Paul:
I do not know how wide-spread this practice is; however, I have been asked by the editor-in-chiefs of several journals to do this. However, sometimes I have written back to them and said that there aren't five references from the that journal which are really relevant and they have accepted that argument. I guess the reason for the editors using this practice is to enahnce their citation and impact factors.
As your specific questions:
- A common practice NO
- Appropriate NO
- Ethical NO
It would be good to ask some editors to share their views.
I hope this helps.

I received the following e-mail from a Springer journal on whose editorial board I serve:
"The EICs are requesting that henceforth all articles that are accepted for publication to <journal x> should cite at least five <journal x> articles. This is common practice for all top journals."
I would appreciate input from my colleagues about this message.
Is this really a common practice?I Is it appropriate to reference the publishing journal over and over whether it is necessary to the paper or not? Is it ethical?
If you want to send only a brief answer just answer the questionnaire:
- A common practice YES NO
2.Appropriate YES NO 3. Ethical YES NO
Longer answers will, of course, be appreciated. Results will be fed back to the AISWorld list/
Thanks for your help
