ScalA16: Workshop on Latest Advances in
Scalable Algorithms for Large-Scale Systems
held in conjunction with the
SC16: The International Conference on High Performance
Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis
in cooperation with ACM SIGHPC
November 13, 2016, Salt Lake City, UT, USA
<http://www.csm.ornl.gov/srt/conferences/Scala/2016>
Novel scalable scientific algorithms are needed in order to enable key
science applications to exploit the computational power of large-scale
systems. This is especially true for the current tier of leading petascale
machines and the road to exascale computing as HPC systems continue to scale
up in compute node and processor core count. These extreme-scale systems
require novel scientific algorithms to hide network and memory latency, have
very high computation/communication overlap, have minimal communication, and
have no synchronization points.
Scientific algorithms for multi-petaflop and exa-flop systems also need to be
fault tolerant and fault resilient, since the probability of faults increases
with scale. Resilience at the system software and at the algorithmic level is
needed as a crosscutting effort. Finally, with the advent of heterogeneous
compute nodes that employ standard processors as well as GPGPUs, scientific
algorithms need to match these architectures to extract the most performance.
This includes different system-specific levels of parallelism as well as
co-scheduling of computation. Key science applications require novel
mathematical models and system software that address the scalability and
resilience challenges of current- and future-generation extreme-scale HPC
systems.
Submission Guidelines
Authors are invited to submit manuscripts in English structured as technical
papers not exceeding 8 letter size (8.5in x 11in) pages including figures,

Introduction
In the next 25 years, most of the things and devices we interact with will
be linked to a global computing infrastructure (Broy & Schmidt,2014). This
massive integration of communicating capabilities on physical objects
symbolizes the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT represents
a new tendency on IT industry, in which physical environment is populated
by interconnected and communicating objects, capable of interacting with
each other and with the environment itself. The strength of this concept
lies in the seamlessly integration of sensors, actuators and other devices
in the environment in a large scale, allowing interacting and collecting
information from this. According to Sundmaeker et al. (2010), things on
the IoT are expected to become active, participating in business,
information and social process.
Several factors are contributing the increasing development of IoT, among
them the cost of sensors, bandwidth and processing power that have decline
in the last years (Jones, 2014). Thanks to current technology and its
reducing costs, IoT is already becoming a reality. Nowadays, it is
possible to put a wireless interface on almost all every day object,
making possible interaction between them (Paridel et al., 2010). Such
communicating capabilities open countless opportunities in different
application domains, like health-care and smart cities, just to name a
very few.
One of the most important outcomes of IoT is the possibility of creating
an unprecedented amount of data, which has to be stored and used
intelligently for smart monitoring and actuation (Gubbi et al., 2013).
This ability of sensing physical phenomena or triggering actions on the
physical reality is what differentiates IoT from traditional networked
systems. IoT focus is on data and information, since, from the conceptual
standpoint, IoT is about entities acting as providers and/or consumers of
data related to the physical world (Miorandi et al., 2012). The challenge
therefore concerns how to opportunistically explore collected information
from IoT environment. Appropriate data analysis and data mining techniques
are necessary in order to explore IoT data, but analyzing such data
represents a scalability issue, both on the data volume and on its
distribution over the environment. The collected data is also
characterized by its dynamicity and its heterogeneity, which represents an
interesting challenge for data analysis techniques.
To fully exploit the potential of billions of loosely connected devices,
IoT applications and systems must face communication, data management,
security and computing challenges without precedent. Currently, computing
IoT data is been performed mostly on cloud computing infrastructures since
storage and computing power of IoT devices is often limited. Indeed, cloud
computing are offering powerful and flexible capabilities for running IoT
data services and applications by using Internet infrastructure (Serrano
et al., 2013). By using cloud platforms, it is possible to analyze
increasingly volume of data, following an on-demand model, in which new
resources can be easily allocated according application needs. Despite its
advantages, cloud platforms have also some important drawbacks. Among
these, we may cite security and privacy concerns, as well as network
latency (Hofmann & Woods, 2010). Indeed, the transfer of large volume of
data from IoT environments to cloud platforms may be significantly costly
and time consuming. As response time is a potential source of problems for
delay-sensitive applications (idem, 2010), some recent works focus on how
to leverage the available resources closer to the user through the use of
pervasive grids, alone or in collaboration with distant cloud
infrastructures. Pervasive grids seamlessly integrate pervasive
sensing/actuating instruments and devices together with classical high
performance systems (Parashar & Pierson, 2010), and represent an
opportunity to deploy computing and data analysis tasks in computing
resources available around IoT devices, minimizing data transfer over
distant network. Pervasive grids offer the possibility of consuming
computing power and storage from any available resources, independently of
its nature, from small devices like Raspberry Pi up to clusters or cloud
infrastructures (Steffenel & Kirsch-Pinheiro, 2015).
