Forwarded message from [volker@uran.informatik.uni-bonn.de] sent originally on Tue, 22 Feb 2000 19:14:40 +0100 (MET): : CALL FOR PAPERS : : Special Issue on : : "EVOLVING USE OF GROUPWARE" : http://www.telin.nl/events/ecscw99evo/specialissue.html : : of the: : COMPUTER SUPPORTED COOPERATIVE WORK: : THE JOURNAL OF COLLABORATIVE COMPUTING : : published by Kluwer : : THEME : : More often than not, users appear to use groupware differently than the : groupware designers intended. In particular, the organisation of their work : and their working practices change over time as they 're-invent' the : technology or even develop novel uses. Groupware should be able to meet the : changing but unpredictable needs of groups - but how? And how may groups be : helped to develop adequate working patterns or novel applications with this : groupware? : Understanding the processes of evolving groupware use is a first step : toward answering these questions. Therefore a critical mass of long-term : case studies is needed to analyse the dynamics of groupware use. : Of equal importance is the development of conceptual frameworks to enable : the comparison of these case studies. In the CSCW research community : various theories are used to analyse such case studies, e.g.: Activity : Theory, Structuration Theory, Adaptive Structuration Theory, Sociotechnical : Systems Theory, Self-Organisation Theory, Situated Action Theory, : Contingency Theory. These theories have to be assessed to which extent they : are useful in understanding the evolving use of groupware and informing its : design, introduction and use. : This special issue will explore these questions in more depth by reporting : on a variety of experiences, technical, empirical and theoretical, that : illustrate and inform the issues and provide a resource to CSCW researchers : and developers grappling with the issues of the evolving use of groupware. : : TOPICS OF INTEREST include, but are not limited to: : : - Longterm studies of evolving use of groupware : - New theoretical frameworks for understanding appropriation processes : - Comparison of different theoretical approaches : - Assessment of existing theoretical approaches by means of case studies : - Implications for the design of groupware : - Implications for the introduction, maintenance and removal of groupware : : GUEST EDITORS: : : J.H.Erik Andriessen : Department of Psychology of Work and Organization : University of Technology Delft : De Vries van Heystplantsoen 2 : 2628 RZ Delft, The Netherlands : E-mail: erik.andriessen@wtm.tudelft.nl : : Elske Heeren and Marike Hettinga : Telematica Instituut : P.O.
