With the advent of Web 2.0 social media technologies have been
spreading. They add to the existing forms of transactional information
systems by focusing on user generated content and the interaction with
users. Beside technical aspects and requirements (e.g. Web 2.0
techniques, semantic interoperability, data analysis and fusion, social
analytics), the integration of different parties, such as internal as
well as external stakeholders, has become an important challenge for
these social information systems. They may be defined as information
systems that are “based on social technologies and open collaboration.”
From this definition, four characteristics of social information
systems may be derived: weak ties, social production, egalitarianism and
mutual service provisioning. Weak-ties are spontaneously established
contacts between individuals that create new views and allow combining
competencies. Social Production is the creation of artifacts, by
combining the input from independent contributors without predetermining
the way to do this. Egalitarianism is the attitude of handling
individuals equally. Social information systems overcome the separation
of the service provider and consumer by introducing the idea, that
service provisioning is a mutual process of service exchange and thus
co-creation of value.
In this minitrack we seek papers that explore how social information
systems are designed, implemented, operated and integrated. Possible
topics are:
- New methods for developing and understanding social information
systems
- Impact of weak ties, social production, egalitarianism and mutual
service provisioning
- Businesses processes enabled by social information systems
- Link of social business processes and other business processes
- Modeling of social processes for social information systems
- New technologies and architectures for social information systems
- Data creation and analytics within social information systems
For further conference details, schedules and submission guidelines,
please see: http://www.hicss.org/http://www.hicss.org/. Selected paper
of the minitrack will be fast-tracked to a special issue of Electronic
Markets - The International Journal on Networked Business

'Research-in-progress' or 'Lessons learned from practice' (up to 8 pages)
Abstract submission (recommended): March 31st, 2017
The Call for Papers can be downloaded from http://www.bpmds.org
*************************************************************************
IMPORTANT DATES:
---------------
Short paper abstracts (recommended): March 31st, 2017
Submission deadline: April 10th, 2017
Notification of acceptance: April 30th, 2017
Camera-ready papers due: May 10th, 2017
ABOUT THE BPMDS CONFERENCE:
--------------------------
The topics addressed by the BPMDS series are focused on business
processes and their IT support. This is one of the keystones of
information systems theory beyond short-lived fashions. The continued
interest in this topic on behalf of the IS community is reflected by the
success of the past BPMDS events, and their promotion from a workshop to
a working conference.
The BPMDS series has produced seventeen events from 1998 to 2016. From
2011, BPMDS has become a two-day working conference attached to CAiSE
(Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering). The basic
principles of the BPMDS series are:
1. BPMDS serves as a meeting place for researchers and practitioners in
the areas of business development, and business applications (software)
development
2. The aim of the event is mainly discussions, rather than presentations.
3. Each event has a theme that is mandatory for idea papers.
4. Each event's results are, usually, published in a special issue of an
international journal.
The goals, format, and history of BPMDS can be found on the web site:
http://www.bpmds.org/history
BACKGROUND AND AIMS:
-------------------
BPMDS solicits papers related to Business Process Modeling, Development
and Support (BPMDS) using quality, relevance, originality and
applicability as main selection criteria.
For the 18th edition of the BPMDS conference, we invite the interested
authors to engage during the two days of BPMDS’2017 in Essen, and to
take part in a deep discussion with all participants about the
challenges of business transformation in the digitally connected world
and the ways business process modeling, development and support may
provide capabilities to deal with those challenges. The challenges
result, among others, from the impacts of the ubiquity of the actors,
social networks, new business models, the co-existence of flexibility,
exception handling, context awareness and personalization requirements
together with other compliance and quality requirements.
Practitioners are producing business process models, researchers are
studying/producing business process models, and also are producing new
modeling languages when they consider that existing ones are not
sufficient. What is beyond? Which kind of analyses can we make using
those process models? How can we complete / enhance those process models
with annotations, with data coming from everywhere out of the immediate
process environment? How can the understanding we gain by working on
those models in a sandbox help / facilitate the undergoing business
transformation?
TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION:
----------------------
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
Business transformation and BPMDS
- How does BPMDS enable and contribute to analyzing / understanding /
representing business transformation?
- How does business transformation influence BPMDS?
- How do projects of business process modeling, development and support
contribute to increasing innovative capacities for business transformation?
- What are the relationships between various types of BPS systems (SoS
vs. WFMS, for instance) and types of transformation they help to support?
- How do transformative technologies such as IoT, cloud-computing, Big
Data, etc., impact BPMDS, particularly do they change the notion of
business process?
- How does the rise of platforms and bidirectional markets influence BPMDS?
- What are cases where business process related projects supported /
facilitated business transformation?
- What are cases where business process related projects did not support
/ facilitate business transformation?
- How can BPMDS contribute to integrating people for business
transformation, e. g., via human-centric business processes?
- Business process ecosystems in a connected and elastic world
- Pervasive business processes and ubiquitous actors supporting business
transformation
- The roles of BPMDS in business analytics and in exploiting the data
abundance (“Big Data”)
- New capabilities of analysis of business process models to support
business transformation

- Title: Memory-Efficient NBNN Image Classification
- Authors: YoonSeok Lee and Sung-Eui Yoon
- Keyword: Image classification; NBNN; Hashing; Memory efficiency; Indexing
- Abstract
Naive Bayes nearest neighbor (NBNN) is a simple image classifier based on
identifying nearest neighbors. NBNN uses original image descriptors (e.g.,
SIFTs) without vector quantization for preserving the discriminative power
of descriptors and has a powerful generalization characteristic. However, it
has a distinct disadvantage. Its memory requirement can be prohibitively
high while processing a large amount of data. To deal with this problem, we
apply a spherical hashing binary code embedding technique, to compactly
encode data without significantly losing classification accuracy. We also
propose using an inverted index to identify nearest neighbors among
binarized image descriptors. To demonstrate the benefits of our method, we
apply our method to two existing NBNN techniques with an image dataset. By
using 64 bit length, we are able to reduce memory 16 times with higher
runtime performance and no significant loss of classification accuracy. This
result is achieved by our compact encoding scheme for image descriptors
without losing much information from original image descriptors.

