TRACK DESCRIPTION
Digital technologies are rapidly changing the way we organize and
perform work. Algorithms are increasingly augmenting or automating all
types of work; not only can they act as supervisors or co-workers to
their human counterparts (Tarafdar et al. 2023), but they also regularly
coordinate and control how work is done (Möhlmann et al. 2021; Kellogg
et al. 2020). Algorithmic decision-making and management can offer
substantial benefits for organizations, as it allows to scale business
models by coordinating huge numbers of employees and automating
managerial decision-making (Benlian et al. 2022). Yet, algorithmic work
has serious dark sides wherein workers can suffer from low well-being as
a consequence of lack of autonomy (Wiener, Cram and Benlian, 2021) and
technostress (Cram et al. 2022). In response, employees have started to
engage in what has been referred to as algoactivism; that is, individual
and collective tactics to influence, game, or ‘fight back’ against
algorithms (Kellogg et al. 2020; Jiang et al. 2021). More generally,
this calls us to question the way that current work systems are designed
and how we can make them fairer (Gal et al. 2020; Spiekermann et al. 2022).
Novel technologies, such as blockchain, virtual reality and AI, are also
fundamentally transforming how organizations allocate and coordinate
work. This has led to new forms of organizing (Puranam et al. 2014) and
has influenced individual work practices considerably. Freelancing and
crowd work allow workers to perform tasks more flexibly, leading to
globally distributed teams and entirely new work arrangements, such as
digital nomadism (Wang et al. 2022). To remain employable, let alone
thrive and prosper, workers will need to adapt their skill sets and
careers to leverage the capabilities of these new technologies. As the
new generation of digital natives reimagines the future of work,
definitions of work and employment are changing at the same time.
For this track, we encourage submissions that address the various facets
of the future of work, such as algorithmic management and new forms of
organizing, and how they play out on individual, organizational, and
societal levels. Submissions are encouraged from all theoretical and
methodological perspectives drawing from IS, management, and related
disciplines.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
Topics relevant to the track include, but are not limited to:
* Algorithmic management and control
* Algoactivism

Call for Submissions to
*i-com Special Issue on “The Future of Human-Computer Interaction”*
Issue Editor(s): Michael Herczeg + Michael Koch
Review Board: Editors and Editorial Board of i-com
https://i-com-journal.org/calls/special-issue-on-the-future-of-human-comput…
+++ Submission Deadline: 15.01.2024 +++
Human-Computer Interaction has had a short but lively history and
evolution. After the monstrous world of mainframes and text-based
terminals came a counter-movement in form of various graphics-based
personal computer types, which also turned the individual citizen into a
computer user. For many years, a focus on creative, but also ergonomic
solutions can be found. Efficient graphics workstations formed a
separate branch of this evolution, which diffused into personal computer
platforms through the media and gaming industry. The Internet,
especially its mobile variants, then led to a substantial
miniaturization of powerful and highly interactive computers, the design
of which is again characterized more by creative, but also a chaotic
proliferation of technology and functionality than by well defined
qualities. The fact that computers have not only gained a foothold in
all areas of life, but have also become game changers, was hardly
foreseeable to the extent that we are experiencing today. The one
zillion dollar question now is how the next upheavals will look in terms
of devices, operating systems and networking; R&D, marketing and
ownership; but above all in their design as more or less intelligent
interactive systems like followed by current Human-Centered AI or by
embedded systems like in the Internet of Things approaches. Perhaps we
may soon have to speak generally about “Human-Technology Communication”
than just about the more reduced term “Human-Computer Interaction”,
whatever that means to our future.
In a special issue of the i-com journal we would like to present
interesting but scientifically explainable and technologically sound
forecasts for the next decades to discuss them further in our HCI
community. We plan to revisit these views into the future in about five
years.
We are looking for experienced authors who, based on many years of
experience and developments in their field of work, can write short,
personal sketches or essays or reviews with a strong part about the
future. However, we will as well appreciate to receive contributions
from younger experts in the field, who maybe see completely new paths of
more revolutionary than evolutionary work and who perhaps also perceive
previous developments as dead ends in order to inspire new paths to
follow. The contributions may illuminate the topic from different
scientific perspectives such as computer science, psychology, media
design, sociology, education, business administration, labor and
organizational science.
Contributions in English language should be 1.500-5.000 words (if the
review part in the contribution is larger then up to 10.000 words are
possible), with a focus more on courageous “informed visions” and less
on “excessive literary work” with a horizon chosen as 10, 25 or 50 years
into the future.

Subject: [AISWorld] EJIS Special Issue Call for Papers - Embracing
Contrarian Thinking: Value-Reflexive Research for a Digital World
Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2023 13:33:38 +0200
From: Markus Zimmer <markus.zimmer(a)leuphana.de>

+++ European Journal of Information Systems Special Issue - Embracing
Contrarian Thinking: Value-Reflexive Research for a Digital World +++
Digital technologies and our world are deeply enmeshed shaping our lives
into a digital world.
These technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence, blockchain, social
media platforms) relate to values in overt and covert ways. They bolster
or challenge values that frequently remain unquestioned and hidden but
do surface when examining the intended and unintended technology effects.
For research to co-enact a better digital world, we need to reflect on
and problematize the values inscribed in technology. In this call, we
ask researchers to embrace contrarian thinking seeking alternative
viewpoints that may contradict prevailing attitudes or trends to
understand phenomena.
Specifically, we ask scholars, "Which values do we value?" and encourage
them to collectively engage in reflection and action on how values
underpin, inform, and perform the digital world in which we live. We
seek studies that exemplify how we as a community can engage with the
values in digital technologies, their design, development, and use.
Some of the key topics we are interested in include (but are not limited
to):
• Value-reflexive research into digital transformation, artificial
intelligence, privacy, cybersecurity, digital infrastructures,
blockchain, social media and other digital technologies
• Value-driven digital transformation of society, organisations and the
individual
• Values in digital innovation, business model design, business process
design, data analytics, digital entrepreneurship, etc.
• Values in designing, implementing and adopting digital technologies
and policies for enacting cybersecurity, privacy, and data protection, etc.
• Value positions in the design and development of digital technology
• Values in the governance of digital technology (e.g., artificial
intelligence, blockchain, digital infrastructures)
• The role of values in user experience design and human computer
interaction (e.g., nudging, persuasive design, universal design,
value-sensitive design)
• Societal, economical, institutional value structures and digital
ecosystems, platforms, or infrastructures
• Competing values in digital technologies at the societal,
organisational or individual level
• Contrarian thinking on digital disparities, e.g., digital divide,
digital dignity and digital equality or in-equality
• Value-washing (e.g., green-washing) in corporate digital
responsibility, privacy, cybersecurity, business models, digital
innovation and digital entrepreneurship
• Manifestation of values in digital technology
• Materialisation of values in digital technology
• Theorising around values in digital phenomena
• The socio-technical nature of values
The initial paper submission deadline is on February 2, 2024.
You can find the call for papers including timeline and list of AEs
here: https://www.callforpapers.co.uk/ejis-contrarian-thinking
