any research on this topic can be identified in the field of information systems. Information systems have been the greatest force for productivity improvement in the last half century, offering enormous convenience and significant benefits. Though information systems have been implicated in serious environmental threats, they could be of profound importance in the pursuit of organizational, environmental, social and cultural sustainability. Indeed, underpinning many sustainability initiatives is some form of computing power and intelligent systems. It is clear that the adoption and use of information technologies and information systems have sustainability implications. Future IT and IS innovations may expand and exaggerate these effects. Given that little research attention has been paid to the role of IT/IS in sustainability, it is unclear how Green IT/IS can or will contribute to or impede sustainability efforts. In addition, organizations may not fully appreciate the potential role of IT/IS in sustainability.
The goal of this special issue is to consider how theory can inform green IT/IS practice, what sustainability lessons can be learned from green IT/IS practice, and how green IT/IS can play a role in sustainability.
We invite high quality articles related (but not limited to) such topics as:
1. Development of green IT/IS infrastructure, systems, products, applications, policies, practices, etc. 2. The role of IT/IS in sustainability 3. Awareness, adoption and diffusion of green IT/IS 4. Emergence of green IT in the greentech industry 5. The emergence of regional and global de-facto green IT standards 6. Links among green IT/IS, sustainability practices, organizational and environmental performance 7. The design, implementation, and use of IT/IS to reduce organizations environmental impact 8. Issues surrounding the assessment of information systems sustainability 9. The use of IT/IS to change human behaviours towards sustainable business practices
Both quantitative and qualitative studies that contribute to our understanding of the role of IT/IS in sustainability are encouraged. Cross-disciplinary studies and those that make significant contributions to theory building and practice are particularly welcome.
Papers for consideration for publication in this special issue should be submitted by email by June 30th, 2009 and will be double blind reviewed. Submissions should conform to the Information and Organization guidelines.
Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to http://ees.elsevier.com/inforg/. Please provide a cover letter stating that the submission is for the special issue.
Contact either of the Special Issue editors for further submission instructions.