In spite of the recent advances on IoT, there are still several challenges
to be tackled when carrying computations, data analysis and data
management in systems at the IoT scale. In this special issue, we are
seeking new and unpublished work in the domain of IoT and pervasive
systems targeting cloud and pervasive platforms for IoT. More
specifically, we look for network, data management and data mining
techniques adapted to the dynamicity and scalability of IoT.

Call for Papers
Technology Adoption, Use and Diffusion Research at the Crossroad
Submissions Due: Wednesday, September 14, 2016 (Final deadline; there will be no deadline extension)
When the technology acceptance model (TAM, Davis 1989) was developed in 1989 computers were new and alien to many organizations and individuals. At that time, technologies were designed to automate administrative and transactional work typically by utilizing large enterprise systems. Now digital technologies are ubiquitous in every aspect of our societies, work, and lives. With an unrelenting pace of innovation, technology acceptance includes smartphones, social media, wearable devices, IoT, and digital agents (e.g. Siri and Amazon's Echo), that are used in many new business and personal contexts. Organizations and consumers now face many new dilemmas, new questions, and new uncertainties. Individuals might on the one side be challenged to adapt to the changes induced by the infiltration of digital technologies. They might feel a great uncertainty about these technologies and might have the impression that they are able to deal with this development in both the private and the busine
ss world. On the other hand, individuals might use digital technologies to take advantage of the benefits provided to the individual or organization. Some of these heavy users are called 'digital natives' as they were born in a world that is used to information technology. Hence, it is not a challenge to explain their adoption of these technologies. Nevertheless, these heavy users of digital technologies might become addicted to their use inducing new challenges for individuals, organizations and societies. As an implication, Thomas Davenport concluded in his keynote at the CIO symposium at ICIS 2015 in Fort Worth that "we need to begin preparing people for the impacts of these technologies".
As a consequence of this development, technology adoption and diffusion research is at the crossroads. Digital technologies infuse and shape our daily lives, yet many of our core theoretical perspectives derive from the time when computers where new and unknown to many individuals, in general. Hence, this development provides scholarly opportunities to discuss new theoretical underpinnings and methodological approaches that require novel approaches to understand how individuals, organizations or societies adopt and use information technology. Now in its 26th year the SIGADIT community offers the 2016 DIGIT workshop to provide researchers with an opportunity to discuss the implications of this development. In line with the general theme of ICIS 2016 we invite papers that exemplify crossroad issues of the acceptance, use and diffusion of digital technologies. We would also like to encourage contributions that use new methodological approaches that are based on the diffusion of digital
technologies (e.g. big data analytics) to study technology adoption, use and diffusion phenomena. Potential topics related to the theme of the 2016 DIGIT workshop include (but are not limited to):
* Organizational adoption and use of digital technologies
* Individual acceptance and use of digital technologies
* Factors enabling or inhibiting acceptance and use of digital technologies (e.g. individual's trust of digital technologies)
* Positive and negative consequences of using digital technologies for both organizations and individuals
* New theoretical perspectives on acceptance, use and diffusion of digital technologies
* New methodological approaches to study acceptance, use and diffusion of digital technologies
Submitted research can be conceptual, analytical, design-oriented, or empirical in nature. The workshop will include paper presentations, paper roundtables, panel discussions and poster presentations.
***Instructions for Contributors***
In the interest of discussing the most current research in this area, we welcome
* Full research papers (twenty double-spaced pages)
* Research-in-progress papers (page limit ten double-spaced pages)
* Research idea abstracts (two double-spaced pages)
All submissions will be blind reviewed. Papers should not have been published previously in proceedings or journals, nor be under review elsewhere, but it is the general objective of the workshop that they will be submitted to a premier outlet after the DIGIT workshop.
