VaMoS 2014 focuses broadly on innovative work in the area of variability modelling and management. We particularly invite contributions with a strong variability modelling aspect, but also addressing the wider area of variability management, e.g., requirements, architecture, analysis, implementation, and evolution. The VaMoS workshop series aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners from different areas dedicated to mastering variability to discuss advantages, drawbacks, and complementarities of various approaches and to present new results for mastering variability throughout the whole lifecycle of systems, system families, and product lines. The workshop will feature invited keynotes as well as peer-reviewed paper presentations. Format ------ VaMoS 2014, like the previous VaMoS workshops, will be a highly interactive event. Each session is organized such that discussions among presenters of papers, discussants and other participants are stimulated. Typically, after a paper is presented, it is immediately discussed by pre-assigned discussants, after which a free discussion involving all participants follows. Each session is closed by a general discussion of all papers presented in the session. The workshop language is English. Attendance is open to authors of accepted papers, invited speakers, organizers, PC members, and to any guest visitors who agree to be discussants of papers. The practical operations were then organized by professor Ohsuga in Japan and professors Hannu Kangassalo and Hannu Jaakkola in Finland (Nordic countries). Geographical scope has expanded to cover Europe and also other countries. Workshop characteristic - discussion, time enough for presentations and limited number of participants (50) / papers (30) - is typical to the conference. There are even attempts to formulate the concept of play theoretically and to identify why it’s so important to our lives. We can even recall that play is one of the first things we do after we are born, constituting our first man-machine interface (with toys) and one of the first social activities we engage in. Even though playful learning is a recurrent vision in pedagogical thought, the educational system in most countries treats play as something antagonistic to learning: young students are allowed to play only during pre-defined sessions between classes and learning usually relies on formal teaching methods. This distinction was carried over, until recently, to the respective research fields in digital technologies: CS people working on games concentrated on the AI-side (how to make successful computer agents and non-player characters that play games in an unsupervised manner), while research on technology-enhanced learning looked for theoretical foundations in the most traditional learning research, missing out almost completely on concepts of engagement, playful learning and related concepts which recently emerged, such as ‘gamification’. As a result, most of the games produced for explicitly educational purposes from the collaboration of CS and TEL researchers, may have been effective with respect to their learning objectives, but they were not in the end adopted by their prospective users. In addition, game-based learning research has yet to tap into the potential of using games to cultivate creativity. While traditional media such as arts and crafts are essential to the enhancement of certain creative skills, games can be used to explore approaches to enhancing creativity that draw upon the broader digitally mediated culture: playing games requires creative skills that many students are now familiar with in terms of learning and then optimising the mechanics of a game. This special issue of the IxD&A journal intends to expand the results of the Games for learning workshops at the Intelligent Tutoring Systems 2012 (http://www.image.ece.ntua.gr/events/its-emotion-in-games/) and Foundations of Digital Games 2013 (http://sirenproject.eu/content/fdg-2013-workshop-games-for-learning) conferences, by bringing together researchers from the fields of games research, game AI, intelligent systems, affective computing, design, human-computer interaction and user experience with people from the fields of education, technology-enhanced learning, cognitive sciences, psychology and ergonomics in order to foster the exchange of ideas and experiences from designing, developing and evaluating learning games in terms of usability and learning effect. Furthermore, organizations are challenged how to best prevent knowledge loss during knowledge sharing activities. The conference theme of the PDC 2014 is “Reflecting connectedness”. We are currently experiencing a technologically pushed trend in ‘being always connected’. This is manifested in a number of designed artifacts, such as smart-phones, social networks, computer supported cooperative work and distributed working tools.By ‘reflecting connectedness’ in PD, we acknowledge influential relations across continents, societies, people, disciplines and time, beyond the direct involvement of stakeholders. While PD has evolved as a discipline on its own, we should continuously reflect on interrelations of theories and practices within and across the field and thereby enriching PD within a wider context. Research papers should report on original research which advances Participatory Design (PD) and reflect on state of the art themes in our field. As a single track conference, and the only one exclusively dedicated to PD, PDC Research papers have a broad impact on the development of PD theory, approaches and practices. Research papers will be published in the ACM International Conference series. Each submitted paper will be double blind reviewed by at least 3 reviewers. Each submission will be managed by a meta-reviewer to ensure that feedback is relevant, the learning experience significant and the process fair. Please make sure your submission is correctly anonymized. Accepted papers should be revised according to the review reports and the language should be checked by a native English speaker. Short papers: (short papers – maximum 4 pages). Short papers should present original, unpublished ideas and research that advances the field of Participatory Design (PD) and reflect on its potential future developments. As discussed in parallel, thematic sessions, PDC Short Papers can benefit from a clear scope and are expected to contribute to the emergence of new possibilities for PD. Compared to Research Papers, Short Papers may offer a more limited discussion of related work, or they may, for example, provide a novel design, method or theoretical concepts, without a full evaluation or with less detailed explanation. Short Papers are reviewed to the same