WITS 2012 Call for Papers
22nd Workshop on Information

The 22nd Annual Workshop on
Information Technologies and Systems will be held in Orlando,
Florida, on December 15-16, 2012, just prior to the
International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS). The
purpose of the workshop is to provide a forum for discussion and
interaction among scholars with research interests in the
cutting edge issues of information technologies and systems. The
theme of the conference is “Digital Innovation for
Sustainability.”
Sustainability is
the capacity of systems to endure over time. Even though this
definition is intended mostly for ecosystems, it obviously
extends to systems created and impacted by humans such as
information systems. Unconstrained human economic development
has lead not only to destruction of delicate ecosystems, but
in the end has contributed to volatile economic cycles and
economic damage from natural disasters. Information technology
is both a contributor and a potential solution to the
challenges of managing sustainable development. Better
decision support for public policy planners, businesses and
consumers can lead to better long-term decisions. Examples are
numerous and include inefficiencies in power systems which can
be identified by data mining tools and solutions which can be
generated by optimization. Virtualization, used properly, can
reduce the carbon footprint of existing information systems.
Understanding the economic and environmental impact of
information systems, can lead to greater sustainable adoption,
use, and retirement of information systems and technologies.
Since it is a workshop, WITS
actively solicits papers describing novel research ideas that
may be at a relatively early stage of development. Research
topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Submitted research papers are limited
to 6 single-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font, 8.5" by
11" pages (including tables, figures, and references and 1"
margins on all sides). All submissions will be subject to
double blind review. Selection for presentation at the
workshop and publication in the proceedings will be based on
originality, contribution to the field, and workshop interest.
Research paper
submissions must be sent in electronic form using the WITS
2012 submission system (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=wits2012). The electronic
submission system, as well as instructions, will be available
in July 2012.
Research prototypes, and
instructional technology submissions should be sent directly
to the prototype demo chair, Kaushik Dutta (duttak@nus.edu.sg). Prototype submissions should include
links to any associated software or demo. We will accept
instructional technology submissions that emphasize innovative
use of IT in the classroom as well as innovations in teaching
IS/IT topics. All accepted prototypes and instructional
technology papers will be presented as posters during the
workshop.
PANEL
ORGANIZATION
In the last two
decades many new business ventures related to information
technology have launched. Many of the innovative ideas in IS
research, including sustainability-related topics, have the
potential to start new businesses. The panel’s charge is to
discuss entrepreneurship opportunities in converting IS research
to viable businesses.
We welcome
additional panel proposals. Please submit your panel proposals
directly to the program co-chairs.
JOURNAL PUBLICATION OPPORTUNITY
Authors of selected workshop papers and
research prototypes will be invited to submit complete
versions of their research for review and possible publication
in a special issue of ACM Transactions on Management
Information Systems (ACM TMIS, http://tmis.acm.org/). We will invite papers for the review of
this special issue.
