Workshop Description:
=====================
Mobility is key for modern computer-based information systems: users are mobile, devices are mobile, services are mobile, workflows include mobility, business models reflect mobility, etc. Researchers have worked in this area since more than 10 years.
In Germany, the GI-section “Mobility and Mobile Information Systems – FG MMS” founded in Spring 2005 aims at bundling activities in this field. In October 2006 the first edition of this workshop took place at Dagstuhl. During this meeting participants structured the (German) research landscape on MMS topics. These efforts resulted in the MMS conference series, various research collaborations and supported the development of the MMS section as an active part of the GI.
Due to technical developments in the hardware sector (e.g., smartphones) and the network infrastructure (e.g., UMTS, LTE), many former visions have by now become reality. Nevertheless, there are many open research questions left. To build future work on a solid basis the MMS organizers’ board plans seven years after the first workshop to consolidate the mobility research landscape in 2013, again.
To derive a detailed summary of mobility research (in Germany) we aim to hold a “real” workshop that is divided into two parts: 1) brief presentations of participants’ recent work or developments and future research or developments they foresee as well as 2) a moderated broad discussion that helps to focus or identify main drivers and research questions during the next years. Therefore, the second part of the workshop is planned to be a so-called future search conference. The main outcome of this workshop will be on the one hand a map (landscape) of mobile research (in Germany) and on the other hand a roadmap describing future trends and steps in this field as a kind of research agenda for the next few years.
We invite researchers as well as practitioners of the mobile community to participate in this workshop presenting their most recent research topics in the morning session of the workshop and to actively participate during the afternoon discussion. The presentation of each participant should be no longer than ten to fifteen minutes giving the opportunity for first very brief (five minutes) discussion afterwards.
To participate in this one day workshop please register your interest before 31.01.2013 via email to Markus Bick (mbick@escpeurope.eu) of the organizers. Please indicate, whether you will participate in the workshop actively (presenting) or more or less passively. In a next step, we would like to ask those who want to present their recent research to submit their presentation before 17.02.2013 to the workshop organizers. The presentation (PDF file) should preferably be around 12 slides and address the aspects like: relevance of the topic, problem description and challenges, corresponding research methods to solve the problem, examples of first results. The presentations will be screened by the organizers to structure the workshop considering different subject areas. Additionally, some feedback will be provided. Revised final presentations are due on the 28.02.2013, please send to mbick@escpeurope.eu if they should be provided as handouts to the other participants.
