CALL FOR PAPERS & CALL FOR WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIAL PROPOSALS
ACM Web Science Conference (WebSci'14), June 23-26, 2014
Bloomington, Indiana, USA
websci14.org / @WebSciConf / #WebSci14
Deadline for papers: Feb. 23rd 2014
Deadline for workshop & tutorial proposals: Jan. 17th 2014
Web Science is the emergent science of the people, organizations,
applications, and of policies that shape and are shaped by the Web,
the largest informational artifact constructed by humans in history.
Web Science embraces the study of the Web as a vast universal
information network of people and communities. As such, Web Science
includes the study of social networks whose work, expression, and play
take place on the Web. The social sciences and computational sciences
meet in Web Science and complement one another: Studying human
behavior and social interaction contributes to our understanding of
the Web, while Web data is transforming how social science is
conducted. The Web presents us with a great opportunity as well as an
obligation: If we are to ensure the Web benefits humanity we must do
our best to understand it.
Call for Papers
The Web Science conference is inherently interdisciplinary, as it
attempts to integrate computer and information sciences,
communication, linguistics, sociology, psychology, economics, law,
political science, philosophy, digital humanities, and other
disciplines in pursuit of an understanding of the Web. This
conference is unique in the manner in which it brings these
disciplines together in creative and critical dialogue, and we invite
papers from all the above disciplines, and in particular those that
cross traditional disciplinary boundaries.
Following the success of WebSci'09 in Athens, WebSci'10 in Raleigh,
WebSci'11 in Koblenz, WebSci '12 in Evanston, and WebSci'13 in Paris,
for the 2014 conference we are seeking papers and posters that
describe original research, analysis, and practice in the field of Web
Science, as well as work that discusses novel and thought-provoking
ideas and works-in-progress.
Possible topics for submissions include, but are not limited to, the
following:
* Analysis of human behavior using social media, mobile devices, and
online communities
* Methodological challenges of analyzing Web-based
* large-scale social interaction
* Data-mining and network analysis of the Web and human communities on
the Web
* Detailed studies of micro-level processes and interactions
* on the Web
* Collective intelligence, collaborative production, and social
computing
* Theories and methods for computational social science on the Web
* Studies of public health and health-related behavior on the Web
* The architecture and philosophy of the Web
* The intersection of design and human interaction on the Web
* Economics and social innovation on the Web
* Governance, democracy, intellectual property, and the commons
* Personal data, trust, and privacy
* Web and social media research ethics
* Studies of Linked Data, the Cloud, and digital eco-systems
* Big data and the study of the Web
* Web access, literacy, and development
* Knowledge, education, and scholarship on and through the Web
* People-driven Web technologies, including crowd-sourcing, open data,
and new interfaces
* Digital humanities
* Arts & culture on the Web or engaging audiences using Web resources
* Web archiving techniques and scholarly uses of Web archives
* New research questions and thought-provoking ideas
A separate Call for Workshop and Tutorial Proposals is on the
conference website at:
http://www.websci14.org/#call-for-workshop-and-tutorial-proposals
Submission
Web Science is necessarily a very selective single track conference
with a rigorous review process. To accommodate the distinct traditions
of its many disciplines, we provide three different submission
formats: full papers, short papers, and posters. For all types of
submissions, inclusion in the ACM DL proceedings will be by default,
but not mandatory (opt-out via EasyChair). All accepted research
papers (full and short papers) will be presented during the
single-track conference. All accepted posters will be given a spot in
the single-track lightning talk session, and room to present their
papers during a dedicated poster session.
Full research papers (5 to 10 pages, ACM double column, 20 mins
presentation including Q&A)
Full research papers should present new results and original work that
has not been previously published. Research papers should present
substantial theoretical, empirical, methodological, or policy-oriented
contributions to research and/or practice.
Short research papers (up to 5 pages, ACM double column, 15 mins
presentation including Q&A)
Short research papers should present new results and original work
that has not been previously published. Research papers can present
preliminary theoretical, empirical, methodological, or policy-oriented
contributions to research and/or practice.
Posters (up to 2 pages, ACM double column, lightning talk + poster
presentation)
Extended abstracts for posters, which should be in English, can be up
to 2 pages.
Submission instructions
Full and short paper and poster submissions should be formatted
according to the official ACM SIG proceedings template (WebSci archive
format at http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates).
Please submit papers using EasyChair at
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=websci2014.
