Minitrack: Economics of Data and Information Quality



DESCRIPTION

A recent press release by Gartner Inc. claims that “There is not a company on the planet that does not have a data quality problem…and where a company does recognise they have a problem, they often underestimate the size of it.” The staggering scale of the potential economic impact of a data quality deficiency is vividly illustrated by the current “foreclosure fiasco”—the unfolding turmoil over the accuracy of foreclosure documents at the Bank of America and other financial institutions in the US. Evidently, organizations have been slow to recognize and respond to the data quality challenge. This slow pace is often explained by the high costs of quality improvements, and the general difficulty of assessing the economic consequences of the quality factor. The economic aspect of data quality has been drawing a growing research interest in recent years, but research on t
his critical perspective is still rare. 

We solicit papers that address the economics of data and information quality in organizations. Such a paper may, for instance:

•	Study the economic outcomes of the data quality factor in a chosen organizational setting
•	Explore the costs of data quality improvement in a chosen setting 
•	Examine concepts, metrics, models, methods, and/or products, to support data quality design, policy making, and/or resource allocation decisions from an economic standpoint

All established research methods will be considered.
