ITU-T Kaleidoscope 2011 The fully networked human? - Innovations for future networks and services - is the fourth in a series of peer-reviewed academic conferences organized by ITU-T that bring together a wide range of views from universities, industry and research institutions. The aim of Kaleidoscope conferences is to identify Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for which the development of standards can turn innovations into successful products and services. The merger of the real world and the digital world can generate enormous improvements in our daily lives, but also raises some legitimate concerns. Ever smaller and smarter sensors proliferate, wireless networks are omnipresent, smart phones are abundant. Future devices will not only be able to measure everything from users' whereabouts to their physical well-being but also to control just about anything from a distance. ICT has the potential to greatly improve the life of persons with disabilities by enhancing their access to communications. Through implanted sensors, e-health applications will support senior citizens communicating automatically their medical data to care providers... but what if the information falls into the wrong hands? Modern heating systems at home would be programmed, via hands-free devices, while driving to work... but what happens if this is done via a text message distracting the driver? How can we make increasingly complex devices user-friendly? The design architecture of future ICTs, as well as the services and applications that arise, will have a significant impact on individuals and on human existence, ranging from cognitive functioning, health, security to national economic development and, more generally, the society of the future. Technology should be designed to benefit humans, not the other way around. Human-centric ICTs must be promoted in research and development circles. The fully networked human? - Innovations for future networks and services - is calling for original, academic, technical papers offering innovative and bold approaches to foster the research and development of human-centric ICTs as we move towards future networks and services.
Audience: ITU-T Kaleidoscope 2011 is targeted at all specialists with a role in the field including researchers, academics, students, engineers, regulators, top decision-makers and thinkers from all over the world who look into the future.
Date and venue: December 2011, South Africa
Submission of papers: Prospective authors, from countries that are members of ITU, are invited to submit complete, original papers with a maximum length of 4500 words within eight pages including summary and references, using the template available on the event website. All papers will be reviewed through a double-blind, peer-review process and handled electronically; see http://itu-kaleidoscope.org/2011 for the online submission (EDAS). The deadlines for paper submission are highlighted below.
Deadlines: Submission of full paper proposals: 15 May 2011 Notification of paper acceptance: 30 July 2011 Submission of camera-ready accepted papers: 10 September 2011 Publication and presentation
Accepted papers will be presented during the event, published in the proceedings and made available through the IEEE Xplore. The best papers will be invited for evaluation for potential publication in the IEEE Communications Magazine.
Awards: Awards of USD 5k, 3k and 2k will be granted to selected best papers, as judged by the organizing and programme committees. In addition, young authors presenting accepted papers will also receive a Young Author Recognition certificate.