Other creative submission formats (flexible formats)
Other types of creative submissions are also encouraged, and the exact
format and style of presentation are open. Examples might include
artistic performances or installations, interactive exhibits,
demonstrations, or other creative formats. For these submissions, the
proposers should make clear both what they propose to do, and any
special requirements they would need to successfully do it (in terms
of space, time, technology, etc.)
Review
The Web Science program committee consists of a program committee that
covers all relevant areas of Web Science. Each submission will be
refereed by three PC members and one short meta review written by a
Co-PC chair, to cover both the research background of each submission
as well as the necessary interdisciplinary aspects.
(Optional) Archival Proceedings in the ACM Digital Library
All accepted papers and posters will by default appear in the Web
Science 2014 Conference Proceedings and can also be made available
through the ACM Digital Library, in the same length and format of the
submission unless indicated otherwise (those wishing not to be indexed
and archived can "opt out" of the proceedings).
Call for Workshops and Tutorial Proposals
The Web Science conference will start with tutorials and workshops
that will promote in-depth training and discussions with the goal of
understanding how people, organizations, applications, and policies
shape and are shaped by the Web. In agreement with the spirit of the
conference, the tutorials and workshops are intended to create
opportunities for interdisciplinary discussion around themes and
methods that are central to the study of the Web. The list of themes
includes, but is not restricted to,
1. Methods for data mining and network research;
2. The study of social dynamics (i.e. political campaigns, censorship)
using Web data;
3. The relationship between technical design and individual behaviour
(i.e. the impact of by-default design on privacy);
4. The future of the Web in an era of increasing mobile applications;
5. The incentives and limits of regulation;
6. Participatory systems and crowdsourcing;
7. The dynamics of information creation (supply) and consumption
(demand) and its relation to real world events.
We will give priority to proposals that approach their topic from the
perspective of various disciplines, spanning the divide between the
social and computer sciences. Tutorials and workshops can be designed
as half or full day events. Workshops can have a mixture of panel
presentations and invited speakers, but presentations should reflect
the diversity of approaches that characterize the multidisciplinary
nature of Web Science.
For more information about chairs, submission, review, deadlines, etc,
please see the full call at
http://websci14.org/#call-for-workshop-and-tutorial-proposals or

Call For Workshop Proposals
International Conference
on Active Media Technology 2014 (AMT?14)
http://wic2014.mimuw.edu.pl/amt/homepage
=======================================================================
The Program Committees of the 2014 Web Intelligence Congress invite
proposals for workshops in all areas related to Active Media Technology,
its foundations and applications. WIC 2014 is a Special Event of Web25
celebrating 25 years of the Web. Active Media Technology 2014 (AMT'14)
will be collocated with three other top-quality international
conferences.
- IEEE/WIC/ACM Web Intelligence 2014 (WI'14)
- IEEE/WIC/ACM Intelligent Agent Technology 2014 (IAT'14)
- Brain Informatics & Heath 2014 (BIH'14)
The conferences are co-located in order to bring together researchers
and practitioners from diverse fields with the purpose of exploring the
fundamental roles, interactions and practical impacts of Artificial
Intelligence and Advanced Information Technology. The workshops will be
held within the Conference at the historical Central Campus of the
University of Warsaw, Warsaw, Poland, between 11th and 14th of August
2014.
The main objectives of the Active Media Technology 2014 workshops is to
stimulate and facilitate active exchange, interaction and comparison of
approaches, methods and ideas related to diverse areas of Active Media
Technology. Each workshop subject will focus on new and emerging
research challenges related to the themes of the conference. The
workshops should provide an informal and vibrant forum for researchers
and industry practitioners to share their research results and practical
development experiences in the field. The aim of the workshops should be
to provide the participants with an opportunity to discuss specific
technical topics in an atmosphere that fosters active exchange of ideas.
Workshops can typically focus on topics aligned to or specified in
general call for contributions but may not be restricted to those. The
topics cover all aspects of theoretical and applied aspects of Active
Media Technology including, but not limited to
- foundations of active media,
- ubiquitous intelligence and ubiquitous services,
- big data management for active media,
- data maining for active media,
- social network and social media,
- interactive systems and intelligent interfaces,
- active media engineering,
- active media applications.
Workshops may be full-day or half-day. A full-day workshop should select
10-14 regular papers, while a half-day workshop should select 5-7
regular papers, from a large number of submissions. Papers accepted for
AMT workshops will be published in the same volumes of LNCS/LNAI
proceedings as regular papers accepted for AMT 2014. Workshop papers
should be restricted to 10 pages.
