CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on “AI-Driven Decision Sciences”
Submission Deadline: August 30, 2023
Special Issue Editors
Meng Li (mli(a)bauer.uh.edu), University of Houston
Chao Liang (chaoliang(a)ceibs.edu), China Europe International Business School
Paul A. Pavlou (pavlou(a)central.uh.edu), University of Houston
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming the new operational foundation
of business that has transformed the very nature of how companies
operate and how they compete (Iansiti and Lakhani, 2020). AI isbelieved
to facilitate smart services and automate tasks traditionally performed
by humans. As AI enables companies to reach unprecedented levels of
scale, scope, and learning speed, organizations around the world are
eager to participate in this AI transformation. However, the rise of AI
is posing new challenges for business decision-making to understand how
it works, when it is the most powerful, and how to optimize their AI
strategies.
AI has created new business opportunities and facilitated business
decision-making in numerous ways. For example, a chatbot is an AI
application that can automate basic, repeatable, standardized
interactions between customers and sellers. For instance, chatbots such
as Amazon’s Alexa and IKEA’s Anna use voice or texts to automate
communications and create personalized customer experiences. The market
size of chatbots expanded from $250 million in 2017 to an estimated
$1.34 billion by 2024 (Pise, 2018), and the adoption of a chatbot is
estimated to save businesses $11 billion in annual costs by 2023
(Hampshire, 2018). AI has also greatly impacted the procurement process
in business-to-business markets with automation and AI-assisted sourcing
decision making, which is referred to as cognitive procurement (Loo and
Santhiram, 2018). Surveys reveal that AI has been adopted to automate
the request-for-quotation process in 60% of companies and to recommend
new suppliers in 50% of companies (Tata Consultancy Services, 2016).
Regardless of the numerous opportunities that AI offers, there are many
challenges for AI that presents enormous risks for business
decision-making. From an individual perspective, the accuracy of AI
algorithms is highly dependent on the training and analysis of mass user
data, and it needs to acquire a large amount of user personal
information to provide personalized and customized services, thus
increasing the risk of personal/individual information leakage. From the
firm’s perspective, the AI-driven business decision-making surroundings
will become more complex, which raises the mistakes and variability for
managers in the realm of practical management decision-making process,
thus generating a certain impact on the healthy and stable development
of enterprises. Moreover, how to measure the value of and then justify
the AI adoption from the very beginning is also of great interest to
companies.
> From a societal perspective, AI could potentially widen the gap amongst emerging and developed markets. The issue of potential job losses due to AI technologies has also received widespread attention. Therefore, considering the ubiquitous use of AI in digital business today, the significant beneficial or detrimental consequences of AI to operations decision-making remain to be examined and are worthy of further research attention.
In the academic literature, AI has attracted some initial attention in
business decision making with respect to its possible applications in
the field of operations management (e.g., Chen et al., 2022), business
analytics (e.g., Cui et al., 2022), marketing (e.g., Simester et al.,
2020), risk management (e.g., Araz et al. 2020), and financial
management (e.g., Wu et al., 2022; Chod et al., 2020). However, relative
to the potential in business practice, there is a relative dearth of
academic research on AI, particularly in decision sciences. We thus
organize this special issue of Decision Sciences Journal and encourage
authors to address this important but so far understudied topic in the
decision sciences – AI-Driven Decision Sciences. The main objective of
this special issue is to create a platform to address the “AI-driven
decision sciences” in digital networked business, including social
networks, electronic commerce, digital platforms, procurement
management, and intelligent manufacturing. Submissions adopting
multi-methodologies from individual, organizational, and/or societal
perspective, including analytical, empirical, simulation, and behavioral
approaches, are strongly encouraged. Possible contributions may include,
but are not limited to, the following topics:
1. Multi-method research on decision quality, decision efficiency and
decision precision driven by AI.
2. Marketing and operations decision-making interaction driven by AI.
3. Business operations model innovation driven by AI.
4. Business intelligence and digital transformation driven by AI.
5. Demand forecasting and customized services driven by AI.
6. Global sourcing management and risk control driven by AI.
7. Operations decision-making of public health driven by AI.
8. New challenges in human resource management caused by AI.
9. Intelligent manufacturing aided by AI.
10. Coordination between human-workers and AI-assisted-robot-workers.
11. AI application in Industrial Internet.
12. Logistics management with AI.
13. Optimization of warehouse operations aided by AI.
14. Ethics and social supervision of business decision-making driven by AI.
15. The potential harm engendered by the widespread use of AI in
business decision-making.
