MOTIVATION AND OVERVIEW
Healthcare delivery in the 21st century faces significant challenges as demand for more and improved services continues to grow. Ageing populations, the escalating incidence of chronic disease and higher expectations of health all contribute to increasing pressure on health services. The advantages of using Information Technology to provide much needed efficiencies within the health sector have long been recognised. Although adoption and use of such technologies has often been slow and piecemeal there have been significant advances and increasing maturity in e-health applications. The coming of age of Health Information Systems brings new challenges with the need to shift the focus towards dealing with the range of issues that e-health has produced such as interoperability, standards and innovation. Diminishing resources and increasing demands across the health sector require greater diffusion of new innovations so that the potential of both new and existing applications is fully realised. The path to IT maturity requires that mission critical systems become embedded in every day work practices and new innovations are widely adopted in a sustainable and effective manner. In addition, advances in newer technologies are adding more opportunities to develop innovative ways to improve the delivery of healthcare. Research in this area has reached a new and exciting stage and the proposed special issue invites theoretical or empirical research contributions that focus on innovations in Health Information systems. Topics include but are not limited to:
- The use of emerging technologies to increase efficiencies for both health professionals and for non-clinical applications that support health services. - New models for improving communication between healthcare stakeholders - Electronic health records - Development of systems to enhance primary healthcare - Uses of IT to improve clinicians� work processes - IS to improve patient empowerment and increase self management - Challenges for change management and leadership
