3rd International Workshop on Smart Sensor Protocols and Algorithms (SSPA 2015)
http://jlloret.webs.upv.es/sspa2015/
in conjunction with The 8th IFIP Wireless and Mobile Networking Conference (WMNC' 15)
Munich, Germany, October 5-7, 2015.
http://www.wmnc2015.com/
SCOPE:
Smart Sensor protocols and algorithms make use of several methods and techniques (such as machine learning techniques, decision making techniques, knowledge representation, network optimization, problem solution techniques, and so on), to establish communication between network devices. They can be used to perceive the network conditions, or the user behavior, in order to dynamically plan, adapt, decide, take the appropriate actions, and learn from the consequences of their actions. The algorithms can make use of the information gathered from the protocol in order to sense the environment, plan actions according to the input, take consciousness of what is happening in the environment, and take the appropriate decisions using a reasoning engine. Goals such as decide which scenario fits best its end-to-end purpose, or environment prediction, can be achieved with smart protocols and algorithms. Moreover, they could learn from the past and use this knowledge to improve future de!
cisions.
In this workshop, researchers are encouraged to submit papers focused on the design, development, analysis or optimization of smart sensor protocols or algorithms at any communication layer. Algorithms and protocols based on artificial intelligence techniques for network management, network monitoring, quality of service enhancement, performance optimization and network secure are included in the workshop.

School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, Bloomington
This year we are celebrating the start of our second decade of successful and vibrant SIG-SI Research Symposia. Since 2004, established scholars, young researchers and doctoral students interested in the study of people, ICT and work and play have gathered at the SIG-SI ASIS&T Annual Research Symposium to share their work and ideas. Approximately 110 papers, posters and panels have been presented and for the past three years, we have given awards for the best papers published by Social Informatics (SI) faculty and students in the preceding years. This year we gather to celebrate a decade of intellectually challenging and engaging work in SI and hope that you will join us. Our goal remains the same: to disseminate current research and research in progress that investigates the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) across all areas of ASIS&T.
Building on the success of past years, the symposium includes members of many SIGs and defines “social” broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. It also defines “technology” broadly to include traditional technologies (i.e., paper), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include empirical, critical and theoretical work, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations.
We are particularly interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposium’s theme but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. Papers that take social informatics further in theoretical conceptualization or empirical grounding are of particular interest to SIG-SI this year as we celebrate a decade of Symposia in ASIS&T.
This year’s conference theme is “Information Science with Impact: Research in and for the Community.” In keeping with this theme, the symposium is also soliciting work from Social Informatics researchers that focuses on the impact of their work on industry, government, local/national/global community groups, individuals, information systems, GLAMs, and on other practice contexts. We are interested in work that addresses questions and issues such as the following:
• What are the social, political, economic, and legal implications of social informatics research?
• What are the ways in which social informatics research impacts various organizations, groups, and communities of practice?
• How can social informatics researchers work more closely with members of these communities?
• What can a social informatics approach tell us about roles of information and communication technologies in the work and social practices of people in these communities?
• What are the challenges and opportunities of engaging in SI work that seeks to understand and improve the work and social lives of people in these communities?
The schedule for the workshop will involve the presentations of papers and the best social informatics paper awards for 2013 (call to follow). We expect an engaging discussion with lively interactions with the audience.
Deadlines:
August 9, 2014: Submit a short paper (2000 words), a poster (500 words), or a panel (1000 words) by email to Kiotta Marshall (kiomarsh(a)indiana.edu<mailto:kiomarsh@indiana.edu>)