16. The measurement and balance between the benefits and the costs of
using AI in business decision-making.
17. Approaches to regulating and controlling dark side behaviors and
practices associated with AI usage in business decision-making.
18. Studies on opportunities and challenges of AI in other business
decision-making settings.
The special issue co-editors welcome authors to contact them directly to
discuss other possible topics for their suitability to the special
issue. However, all submissions must fit the Journal’s goal statements.
All submissions will go through the same rigorous review process as
regular submissions to the Journal. The journal has very specific
expectations regarding submissions: “as of January 1, 2020, we ask all
researchers who prepare manuscripts (via our Manuscript Preparation
Guide and our first step in our submission page) to visit with industry,
practitioners, retailers, users, consumers, government executives, and
other constituents and acquire first-hand knowledge of the respective
problems/challenges, conditions, assumptions, performance measures, etc.
This can be a very insightful exercise as it can help motivate the
specific topic and it can render more credibility to the authors’ work.
Who did you talk to that served as motivation for this inquiry? What
insight did you attain from those discussions as it pertains to the
realm of your study? Manuscripts that are not motivated via direct
interactions with relevant constituents are typically “Desk Rejected”
based on our policy. Note that we are not asking for a full empirical
inquiry here just to motivate the topic or attain model assumptions etc.
We are looking for enough information that demonstrates that the inquiry
is driven by real challenges that keep the relevant constituents at a
quandary. The research would be more convincing, and thus more suitable
for our journal, if this inquiry benefited from direct interactions that
served as motivation as well as a source for insights and assumptions.”
Authors are expected to document their direct interactions at such
places as the introduction to drive motivation, the
assumptions/parameters used for analytical purposes, and the discussion
section for any insights.
Manuscript Preparation and Submission
To prepare manuscripts, authors are asked to closely follow the
Author Guidelines
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/page/journal/15405915/homepage/forauthors.h…
and
Manuscript Preparation Guide
https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/societyimages/dsj/Decision%20Sciences%20Jo…
%20Preparation%20Guide_April%2022%202020.docx

Design Science Methodology for Business Informatics - Roel Wieringa
Business informatics studies and designs information technology in
organizations. The mixed sociotechnical nature of its topic imposes
constraints on its research methodology. Technical systems cannot be
studied and designed in the same way as social systems. And the
integration of technical and social systems poses special problems of
its own. In this talk I review the generic methodology of design
science, illustrate how these are applied in the CBI conference, and
discuss how business informatics can develop explanatory and
generalizable theories.
Business Information Systems in the Quantum Era - Ricardo Pérez-Castillo
Quantum computing is destined to revolutionise how society will solve
computationally challenging problems, i.e., those problems that cannot
be addressed in a reasonable time frame. Quantum computing is,
therefore, gaining increasing relevance due to its promising
applications in many business domains. To such extent, that many experts
consider this as the latest shiny new thing. At this point, most IT
managers therefore wonder if quantum computing should be integrated in
their information systems and, a more important question, how to do it.
To succeed in this integration, quantum software is also required.
Accordingly, quantum software engineering has become crucial, in that it
attempts to apply or adapt existing methods and techniques (or propose
new ones) for the analysis, design, coding, and testing of quantum
information systems as well as playing a key role in ensuring quality in
large-scale productions. In this talk, Ricardo will introduce landscapes
and horizons on quantum computing and guide us through the area of
quantum software engineering to design and build classical-quantum
information systems.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-56), Maui,
Hawaii, January 3-6, 2023
http://www.hicss.org/
Minitrack: Value, Success, And Performance Measurements Of Knowledge,
Innovation, And Entrepreneurial Systems
Track: Knowledge, Innovation, and Entrepreneurial Systems Track
Research into knowledge systems, knowledge management (KM), organizational
memories, and organizational learning has been affected by investigations
such as implementation aspects, system developments, or knowledge flows
during a number of years. Therefore, a high maturity level of KM research
has been achieved. However, organizational knowledge/KM initiatives are
more and more faced with budget cuts and justification demands due to
intense competition in today’s business environments. The influences of the
rapid pace of globalization and of the ongoing liberalization of national
and international markets lead to the emergence of increased pressure on
existing companies. Project managers of knowledge/KM initiatives like Chief
Knowledge Officers need to justify their budgets and, thus, are in need of
qualitative and quantitative evidence of the initiatives’ success. In
addition, ROI calculations and traditional accounting approaches do not
tell an adequate story when proposing knowledge-based initiatives.