Submission will be published in the AIS Electronic Library. The authors can choose whether they want the full paper or only an extended abstract to be published. For past submissions see: http://aisel.aisnet.org/digit/
***Instructions for Submissions***
The deadline for submission of papers is Wednesday, September 14, 2016. This is the final deadline; there will be no deadline extension. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be made in late October.
All papers should be double-spaced and submitted in Microsoft Word format. Full research and research-in-progress papers should include an abstract. Page counts exclude the title page, references and appendices. The title page should include the paper title and the authors' names, affiliations, and e-mail addresses. The main body of the paper should have a title, but no author identification. Please use the DIGIT 2016 paper template, which can be found online at http://www.sigadit.net/digit.html. This year, all paper submissions should be sent electronically as a Microsoft Word attachment to digit.workshop(a)gmail.com. Questions regarding paper submissions should be directed to the program chair Sven Laumer (mailto:sven.laumer@uni-bamberg.de).

22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces
IUI 2017
St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus
March 13-16, 2017
http://iui.acm.org/2017
<http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/%7Egeorge/lm/lm.php?tk=YXNpcy5vcmcgLAkJCXdpQGFpZmIu…>
*Overview*
ACM IUI 2017 is the 22nd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces
community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting
outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces.
The 22nd edition of the conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus.
Limassol (or Lemesos) is a multicultural bustling town, flanked by two
ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and guarded by the Amathusian
Aphrodite and Appolo Hylates. It is a town of great visual diversity and
contrast from spectacular seafront views, historic places like the mediaeval
Castle, and Byzantine churches. Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two
Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping,
nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well
beyond
the expectations of a Mediterranean island.
ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets
the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields
such as
psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design
or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and
machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as
solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine
learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge
representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any
relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations.
IUI 2017 is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in
conjunction with the conference. The goal of the workshops is to provide a
venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal
forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Workshops will be held
on the first day of the conference. We invite submissions of full-day (6
hours)
and half-day (3 hours) workshop proposals on any of the conference topics.
We encourage proposals for a wide range of workshops, including but not
limited to:
· "Mini-conferences" on specialized topics; such workshops may have their
own paper submission and review processes.
· "Late breaking work" meetings; such workshops usually have a lighter
review process (e.g. based on abstracts only).
· "Hands-on" workshops around a specific problem or topic that may wish to
ask participants to submit a position statement.
· "Project centric" workshops that may be closely related to the scope of an
existing large scale (e.g. EU funded) project.
· "Mini-competitions", challenges, or hack-a-thons around selected topics
with individual or team participation.
*Proposal Format

** Third Call for Workshop Proposals ***
22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces
IUI 2017
St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus
March 13-16, 2017
http://iui.acm.org/2017
Overview
Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two
Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping,
nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well beyond
the expectations of a Mediterranean island.
ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets
the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as
psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design
or the arts.
We invite submissions of full-day (6 hours)
and half-day (3 hours) workshop proposals on any of the conference topics.

MOTIVATION
===========
The workshop follows the previous SPeL 2008, SPeL 2009, SPeL 2010, SPeL
2011, DULP & SPeL 2012, SPeL 2013, SPeL 2014 and SPeL 2015 workshops, held
in conjunction with the SAINT 2008 conference, WI/IAT 2009 conference,
DEXA 2010 conference, ICWL 2011 conference, ICALT 2012 conference, ICSTCC
2013 conference, ICWL 2014 conference and ICSLE 2015 conference
respectively. The general topic of the workshop is the social and personal
computing for web-supported learning communities.
Web-based learning is moving from centralized, institution-based systems
to a decentralized and informal creation and sharing of knowledge. Social
software (e.g., blogs, wikis, social bookmarking systems, media sharing
services) is increasingly being used for e-learning purposes, helping to
create novel learning experiences and knowledge. In the world of pervasive
Internet, learners are also evolving: the so-called "digital natives" want
to be in constant communication with their peers, they expect an
individualized instruction and a personalized learning environment, which
automatically adapt to their individual needs. The challenge in this
context is to provide intelligent and adaptive support for collaborative
learning, taking into consideration the individual differences between
learners.
