Dear colleagues around the world:

It is my pleasure to present the first 2020 JITCAR issue. It is the penunltimate issue under my editorship that started with the founding of this journal in 1999. The contents of this issue are:

1. Editorial Preface article by Dr. Varun Grover, Mr. Le Kuai, Mr. Jia Wei, and Mr. Yaping Zhu ;

2. Research Case Article-1 co-authored by Drs. James Holohan and Mohammad Y Sarhan;

3. Research Case Article-2 co-authored by Dr. Nikolaus Obwegeser, Ms. Katrine Arenfeldt, Ms. Amalie Corty Dam, Mr. Kim Harder Fenger, and Mr. Johan Vang Silkjaer;

4. Expert Opinion report by Dr. Mahesh Raisinghani; and

5. Book Review by Dr. Vijay Vemuri. Summary information of these items is as follows.

In the editorial preface article titled, "The Complexity of Establishing Causality in a Digital Environment: An Eye to the Future", the authors focus on how the changes in "embeddedness" and "agency" due to digitalization are convoluting establishment of causality in studying relationships between IT and the social enterprise.

In the research case article-1 titled, "Subservient to the Upper Echelon: How Information Systems Managers Practice Strategic Alignment in the Public Higher Education Sector," the authors examined in detail two educational institutions, operating under the auspices of Ireland's Institutes of Technology (IIT), to explore how the alignment of business and information systems (IS) strategies is practiced by IS managers. They applied a methodology that integrates Strategy as Process, constructivist grounded theory coding and case research methodology. They determined that the IS manager as a functional manager is expected to reduce costs and gain operational efficiencies in other functions. He/she is generally excluded from direct role in developing IS strategy and also prevented from dealing directly with organization's principal IS services provider.

In the research case article-2 titled, "Aligning drivers, contractual governance, and relationship management of IT-outsourcing initiatives," the authors address the issue of two alignments in the context of outsourcing: drivers and goals, and contractual aspects and managerial aspects. The article develops a conceptual model of IT outsourcing alignment and then analyzes a single, in-depth case of IT outsourcing in a large Nordic company. The article concludes that there is a need to achieve a fit among drivers, goals, contractual factors, and managerial factors of IT outsourcing initiatives.
The Expert Opinion report documents interview by Dr. Mahesh Raisinghani with the Managing Partner at CLT E-Sports & Charlotte Phoenix, Mr. Clarence James (CJ) Collins. His passion in gaming as a player lodged him into the esports scene many years ago. More recently he started supporting the Army esports program which led him to create his own future in esports. The Charlotte Phoenix is a professional team that competes in a variety of e-sport titles including Rocket League, League of Legends, and Call of Duty. E-sports includes a variety of operations, similar to what you might find in an NBA or NFL format. Esports being relatively unknown to most Americans, CLT e-sports is designed to support events and teach the local population about this arena. He is fully occupied with these two businesses. Questions posed to Mr. James are: (a) What are E-sports and how would you define it to someone who has never heard of it?; (b) How important is information technology (IT) in your indus
try, and your organization?; (c) How do you make money in esports, its just kids playing video games?; (d) Please name and briefly describe some of your strategic approaches to the e-sports space; (e) Please describe the structure and organization of an esports business; (f) Can you think of 5 different business models in esports?; (g) What have been the most important technologies (e.g., mobile, Internet-based, online gaming, imaging, satellite communications, etc.) that have facilitated the expansion of your company's products and services?; (h) Why is e-sports in schools a good thing?; (i) What advice can you offer to companies exploring getting into esports?

Book review report by Dr. Vijay Vemuri provides a detailed coverage of the 2018 book titled, "THE AI ADVANTAGE: How to put the Artificial Intelligence Revolution to Work,," authored by Thomas H. Davenport <https://smile.amazon.com/Nicholas-D.-Evans/e/B001IYVE4I/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1492661110&sr=8-1> and published in 2018 by MIT Press. This book prefers the term cognitive technologies rather than AI so that there are no unreasonable expectations. The book emphasizes that cognitive technologies are primarily about gaining insights from data, information and knowledge to transform organizations.