This minitrack explores research into strategies, methodologies, and
stories that relate to measuring this success. In addition, this minitrack
will be used to explore the bodies of performance measurements that define
the current state of research in measuring knowledge system, KM,
organizational memory, and organizational learning success. Eventually,
another purpose of this minitrack is to present research on how to value
knowledge-based initiatives. Possible topics include:
· Frameworks and models for assessing knowledge systems, knowledge
management, and/or organizational memory systems
· Methodologies and processes for measuring knowledge systems,
knowledge management and/or organizational memory success and performance
· Impact of knowledge use, knowledge management strategy,
organization, systems, culture, and other issues on knowledge

Our minitrack is part of "Internet and the Digital Economy" track
Digital transformation has become a topic of central concern in the
digital economy, characterized by enhanced connectivity and an explosion
of available data changing the way enterprises do business. It goes
beyond simple technology adoption, requiring new methods, models, and
tools enabling data-driven business. These changes frequently imply new
strategies, identities, new business models, and adapted capabilities to
deal with people, technology, and processes that advocates new ways of
management and change management.
This minitrack aims to discuss how organizations, individuals and
technology influence each other during digital transformation. Also, to
investigate how organizations are dealing with the complexity generated
by digital transformation at different levels simultaneously. These may
include papers presenting a real case or cases in any activity sector,
for example, papers on - strategies or tools helping organisations to
deal with their digital transformation; practices involved in digital
transformation; challenges during the transformation process; metrics
and indicators adopted to measure the success or degree of digital
transformation; or other relevant topics in the area.
Proposed topics include, but are not limited to:
* DT challenges, drivers, adoption, and barriers
* DT human resources / technology / corporate strategies
* DT key performance indicators / success factors / maturity
* Comparisons between industries and countries
* Impact on work and changing roles e.g. Data Scientists, Data Citizens,
Chief Digital Officers, etc.
* Impact of dynamic capabilities, disruption, competitive advantage
Research questions, some examples include (but are not limited to):
* How to develop the workforce for digital transformation?
* How to measure the degree of DT?
* What are strategies to better cope with challenges of DT?
* How does DT affect corporate strategy and vice versa?
* How does analytical competence and capability influence DT?
* How to adapt change management to better support successful DT?
* How does data-driven business and DT influences business models?
* How are existing business facing DT of the supply chain and partners?
* How digital supply chain compels organizations to embark in the
digital transformation journey?
We expect contributions that will address relevant research questions to
the DT process and business model changes. Exchanges and interactions
among authors during the conference will promote fruitful discussions,
perhaps new collaborations. As DT draws heavily from related research
domains and seems to be under-theorized in itself, this minitrack will
contribute to some theoretical evolution of this relevant research topic.

Systems<https://sigmis.org/the-data-base/>.
Scope
Digital and social media (DSM) have transformed the workplace in
organizations. Since spring 2020, the global outbreak of the coronavirus
(COVID-19) pandemic has increased enterprise social media (ESM) use at
home offices when companies sent employees to work from home. The
increasing use of ESM in home office environments has called for further
research on the effects of ESM use on employee well-being, work-life
balance, social media fatigue, and work performance during and post the
COVID-19 pandemic.
This minitrack focuses on organizations’ internal and external use of
digital and social media to facilitate work processes (e.g.,
communication, collaboration, and socialization) inclusive of both
business (for-profit) and non-profit organizations and to engage various
organizational stakeholders. Hence, research of this minitrack lies at
the intersection of multiple disciplines, namely Science & Technology,
Organization Science, Marketing, and Behavioral Science.
Topics
This minitrack welcomes theoretical and empirical studies addressing
organizational, managerial, technical, and behavioral perspectives on
digital and social media by enterprises and their employees. Potential
issues and topics include, but are not limited to:
-Digital and social media affordances
-Dark side of enterprise social media
-Digital and social media marketing
-Diversity, equity, and inclusion on enterprise social media platforms
-Digital and social media use & employee work-life balance
-Digital and social media use & Information privacy and security
-Digital and social media use & social capital
-Enterprise social media use and employee well-being during the COVID-19
pandemic
-Effects (both positive and negative) of digital and social media at
workplace
-Methodologies for studying digital and social media in enterprise
-Organizational strategies and practices associated with digital and
social media use
-New theories to describe and explain the phenomenon of enterprise
social media use
-Roles and responsibilities of IS departments in the use of and support
for digital and social media
-The use of social media for organizational fundraising or donations
-The use of social media for public perception management
