Dear colleagues,
I would like to invite you to write a paper for the JASS special issue on "Living, Evolutionary and Tailorable Information Systems: Development Issues and Advanced Applications".
Theme and Scope:
"Living systems" is a core research area in the Systems Sciences and has been applied in disciplines ranging from biology to manufacturing and economics. It is only recently, however, that the living aspect has been applied to Information Systems (IS) and that dynamic concepts such as evolution and tailorability have been researched. In timely fashion, this special issue explores approaches to information systems development that promote the ongoing design of systems and/or defer the design process. It is increasingly recognised that business organisations are emergent in the face of change driven by technology, globalisation, deregulation, acquisition and merger, customer relationship management and the like. That is, business organisations are continually adapting to shifting environments never arriving at a destination, but always in the process of the journey. Consequently, the aim of information systems should be to remain sensitive to the dynamics of the organisational situations and contexts in which they work. Unfortunately, this runs counter to the predominant means and mechanisms of information systems development. The development process is generally portrayed as rational and seeks to abstract the structures, processes and practices of organisations with the underlying assumption that they are stable. This results in information systems that fail to meet ongoing expectations the consequences of which are well evidenced. In light of such evidence, this special issue of JASS will bring together original research, new theoretical foundations, techniques, state-of-the-art surveys, and mainly advanced applications in the area of living, evolutionary and tailorable information systems. Papers should be written according to the Guidelines for Contributors of JASS, details of which can be found at the following address: http://www.unipi.gr/jass/. Papers submitted to JASS should contain original materials not published in nor submitted to other journals. All the submissions for this special issue must be sent to the Guest Editors at the email addresses shown below with JASS LETS Issue in the subject line.
