PROFES, the International Conference on Product-Focused Software Process Improvement, is among the top recognised software development and process improvement conferences. The 18th edition of the international conference will be held for the first time in Innsbruck, Austria, from November 29 to December 01, 2017. PROFES organisation is composed of local and international recognised researchers in software engineering. The objective of PROFES is to provide a premier forum for practitioners, researchers, and educators to present and discuss experiences, ideas, innovations, as well as concerns related to professional software process improvement motivated by product and service quality needs.
*** TOPICS OF INTEREST ***
PROFES conferences encourage the exchange of ideas that help explore, understand, and model phenomena in software engineering from the point of view of process-product relationships. Traditionally, PROFES provides topics, which are up-to-date, important, and interesting to both practitioners and researchers. To ensure that PROFES will retain its high standards and that it will keep focusing on the most relevant research issues, we are looking for original research on current trends in software engineering aspects addressing products and services.
The topics of interest include, but are not restricted to, the following: - Process modelling, management, assessment and improvement - Value-driven software development - Processes for software innovation - Software analytics with actionable insights on software products and processes - Predictive models for software engineering tasks - Infrastructure and processes for iterative or incremental software delivery - Release planning - Continuous deployment - Development approaches using customer feedback - Product quality models for software, system, and services - Project management techniques - Methods and processes for developing cloud-based systems and services - Software development for Cyber Physical Systems - Agile and lean methods and processes - Global or distributed software development - Processes and methods for COTS and open source development - Service engineering processes - Software business models
Further, PROFES encourages the submission of industrial experience reports as well as of empirical studies reporting, e.g., on the application of respective methods or technologies in real settings.
*** PAPER SUBMISSION ***
We invite submissions of full papers (max. 16 pages) and short papers (max. 8 pages) related to all the topics of interest of the conference. The short papers track provides a forum where especially new and ongoing research can be presented, communicated, and discussed. Accepted short papers should include initial validation, although the results do not have to be as complete as for full papers. Papers (full papers and short papers) that address collaborations between industry and academia, case studies as well as experience reports on any of the conference themes are particularly welcome. We also encourage the submission of secondary studies on topics of interest with the condition that the submissions should contain a synthesis of findings.
All submitted papers will undergo a rigorous peer review process. Papers will be selected based on originality, quality, soundness and relevance. All contributions must be original, not published, accepted or submitted for publication elsewhere. Submitted papers must conform to the Springer LNCS author guidelines. All papers should be submitted in PDF format through EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=profes2017
Details on the submissions for the different tracks can be taken from our website: https://profes2017.q-e.at
*** WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS ***
PROFES will host workshops and tutorials that will complement and enhance the main conference program, offering a wider knowledge perspective around the conference topics.
Workshops and Tutorials are expected to be in tune with the topics of interest of the conference. Workshop or tutorial proposals on interesting topics related to ongoing research or industrial projects are welcome. Tutorials and workshops are either half or full day. Accepted tutorials can be documented in short summary papers (4 pages) which will be published in the main conference proceedings. Papers that will be accepted for the workshops can be also published in the main conference proceedings (depending on the preferences of the workshop organisers). The maximum length of workshop papers is 12 pages.
Please use the following format for workshop proposals:
* Title (including acronym or short title) * Name, biography and contact information of workshop organisers * Abstract (max. 200 words), suitable for publication on the conference web site and inclusion in conference registration materials * Description, to be used for evaluation, including theme, goals, relevance and format * Target audience and desired number of participants (minimum and maximum) * Paper selection procedure and publication (organisers have the option of publishing accepted workshop papers in the main conference proceedings, Springer LNCS format) * Special Requirements, such as facilities, equipment, and materials, if applicable
Please use the following format for tutorial proposals:
* Title (including optional short title) * Name, biography and contact information of tutorial presenter(s) * Abstract (max. 200 words), suitable for publication on the conference web site and inclusion in conference registration materials * Description, to be used for evaluation, including (1) covered topics, (2) learning objectives, (3) tutorial format * Intended timeframe (half or full day) and tentative agenda * Target audience, prerequisites and desired number of participants (minimum and maximum) * Special requirements, such as facilities, equipment, and materials, if applicable
Proposals should be prepared using the LNCS template and sent via email in PDF format to both Workshop Chairs:
* Dietmar Pfahl (dietmar.pfahl<at>ut.ee) * Rudolf Ramler (rudolf.ramler<at>scch.at)
Please include "PROFES 2017 Tutorial [or Workshop] Proposal" in the Subject field. If you are proposing several tutorials/workshops, please send each proposal in a separate email.
*** POSTERS AND TOOL DEMOS ***
To promote the interaction among participating researchers and practitioners, we will provide a forum for poster presentations and tool demonstrations. We explicitly invite submissions of high-quality summaries of 4 pages which will be included into the conference proceedings.
Posters may present topics related to all facets of PROFES and range from open calls for collaborations to the presentation of work in progress. We explicitly encourage also PhD students to submit posters on their research topic.
Tool demos shall demonstrate any innovative tool or current tool development endeavours yielding early prototypes to foster lively discussions. We explicitly encourage tool demos to include live demonstrations with the opportunity for the participants to gain hands-on experience based on predefined use cases.
Submitted papers must conform to the Springer LNCS author guidelines. All proposals should be submitted in PDF format through EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=profes2017
*** OPEN SCIENCE AND RESEARCH COMMITMENT ***
PROFES 2017 has explicitly committed itself as the first conference in our field to take the first step in fostering open science in our community to increase the accessibility, reproducibility, and replicability of our research outcomes. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Open Access Support: Authors of accepted papers will be supported in self-archiving their pre- and post-prints in open, preserved repositories to which we will link from the published conference program. Please note that the choice to use open access or not will not affect the review process for the submissions (and can also be made after the acceptance notification).
- Open Data Policy: Papers which rely on empirical data should - within the limits of existing non-disclosure agreements - disclose the _anonymised and curated_ data to increase reproducibility and replicability. The latest point in time for the data disclosure is the deadline for the camera ready deadline (after acceptance notification). Authors who cannot disclose industrial or otherwise non-public data should provide an explicit statement in the paper.
The steering principle is that research output should be accessible to the public, and that empirical studies should be reproducible. Please note that we are still experimenting with open science principles and strongly rely on your support and also feedback. To actively support authors in the open science endeavours, we have assigned specific open science co-chairs. Further details are provided and will be continuously updated on our website: https://profes2017.q-e.at/open-science-practices/