More information about the subject of the special issue:
In the Era of Exabytes (e.g., Google Datacenter is estimated to contain 15 exabytes [Munroe, 2014]), information on the world-wide internet has become too large and complex for traditional tools to analyze. Big data is the term used to describe this phenomenon. Big data can be understood primarily as the huge amounts of data generated by the Internet, mobile phones, tablets, etc. and characterized by the 3 V’s, Volume, Velocity, and Variety (Laney, D., 2001; McAffey & Brynjolfsson, 2012; O’Leary, 2013; Watson & Marjanovic, 2013)
Research interested in big data has been growing quickly: Sixteen published articles/editorials in 2011 with “Big Data” in their title or topic with the numbers rising to 60 in 2012, and to 217 in 2013 (Web of Science). Organizational interest and awareness of big data is also increasing as demonstrated by articles in practitioner journals and the popular press; however, not all practitioners are well-informed on the opportunities, limitations and challenges presented by big data and throughout management knowledge gaps can be identified (Davenport, 2013; LaValle, Lesser, Shockley, Hopkins, & Kruschwitz, 2011; Watson & Marjanovic, 2013).
Business analytics are “the techniques, technologies, systems, practices, methodologies, and applications”(Chen et al., 2012: 1166) that analyze big data. Analytics can help organizations to better understand the business and social environment and improve real and near real time decision making. Big data analytics, data mining and analysis, now include text, Web, network, and mobile analytics. The reach of big data and analytic knowledge is impressive and pervasive. Diverse areas such as e-commerce, market intelligence, e-government, science and technology, health and wellbeing, and security and public safety are all making use of big data and innovative analytics (Chen et al., 2012). However, big data is complex and so is the analysis of it. Extracting valuable knowledge from big data might only be possible for a limited number of highly trained personnel. Can such knowledge be made available organization wide, so everybody can benefit from it?
Big data and analytics present both opportunities and challenges in many areas of business and government. This special issue is concerned with how Knowledge Management (KM) can help address these challenges. For more than two decades KM has addressed issues of information and knowledge management in organizations and in particular in relationship to organizational decision-making. As such, KM and Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) can offer both tools and conceptual understanding in the management and use of big data and analytics in organizational management and decision-making.

Call for Submissions
Special Issue of the
Journal of Universal Computer Science
on ADVANCED RESEARCH ON SOFTWARE SECURITY DESIGN AND APPLICATIONS
Main submission deadline: November 26th, 2015
http://www.jucs.org/ujs/jucs/info/special_issues/in_preparation.html
SCOPE AND AIM
The main mission of this special issue “Advanced Research on Software
Security Design and Applications” is to be the premier and authoritative
source for the most innovative scholarly and professional research and
information pertaining to aspects of Software Security. Such issue
presents advancements in the state-of-the-art, standards, and practices
of software security, in an effort to identify emerging trends that will
ultimately define the future of “the software security.”
This special issue focuses on advanced research in the practical
applications and the theoretical foundations of software security,
through presentation of the most up-to-date advances and new directions
of research in the field from various scholarly, professional, and
practitioner perspectives. An interdisciplinary look at software
security including engineering and business aspects, such issue covers
and encourages high-quality research exposition.
This issue will explore the foundations of software security. The
important software vulnerabilities and attacks will be considered that
exploit them -- such as buffer overflows, SQL injection, and session
hijacking -- and defenses will be also considered that prevent or
mitigate these attacks, including advanced testing and program analysis
techniques. Importantly, we take a "build security in" mentality,
considering techniques at each phase of the development cycle that can
be used to strengthen the security of software systems. The objective of
this special issue is to capture the latest advances in this research
field. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the ones listed
below:
- Penetration testing
- Software Security Technologies & services
- Software Security Applications
- Software Security Architecture
- Software Security Patterns
- Software Security Standard

*Introduction and Workshop Goals*
It is quite evident that within the development of people centered smart
cities the underlying and ubiquitous techno-ecosystems - whose embedded
intelligence, sensitivity and responsiveness surround the individuals -
challenge the future of the learning ecosystems and call for a critical
and participatory redefinition of spaces, contents, processes, skills
and benchmarking approaches. Such challenge is not just for researchers
or teachers, but requires the involvement of all potential stakeholders
to develop critically the mediation role of ICT to:
• foster awareness about complexity and its government (orchestration)
• support the acquisition of appropriate behaviors, skills & competencies
• promote open access to space, tools, services, practices,
content/data, people/skills
• tame discontinuities (time - space/place - technological - process -