This workshop deals with current research on the interplay between
collaboration and personalization issues for supporting intelligent
learning environments. Its aim is to provide a forum for discussing new
trends and initiatives in this area, including research about the
planning, development, application, and evaluation of intelligent learning
environments, where people can learn together in a personalized way
through social interaction with other learners.
The workshop is targeted at academic researchers, developers,
educationists and practitioners interested in innovative uses of social
media and adaptation techniques for the advancement of intelligent
learning environments. The proposed field is interdisciplinary and very
dynamic, taking into account the recent advent of Web 2.0 and ubiquitous
personalization, and it is hoped to attract a large audience.

Betreff: [AISWorld] CFP: Special Issue on 'Social Computing and Service
Innovation': Journal of Electronic Commerce and Organisational
Computing, deadline: November 15, 2016 (Babak Abedin)
Datum: Fri, 24 Jun 2016 16:36:21 +1000
Von: Babak Abedin <babak.abedin(a)gmail.com>
An: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org
Call for submissions for *Journal of Organizational Computing and
Electronic Commerce (JOCEC): *Special Issue on “Social Computing and
Service Innovation”
*Guest Editors*
Dr. Babak Abedin (Faculty of Engineering & IT, University of Technology
Sydney, Australia, babak.abedin(a)uts.edu.au)
Dr. Hamed Qahri-Saremi (College of Business and Management, University of
Illinois at Springfield, USA, hqahr2(a)uis.edu)
*Aims and Objectives*
Service innovation is defined as the exchange and application of
competences (knowledge and skills) to create novel resources that are
beneficial to some actors inside and/or outside of organizations (Lusch and
Nambisan 2015). Unlike the past, when service innovations were
predominantly developed from within the confines of an organization,
nowadays they can emerge from the interactions within a network of actors
ranging from suppliers and partners to customers and independent inventors.
This evolution in service innovation development can be mainly ascribed to
the advent and proliferation of social computing technologies (Kanter,
2015; Tsou & Chen, 2012). Social computing technologies refer to the
IT-enabled social applications and services such as online communities,
blogging services, chat applications, and social media services that
facilitate collaborations within a network of actors through exchange of
experiences and specialized competences and evolution of aggregate
knowledge (Parameswaran and Whinston 2007). Social computing technologies
have enabled organizations to unprecedentedly interact and collaborate with
external actors such as customers and business partners to improve their
processes, operations, and value propositions (Tsou & Chen, 2012). Although
social computing technologies are giving rise to new forms of service
innovations, their implications for service innovations have yet to be
fully elucidated in the research findings.
Thus, the theme of this special issue highlights the need for
conceptualization and empirical study of the implications of social
computing technologies for service innovation. For this special issue, we
call for high quality research studies from academia, industry,
governments, and non-profits, especially collaborations among these groups,
to address tensions and/or synergies that may arise between social
computing and service innovation. We welcome examination of these synergies
and/or tensions at the societal, organizational, group/team, and individual
levels of analysis. We solicit case studies, surveys, experiments,
qualitative research, and collaborative action research among academics,
executives, and policy makers that illustrate innovative approaches,
resolutions, and solutions to these tensions, risks, and opportunities. We
especially seek papers that offer theoretical models combined with
evidences of the consequences or findings of observations related to these
models. The papers included in this special issue could include, but not
limited, to the following areas:
· Positivist, interpretive, and critical studies of the use of social
computing applications in support of service innovation
· Impacts of social computing on service innovation
· Affordances of social computing technologies for service innovation
· Implications of social computing in organizational IS value research
· New theories in social computing and service innovation
· Opportunities and challenges of service innovation in the social
computing context
· Design and evaluation methodologies for social computing
technologies in support of service innovation
· Ethical and legal issues of social computing for service innovation
· Service innovation using virtual 3D social environments
· Implications of social computing for value co-creation
*Timeline for the Special Issue*:
· *November 15, 2016* – full paper submission deadline for JOCEC
Special Issue review process.
· *March 15, 2017* – notification of acceptance
· *May 15, 2017* – final versions of accepted papers will be submitted
