Abstract deadline: April 1, 2020
The face of automation is changing. Wi th the integration of
technologies such as AI, ML, NLP, and RPA, business processes are
being automated and optimized across the enterprise, and employees
are being liberated of repetitive tasks to perform higher-level
work.
But while intelligent automation is promising from a competitive
advantage viewpoint, its implications include the possibility of
employee displacement, workforce transition challenges, security
risks, ethical and regulatory issues.
An upcoming issue of Cutter Business Technology Journal with Guest
Editor San Murugesan
http://www.cutter.com/experts/san-murugesan
will examine this new face of automation. This includes the
benefits and opportunities as well as the challenges, disruptions,
and the impact on businesses, the job landscape, and society.
We invite insights and perspectives from practitioners, academics,
consultants, visionaries and industry experts.
Article ideas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
How are smart automation, autonomous systems, and RPA being used
in domains such as business, finance, manufacturing, smart
factories, healthcare, supply chain, tourism, hospitality, and
defense? How will automation shape these domains in the future?
What new applications and innovations might emerge?
How can two or more such systems work together collaboratively?
What are some examples of typical use cases?
What are the promises and potential of cobots (collaborative
robots), and what new challenges will they pose?
What do IT leaders need to do to prepare their
businesses/employees for a transition to an advanced automation
environment?
How can an advanced automation system and a human interact and
work together successfully?
How can we implement ‘adjustable autonomy' which requires the
transfer of decision-making control to other entities (typically
an automation system transferring control to a human operator or
vice versa)?
How can automation embrace AI, ML, IoT, GPS data, cloud, robots
and smart materials?
What type of enterprise automation strategy is necessary to
accommodate new technology advances?
Trust is a critical factor in adoption of advanced automation
practices. How can we establish trustworthiness?
How might cyberattacks affect safety, reliability, and operations
of an autonomous automation system?
What are the major concerns and threats of emerging automation?
How might new kinds of automation impact a skilled workforce? What
types of retraining, reskilling will be necessary? What about job
displacement?
What types of cultural transitioning/training is needed to get
workers on board/up-to-speed?
What new opportunities will arise now, and in the near future, for
the IT industry and technology professionals?
What are moral/ethical obligations and responsibilities of
developers and adopters of advanced automation?
Do automation technologies and applications need be regulated, and
if so by whom?