standard of scientific quality as Research Papers, but the contribution is more focused and clear-cut. Each submitted short paper will be double blind reviewed by at least 3 reviewers. Please make sure submissions are anonymous. Accepted papers should be revised according to the review reports and the language should be checked by a native English speaker. Interactive Workshops: (maximum 2 pages) The workshop proposal should describe half day or full day sessions on topics that include methods, practices, and other areas of interest related to Participatory Design (PD). They should support an interactive format wherein active participation is possible, beyond a presentation format. These formats could include a mapping of a problem definition, small discussion groups, etc. The proposal must be written in a format that can be used for recruitment via the web. It should justify the need for the workshop and should contain a title, goals, format, method or technique, its relevance to PD and a schedule. Intended participants and how they will be recruited should also be described. In the recruitment procedure important dates should be clearly communicated to the participants (see timing). Also, it should be clear to the organizers and the participants what the maximum amount of participants is for the workshop and what the workshop duration is (half day or full day). Finally, the workshop proposal should include a clear statement about the expected outcomes of the workshop (e.g. journal publication, research proposal, exhibition, etc.). Tutorials: (2 page proposal) Half day and full day sessions for teaching conceptual frameworks, methods/techniques, and novel approaches in Participatory Design (PD). The proposal should contain a title, goals, method or technique, relevance to PD and a schedule. Please describe in the proposal any handouts that you intend to make available. Industry Cases: (2-4 page case description) should report on the use of participatory methods, tools, and/or practices within commercial, non-profit, or governmental organizations. We are interested in a broad range of submissions that explore what a participatory approach means to different practitioners and audiences and may include ideas, approaches, projects, experimentations or reflections on participation. We encourage submissions from practitioners who might not ordinarily attend the Participatory Design (PD) conference but who are grappling with the complexities of participation or who are experimenting with novel approaches. Cases should highlight the benefits, challenges, and outcomes from the application of participatory approaches and should provide concrete lessons for others who are interested in applying PD in their organizations. Each submitted case will be peer reviewed for applicability to the PD community. Doctoral consortium: (4 page proposal) The doctoral consortium is a full-day session intended for PhD students working within the field of Participatory Design (PD). It will provide students with an opportunity to discuss issues of concern to them in their studies and receive extensive feedback from the session co-chairs and other student participants. Enrollment is limited and selection will be based on the quality of application submissions, taking into account how the research is related to PD. The aim will be to include a spread of students with different disciplinary emphases, at different stages of study, and coming from different cultural backgrounds. The proposal should give an overview of the PhD project, including research motivations, questions, methods, status of current work, major findings and plans for further research. Accepted applicants will be asked to provide a revised and elaborated research summary (4 pages), and to participate in some pre-workshop on-line discussions. Art installations: (2 page proposal) Interdisciplinary collaborations have often yielded surprising yet astonishing results, leading both research and knowledge to new heights. PDC has a long history of incorporating participatory art installations to inspire and innovate. Artists and designers working with any form of interactive participatory methods are invited to submit their projects. The works can take inspiration from visual and digital media, performance arts, installations, communication technologies, touch, sound and any other genres that allow participants to take part or become part of the art piece. Projects should address/explore the theme ‘reflecting connectedness’. Please submit a 2 page proposal of the art work, in which the project is described (incl. sketch/design), the relation to PD, and specific requirements for display. Alternatively artists can submit audio or video files describing the project. The Artful Integrators’ Award: We welcome nominations for the sixth Artful Integrators’ Award, to be presented at PDC 14 in Namibia. The Award is intended to recognize outstanding achievement in the area of participatory design of information and communications technologies. Where traditional design awards have gone to individual designers and/or singular objects, the Artful Integrator’s Award emphasizes the importance of collaborative participation in design, and a view of good design as the effective alignment of diverse collections of people, practices and artefacts. Submission and formatting guidelines The submissions in all categories are subject to double-blind peer review. For previous PDC conferences, the acceptance rate for research papers has been about 25% and for the other submission categories about 50%.All submissions should follow thePDC paper template to be found on the conference website (www.pdc2014.org). The increasing number of data, regulations, policies and their updates is resulting by a huge number of semi-structured heterogeneous documents including semantic and multilingual problems, etc. On the other hand, globalization, migration, financial crisis, climate changes and other natural hazards that may happen either locally or across the globe are putting new challenges to e-government, e.g. how to provide accurate information to citizens with respect to their constitutional laws and to businesses with respect to desired economic growth. Aside from the financial costs and threats to the success of E-government are challenges that have often been overlooked or ignored. E.g. governments have not employed many democratic strategies in tailoring e-government services to match citizen’s and/or business requirements. Additionally, different or even the same levels of governments are suffering by too much heterogeneity of data and standards in use. The objective of this book is to address which services in e-government should be provided to users and how: