Subject: [AISWorld] MIS Quarterly Call for Papers: Next-Generation
Information Systems Theories

MIS Quarterly Call for Papers: Next-Generation Information Systems Theories
Editors: Andrew Burton Jones (University of Queensland;
abj(a)business.uq.edu.au); Brian Butler (University of Maryland;
bsbutler(a)umd.edu); Susan Scott (London School of Economics;
S.V.Scott(a)lse.ac.uk); and Sean Xin Xu (Tsinghua University;
xuxin(a)sem.tsinghua.edu.cn)
Submission Deadline: Extended Abstracts due November 15, 2018; Full
Paper submissions due April 1, 2019
Focus and Motivation of the Special Issue: As a research field evolves,
it is important to periodically take stock and reflect on how its core
theoretical ideas are developing and be open to radical innovation. Do
existing theoretical ideas need significant revision? Should well-known
ideas be dropped? Are new ideas required? Have important ideas been
forgotten? Are opportunities for new ideas not being taken because of
academic silos or a failure to adopt innovative models of enquiry? This
special issue provides an opportunity to take stock and reflect on
theoretical progress in Information Systems and forge exciting new
theoretical avenues for the future.
Now is a particularly opportune time for the Information Systems field
to take stock of its theoretical progress and develop next-generation IS
theories. We are witnissing fundamental changes in the field’s core
phenomena as well as major changes in ur data, methods, and categories
of knowledge. This Special Issue offers an opportunity to energize the
best theoretical minds in the field to see if we can lay the foundations
for a new generation of research.
This will be the second MIS Quarterly special issue devoted to theory
papers. (In March 1999, MIS Quarterly issued a Call for Submissions for
a Special Issue on Redefining the Organizational Roles of Information
Technology in the Information Age. The issue was motivated by
transformations occurring throughout the 1990s. The papers for that
Special Issue appeared in the September 2002 (Volume 26, Number 3) and
June 2003 (Volume 27, Number 2) issues.) As a result, this special
issue represents an opportunity for MISQ to publish not only the best
theoretical work, but also the best of the theory paper genre.
While not wishing to limit the structure of papers submitted to the
special issue, we suggest three examples that might work for many authors:
1. Pure theory papers: Papers that provide a detailed review of
theory in a focal domain but where the new theoretical contribution
departs from the prior literature and the focus is on the new theory
being generated.
2. Review-oriented theory papers: Papers that provide a very
detailed review of theory in a focal domain and where the new
theoretical contribution stems from the authors’ synthesis of that
review (e.g., through its critique or reformulation).
3. Empirically enhanced theory papers: Papers that focus on the
generation of new theory but where data plays an important
developmental, illustrative or justificatory role.
To view the full call for papers, including information on the Special
Issue Editorial Board, the process and time lines for submissions, and
key dates, go to the MIS Quarterly’s home page at https://misq.org

Short description is presented below
If you are interested, please, register at
https://caise2018.ut.ee/registration/ indicating STPIS'18 as your choice
for 12th of June
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Despite that a socio-technical perspective has been around for over a
half century, it is often forgotten in the Information Systems (IS)
discourse today. Consequently, many “new approaches” appear to reflect
on IS systems problems, such as modern IT systems poorly adjusted to the
external or/and internal environment (e.g. market, organizational
culture) of organizations in which they are (to be) deployed. We
strongly believe that it is high time the social-technical perspective
took its proper place in IS research, practice and teaching.
The main purpose of the workshop is to arrange discussions on using a
socio-technical perspective in IS development, the long term goal being
to make this workshop a meeting place for the community of IS
researchers and practitioners interested in the socio-technical approach.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Case studies using socio-technical approach
* Information system design using socio-technical approach
* Socio-technical comparative studies of technology/IS adoption
* Socio-technical analysis, design, development and integration of
– health care systems
– crisis management systems
– information security management systems
– learning systems
– privacy enhanced technology
* Societal Security from a socio-technical perspective
* Ethnographic and Anthropological aspects of IS design and adoption
* IT business alignment from a socio-technical perspective
* Using Viable System Model (VSM) for analysis and design of
socio-technical systems