[Paper Two]
- Title: NuDE 2.0: A Formal Method-based Software Development, Verification
and Safety Analysis Environment for Digital I&Cs in NPPs
- Authors: Eui-Sub Kim, Dong-Ah Lee, Sejin Jung, Junbeom Yoo, Jong-Gyun Choi
and Jang-Soo Lee
- Keyword: MBD; Formal methods; Safety analysis; PLC; FPGA; Digital I&C
- Abstract
NuDE 2.0 (Nuclear Development Environment 2.0) is a formal-method-based
software development, verification and safety analysis environment for
safety-critical digital I&Cs implemented with programmable logic controller
(PLC) and field-programmable gate array (FPGA). It simultaneously develops
PLC/FPGA software implementations from one requirement/design specification
and also helps most of the development, verification, and safety analysis to
be performed mechanically and in sequence. The NuDE 2.0 now consists of 25
CASE tools and also includes an in-depth solution for indirect commercial
off-the-shelf (COTS) software dedication of new FPGA-based digital I&Cs. We
expect that the NuDE 2.0 will be widely used as a means of diversifying
software design/implementation and model-based software development
methodology.

[Paper Three]
- Title: A Comparative Study of Local Features in Face-based Video Retrieval
- Authors: Juan Zhou and Lan Huang
- Keyword: Video retrieval; Face matching; Harris operators; SIFT; SURF;
Eigenfaces
- Abstract
Face-based video retrieval has become an active and important branch of
intelligent video analysis. Face profiling and matching is a fundamental
step and is crucial to the effectiveness of video retrieval. Although many
algorithms have been developed for processing static face images, their
effectiveness in face-based video retrieval is still unknown, simply because
videos have different resolutions, faces vary in scale, and different
lighting conditions and angles are used. In this paper, we combined
content-based and semantic-based image analysis techniques, and
systematically evaluated four mainstream local features to represent face
images in the video retrieval task: Harris operators, SIFT and SURF
descriptors, and eigenfaces. Results of ten independent runs of 10-fold
cross-validation on datasets consisting of TED (Technology Entertainment
Design) talk videos showed the effectiveness of our approach, where the SIFT
descriptors achieved an average F-score of 0.725 in video retrieval and thus
were the most effective, while the SURF descriptors were computed in 0.3
seconds per image on average and were the most efficient in most cases.

[Paper Four]
- Title: Word Sense Disambiguation Using Embedded Word Space
- Authors: Myung Yun Kang, Bogyum Kim and Jae Sung Lee
- Keyword: Word sense disambiguation; Word embedding; Word space; Semantic
analysis
- Abstract
Determining the correct word sense among ambiguous senses is essential for
semantic analysis. One of the models for word sense disambiguation is the
word space model which is very simple in the structure and effective.
However, when the context word vectors in the word space model are merged
into sense vectors in a sense inventory, they become typically very large
but still suffer from the lexical scarcity. In this paper, we propose a word
sense disambiguation method using word embedding that makes the sense
inventory vectors compact and efficient due to its additive
compositionality. Results of experiments with a Korean sense-tagged corpus
show that our method is very effective.

Abstract
JITTA continues to prove as an outlet to stimulate discourse on topical themes and timely contributions to information systems research. Special sections for big data analytics, business process management, human-centered IS, and neuroIS serve as standing call for papers on important contemporary research areas. The global profile of the editorial team, systematically involving all three strategic regions of the Association for Information Systems (AIS), contributes to a wide reach both of authors and readership. Last but not least, the journal’s strong commitment to fast turn-around times further facilitates knowledge dissemination and discourse in our field. In this issue, we publish two papers that we deem thought provoking and influential in important contemporary research areas.

Predator-prey / Obligate Mutualism in Information System Security and Usage
Norman Pendegraft, University of Idaho, USA
Abstract
In this paper, I model the interaction of an information system, its users, and its attackers as an ecological system with three populations. I model the relationship between users and the system as an obligate mutualism and the relationship between the system and the attackers as a predator-prey relationship. Sensitivity analysis on a numerical example suggests that the model is consistent with expectations of economic reality. Critical point analysis suggests that defenses that reduce the reward to attackers are superior to those that reduce damage to assets.

Using a Work System Perspective to Expand BPM Research Use Cases
Steven Alter, University of San Francisco, USA
Jan Recker, Queensland University of Technology, Australia
Abstract
Business process management (BPM) has developed as a research field primarily situated in the computer and information systems sciences. Recently, van der Aalst (2013) analyzed the results of these research efforts and identified a set of research topics in the form of a series of BPM research use cases. Those BPM research use cases emphasize technological and computational challenges and solutions. Ideally, however, BPM research should also address managerial and organizational challenges that the existing technically oriented research use cases do not fully reflect. We propose expanding the scope and impact of BPM research by drawing on work system theory (WST) to identify new BPM research use cases and directions. After comparing a WST perspective on basic BPM topics with the technically oriented BPM perspective expressed in van der Aalst (2013), we present new research topics that extend the technically oriented BPM research use cases in van der Aalst (2013). We also present new research directions that go beyond those use cases. Taken together, the extensions of the existing research use cases and the new use cases lead to a more balanced BPM research agenda that more fully blends technical and managerial challenges.