i.e. dealing with existing data, new data acquisition, even in real time, and intelligent data bringing to either citizens or to business in an accurate, timely and secure manner. At the same time the interoperability within an e-government, in B2G and B2C domain should be at the highest possible level. To achieve these goals the effective usage of advanced Web technologies such as crowdsourcing, data mashup, ontologies, Web services, Internet of Things and their power effective combination should be analyze, develop and deploy in e-government services. Despite the common interoperability goals above in depth analysis of specific domain requirements should also be taken into account. New approaches, including thinking about new possibilities for the Internet of Things and the Internet of Services and for “cloud oriented” approaches is also of real interest to researchers who hope to solve these problems. E-Government applications play a part in the evolution of future technologies, promise a new way to share and discover information, and may improve business and government exchange capability. Moving toward real business intelligence, many researchers hope to discover where intelligent agents and Semantic Web technologies fit in now and how they support the goal of improving Electronic government services at the highest possible level. Call details ============ While computing is provided by the cloud and services increasingly pervade our daily lives, dependability and security are no longer restricted to mission or safety critical applications, but rather become a cornerstone of the information society. Unfortunately, large-scale, dynamic, and heterogeneous software systems that typically run continuously, often tend to become inert, brittle, and vulnerable after a while. The key problem is that the most innovative systems and applications are the ones that also suffer most from a significant decrease in dependability and security when compared to traditional critical systems, where dependability and security are fairly well understood as complementary concepts and a variety of proven methods and techniques is available today. In accordance with Laprie we call this effect the dependability gap, which is widened in front of us between demand and supply of dependability, and we can see this trend further fueled by the demand for resource awareness, green computing, and increasing cost pressure. Among technical factors of dependability, software development methods, tools, and techniques contribute to dependability, as defects in software products and services may lead to failure and also provide typical access for malicious attacks. In addition, there is a wide variety of fault and intrusion tolerance techniques available, including persistence provided by databases, redundancy and replication, group communication, transaction monitors, reliable middleware, cloud infrastructures, fragmentation-redundancy-scattering, and trustworthy service-oriented architectures with explicit control of quality of service properties and service level agreements. Furthermore, adaptiveness is envisaged in order to react to observed, or act upon expected changes of the system itself, the context/environment (e.g., resource variability or failure/threat scenarios) or users' needs and expectations. Provided without explicit user intervention, this is also termed autonomous behavior or self-properties, and often involves monitoring, diagnosis (analysis, interpretation), and reconfiguration (repair). In particular, adaptation is also a means to achieve dependability and security in a computing infrastructure with dynamically varying structure and properties. Moreover, such technologies and tools have fundamentally transformed how various external and internal stakeholder relationships are influenced and managed, how brand loyalty is built, how talent is attracted and employment commitment is built, how innovations (products, services, business models, processes) are created and appropriated, how knowledge is created and shared both within and across organizational boundaries, how funding is raised, how control is exercised, how policies are developed and diffused, and how laws are interpreted. This special issue invites papers that build our understanding of these phenomena. We welcome papers from a wide range of disciplines as well as papers based on either quantitative or qualitative approaches. Implications of findings for theory and practice are essential and we encourage papers that extend existing theories. Questions addressed by papers suitable for the special issue could include the following: · How can our theories better account for the strategic use of social media? What are the implications of such use to the theories of the firm? · How have social media shaped policy and strategy making in organizations and societies? What are the implications of such use to theories of organizations? The 4th International Conference on Cloud Computing and Services Science, CLOSER 2014, focuses on the emerging area of Cloud Computing, inspired by some latest advances that concern the infrastructure, operations, and available services through the global network. Further, the conference considers as essential the link to Services Science, acknowledging the service-orientation in most current IT-driven collaborations. The conference is nevertheless not about the union of these two (already broad) fields, but about Cloud Computing where we are also interested in how Services Science can provide theory, methods and techniques to design, analyze, manage, market and study various aspects of Cloud Computing. We would like to highlight the presence of the following keynote speakers: - Helge Meinhard, CERN, IT Department, Switzerland - Paulo Goncalves, INRIA-RESO, LIP, Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, France CLOSER is interested in promoting high quality research as it can be confirmed by last year acceptance rates, where from 142 submissions, 18% were accepted as full papers. Additionally, 17% were presented as short papers and 20% as posters. Submitted papers will be subject to a double-blind review process. All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings, under an ISBN reference, on paper and on CD-ROM support. The proceedings will be submitted for indexation by Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index (ISI), INSPEC, DBLP and EI (Elsevier Index) and Scopus. All papers presented at the conference venue will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library (http://www.scitepress.org/DigitalLibrary). SCITEPRESS is member of CrossRef (http://www.crossref.org). Best paper awards will be distributed during the conference closing session.