-- FCA4AI (Sixth Edition) --
``What can FCA do for Artificial
Intelligence?''
co-located with IJCAI 2018, Stockholm, Sweden
July 13 2018
http://www.fca4ai.hse.ru/2018
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General Information.
The five preceding editions of the FCA4AI Workshop (ECAI 2016, 2014 and
2012, IJCAI 2015 and 2013) showed that many researchers working in
Artificial Intelligence are indeed interested in a powerful method for
classification and mining such as Formal Concept Analysis (see CEUR
Proceedings Vol-1703, Vol-1430, Vol-1257, Vol-1058, and Vol-939).
This year, we have the chance to organize a new edition of the workshop
in Stockholm co-located with the IJCAI 2018 Conference.
Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) is a mathematically well-founded theory
aimed at data analysis and classification. FCA allows one to build a
concept lattice and a system of dependencies (implications) which can be
used for many AI needs, e.g. knowledge processing, knowledge discovery,
knowledge representation and reasoning, ontology engineering, as well as
information retrieval, recommendation, social network analysis and text
processing. Thus, there exist many ``natural links'' between FCA and AI.
Recent years have been witnessing increased scientific activity around
FCA, in particular a strand of work emerged that is aimed at extending
the possibilities of FCA w.r.t. knowledge processing, such as work on
pattern structures and relational concept analysis. These extensions are
aimed at allowing FCA to deal with more complex than just binary data,
for solving problems in data analysis, knowledge discovery, knowledge
representation, ontology engineering, and many more.
All these works extend the capabilities of FCA and offer new
possibilities for AI activities in the framework of FCA.
Accordingly, in this workshop, we will be interested in the following
main issues:
- How can FCA support AI activities such as knowledge processing
(knowledge discovery, knowledge representation and reasoning),
learning (clustering, pattern and data mining), natural language
processing, or information retrieval?
- How can FCA be extended in order to help AI researchers to solve new
and complex problems in their domain?
The workshop is dedicated to discussing such issues.
TOPICS OF INTEREST include but are not limited to:
- Concept lattices and related structures: description logics, pattern
structures, relational structures.
- Knowledge discovery and data mining with FCA: association rules,
itemsets and data dependencies, attribute implications, data
pre-processing, redundancy and dimensionality reduction, classification
and clustering.
- Knowledge engineering and ontology engineering: knowledge
representation and reasoning.
- Scalable algorithms for concept lattices and artificial intelligence
``in the large'' (distributed aspects, big data).
- Applications of concept lattices: semantic web, information retrieval,
visualization and navigation, pattern recognition, and practical
applications in agronomy, biology, chemistry, finance, manufacturing,
medicine, etc.
The workshop will include time for audience discussion toward developing
a better understanding of the issues, challenges, and ideas being presented.

11th Workshop on Resiliency in High Performance Computing (Resilience)
in Clusters, Clouds, and Grids
<https://www.csm.ornl.gov/srt/conferences/Resilience/2018>
in conjunction with
the 24th International European Conference on Parallel and Distributed
Computing (Euro-Par), Turin, Italy
August 27 - 31, 2018
<https://europar2018.org>
Overview:
Resilience is a critical challenge as high performance computing (HPC)
systems continue to increase component counts, individual component
reliability decreases (such as due to shrinking process technology and
near-threshold voltage (NTV) operation), and software complexity increases.
Application correctness and execution efficiency, in spite of frequent
faults, errors, and failures, is essential to ensure the success of the
extreme-scale HPC systems, cluster computing environments, Grid computing
infrastructures, and Cloud computing services.
While a fault (e.g., a bug or stuck bit) is the cause of an error, its
manifestation as a state change is considered an error (e.g., a bad value
or incorrect execution), and the transition to an incorrect service is
observed as a failure (e.g., an application abort or system crash). A
failure in a computing system is typically observed through an application
abort or a full/partial service or system outage. A detectable correctable
error is often transparently handled by hardware, such as a single bit flip
in memory that is protected with single-error correction double-error
detection (SECDED) error correcting code (ECC). A detectable uncorrectable
error (DUE) typically results in a failure, such as multiple bit flips in
the same addressable word that escape SECDED ECC correction, but not
detection, and ultimately cause an application abort. An undetectable error
(UE) may result in silent data corruption (SDC), e.g., an incorrect
application output. There are many other types of hardware and software
faults, errors, and failures in computing systems.
Resilience for HPC systems encompasses a wide spectrum of fundamental and
applied research and development, including theoretical foundations, fault
detection and prediction, monitoring and control, end-to-end data integrity,
enabling infrastructure, and resilient solvers and algorithm-based fault
tolerance. This workshop brings together experts in the community to further
research and development in HPC resilience and to facilitate exchanges
across the computational paradigms of extreme-scale HPC, cluster computing,
Grid computing, and Cloud computing.
Submission Guidelines:
Authors are invited to submit papers electronically in English in PDF
format. Submitted manuscripts should be structured as technical papers and
BETWEEN 10 AND 12 PAGES, including figures, tables and references, using
Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) format at
<http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0>. Papers with
less than 10 or more than 12 pages will not be accepted due to publisher
guidelines. Submissions should include abstract, key words and the e-mail
address of the corresponding author. Papers not conforming to these
guidelines may be returned without review. All manuscripts will be reviewed
and will be judged on correctness, originality, technical strength,
significance, quality of presentation, and interest and relevance to the
conference attendees. Submitted papers must represent original unpublished
research that is not currently under review for any other conference or
journal. Papers not following these guidelines will be rejected without
review and further action may be taken, including (but not limited to)
notifications sent to the heads of the institutions of the authors and
sponsors of the conference. Submissions received after the due date or not
appropriately structured may also not be considered. The proceedings
will be published in Springer's LNCS as post-conference proceedings. At
least one author of an accepted paper must register for and attend the
workshop for inclusion in the proceedings. Authors may contact the workshop
program chairs for more information.

