Founded in 1863, Politecnico is currently one of the most outstanding universities in Europe, ranked 28th in the world and 9th in Europe among technical universities, according to the QS World University Ranking. Milan itself is considered the Italian economic and finance center, with the headquarter of the Stock Exchange and of many of the most important industrial and financial businesses of Italy, having a population of 1.3 million. It is also the Italian symbol of fashion and design: it hosts many of the main Italian fashion maisons and international design fairs, such as Settimana della Moda (Milan Fashion Week) and the Salone Internazionale del Mobile (Milan Furniture Fair). The city offers to visitors the possibility to admire a wide range of monuments, museums and buildings reflecting the vestiges of history and culture left by the people who lived there. The ancient Roman remains, the Duomo, one of the largest cathedrals in the World and an important example of Gothic architecture in Italy. The Castello Sforzesco that hosts the Michelangelos Pieta Rondanini. The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie where is the famous masterpiece The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. Expo 2015 is the next scheduled Universal Exposition and between 1 May and 31 October 2015 will be hosted in Milan. The Expo goal is no longer to show the latest advances in technology, but rather to address the challenges that human mankind faces nowadays. The Expo15 theme will be: "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life". It would be therefore great hosting BMSD 2015 in Milan, and particularly at Politecnico di Milano. It is worthwhile mentioning that many important scientists and architects studied and taught there, among them Achille Castiglioni, Gio Ponti, Renzo Piano and Aldo Rossi, both Pritzker Prize winners in 1990 and 1998 respectively, and Giulio Natta, Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry in 1963. Politecnico takes part in several research and training projects collaborating with the most qualified European universities. Such Big Data are generated from all kinds of sources and applications such as social network services, cloud services, knowledge bases, and intelligent terminals, and often in a wide variety of formats such as unstructured, semi-structured, and structured. A particular recent trend around the Web is to connect and communicate between billions of physical objects (also called "Things'), i.e., Web of Things (WoT). WoT offers the capability of integrating both physical and virtual worlds and massive volumes of real-time data are expected to be produced by these connected things and their associated sensors. While it is widely believed that Big Data holds the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our modern society (e.g., smart cities), many technical challenges need to be addressed before this potential can be realized. Indeed, Big Data requires a revisit of data analysis systems in fundamental ways at all stages from data acquisition and storage to data transformation and interpretation. Services should be ideally provisioned in a way that speeds up data processing, scales up with data volume, improves the adaptability and extensibility over data diversity and uncertainties, and finally turns low-level data into actionable knowledge towards better understanding and manipulation of Big Data. This special issue aims at presenting the latest developments, trends, and research solutions of Big Data analytics on the Web. As a result, the need to run several applications under varying workloads to meet different functional, nonfunctional, and performance requirements is increasing. Managing these new complex infrastructures via traditional means is challenging and inefficient. Hence, many organizations are looking for new directions and approaches to more efficiently manage their infrastructures to meet their customers' growing demands, ensure adaptability to changing business requirements, reduce duplication of efforts, and remain competitive. One approach organizations are adopting is software defined infrastructure (SDI) or softwarization. SDI promises to increase the IT infrastructure's flexibility and programmability, and to optimize processes, management and costs. As with any new technology, it comes with risks. But it could be a game-changer for infrastructure management. Organizations need to rethink their current approaches to managing their increasingly complex infrastructures. Adopting holistic system-oriented approaches, not piecemeal solutions, is critical.