Special issue call for papers from Information Discovery and Delivery
Open Educational Resource, or OER in short, has been referred to as
educational sources or services that anyone may have equal access and
contribution (Tuomi, 2006; UNESCO, 2002). Its benefit of reducing
students’ cost of education has been validated and underscored in
numerous reports. A recent review of 16 OER studies in higher education
showed that overall students using OER had the same level of achievement
as those using traditional textbook, if not better (Hilton, 2016).
Faculty and students reported favorable perceptions toward OER. As a
young and growing field, OER has shown its promise in providing
accessible and affordable educational opportunities for learners.
However, Hilton (2016) found out in his search effort that first there
were not many OER studies, and second, there was a lack of studies with
rigorous research design. At the same time, as Drs. Wiley, Bliss, and
McEwen (2014) pointed out, it faces several major challenges, among
which the following questions are significant. What constitutes a
quality OER source or service? How is the quality measured? How to find
quality OER to effectively support specific needs? What are effective
ways to find, localize, and manage OER for a specific linguistic and
cultural context?
We invite authors to submit paper on OER discovery, localization,
management, and quality from theoretical, technical, and design
perspectives.
Topics may include, but not limited to:
* Finding, Seeking and Sharing OER
* OER Delivery and Management
* OER and digital library
* Users’ behavior in OER such as information seeking behavior
* Learning analytics and data mining of OER
* Recommendation systems for OER
* OER accessibility
* Effective use of OER
* OER design and evaluation
* OER quality
* OER localization or adaptation in and across courses
* Open assessment
* Global impact
* Systematic review of OER research
* Advances in OER
* Case studies related to OER discovery and delivery

Machine Learning, Robotic and Toy Computing
Minitrack
URL: http://hicss.hawaii.edu
Machine learning employs software tools from advanced analytics
disciplines such as data mining, predictive analytics, and text based on
a set of algorithms that attempt to model high-level abstractions in
data by using multiple processing layers with complex structures or
non-linear transformations. At the same time, the processing and
analysis of machine learning applications present methodological and
technological challenges. Further machine learning applications are
advantaged by a rise in sensing technologies as witnessed in both the
number of sensors and the rich diversity of sensors ranging from cell
phones, personal computers, and health tracking appliances to Artificial
Intelligence (AI) technologies designed to give contextual, semantic
data to entities in an ubiquitous environment that previously could not
contribute intelligence to key decisions and smart devices. Recently AI
technologies have been applied to robotic and toy computing. Robotic
computing is one branch of AI technologies, and their synergistic
interactions, that enable and are enabled by robots. Robots now can
easily capture a user's physical activity state (e.g., walking,
standing, running, etc.) and store personalized information (e.g., face,
voice, location, activity pattern, etc.) through the camera, microphone,
and sensors by AI technologies. Toy computing is a recently developing
concept which transcends the traditional toy into a new area of computer
research using AI technologies. A toy in this context can be effectively
considered a computing device or peripheral called Smart Toys. We invite
research and industry papers related to these specific challenges and
others that are driving innovation in machine learning, robotic and toy
computing. With a general focus on machine learning, robotic and toy
computing, this mini-track covers related topics in machine learning,
robotic and toy computing such as:
* Data Modeling and Implementation
* Analytics and Algorithms
* Business Models
* Delivery, Deployment, and Maintenance
* Real-time Processing Technologies and Online Transactions
* Conceptual and Technical Architecture
* Visualization Technologies
* Modeling and Implementation
* Security, Privacy, and Trust
* Industry Standards and Solution Stacks
* Provenance Tracking Frameworks and Tools
* Software Repositories
* Organizations Best Practices
* Case Studies (e.g., smart toys, healthcare, financial, aviation, etc.)
Extended versions of accepted papers will be invited for submission by
specific journal special issue in Electronic Commerce Research and
Applications by Elsevier