============== WORKSHOP PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS ========================
Workshop organizers should submit their proposals via the link
http://wic2014.mimuw.edu.pl/submit-proposal-wic-2014-event provided at
the home-page of the Web Intelligence Congress. All Workshop proposals
should include the following elements:
- Title of the workshop;
- Names of workshop organizers, affiliation, mailing address and e-mail
address;
- Short CV of organizers;
- A description of the topics of the workshop (not exceeding 200 words);
- Type of the workshop (full-day or half-day);
- A description of how the workshop will contribute to the field of
Active Media Technology;
- A short description on how the workshop will be advertised so as to
ensure a sufficiently wide range of authors and high quality papers;
- Information about previous offerings of the proposed workshop;
- A list of potential Program Committee members and
attendees/submissions and/or a justification of the expected attendees
and submissions.
================ WORKSHOP ORGANIZATION ==============================
Organizers, whose proposals are accepted, will be responsible for
advertising the workshop, forming the program committees, reviewing and
selecting the papers, all along guaranteeing high quality worthy of the
prestige and range of the Conference. The Conference will provide an
online paper submission and review system to support the workshops.
After the acceptance of a workshop proposal the organizer(s) should:
- Create a "Call for papers/participation" for the workshop
- Create a Web page for the workshop, the link of which will be
published on the Conference Web site
- Create a Board of Reviewers (Program Committee)
- Review and select papers
- Schedule the workshop program
The workshop organizers should ensure the presence of authors of
accepted papers at the workshops. Optionally, the workshop may be
started or concluded by a panel focusing on interesting aspects,
controversial issues, or unsolved problems to stimulate lively,
thoughtful, and thought-provoking debate; we expect the workshop
organizers to actively engage the audience and help them gain a deeper
understanding of the issues. The goal of a panel is to debate and thus
panels should always reflect more than one point of view.
The papers selected by the workshop organizers will also be reviewed by
the Workshop Chairs for their final acceptance. All submitted papers
will be reviewed on the basis of technical quality, relevance,
significance, and clarity. The workshop organizers will also have the
discretion of editing selected papers (after their expansion and
revision) into books or special journal issues. The acceptance rate for
workshops should follow the guidelines established by the Web
Intelligence Congress Chairs.
======================== REGISTRATION =================================
Workshop paper registration fees are the same as regular conference
fees. All registered participants are entitled to attend all keynotes,
sessions, workshops, panels, tutorials and social events. Workshop
organizers will receive one additional free registration against six
registered papers. Free registration can be used for one (or more) of
organizers or other person(s) approved by the organizers.

Description
Organizations are facing an expanding challenge in managing enterprise
information technology: the consumerization of IT. The arrival of
consumer-oriented devices and applications into the workplace is
re-defining how corporate IT is adopted, delivered, and consumed.
Personal devices such as smartphones and tablets may be brought to the
workplace by employees (called BYOD) or provided by employers for use by
the workforce to help employees in their jobs. Consumer-oriented
applications, often in the cloud (such as Dropbox, Skype, Yammer
LinkedIn, and GoogleDocs), may be used by employees for work-related
activities with or without company sanction. While there is no single,
universally accepted definition of IT consumerization, it can loosely be
defined as the enterprise use of technologies that were originally
designed for the consumer market.
End-users have mastered new digital technologies enough to begin to
assert their independence from the constraints that the IT department
has previously put in place to ensure the compliance, security, and
stability of the corporate IT platform. Although the IT department has
confronted "rogue" or "shadow" IT efforts in the past and dealt with
"End User Computing" in the 1980s and 1990s, the recent technological
advancements and the expanding level of IT literacy are changing the
nature of how corporate IT and users of IT are managed.
While there are numerous industry-oriented articles on the
consumerization of IT, little academic research has appeared. This
dearth of research publications highlights the need for theoretical and
empirical investigation into this topic. The purpose of this minitrack
is to provide a forum for presenting research in this new and important
area.
Suggested Topics
Topics for this mini track include, but are not limited to, the following:
·Managing BYOD and CYOD in the enterprise
·Organizational impact of consumer-oriented devices and applications
·New organizational structures for corporate IT (vs. private IT)
·Competitive advantages enabled by IT consumerization
·Organizational design impacts as private and business boundaries
increasingly blur
·Digital co-creation as end-users have access to increasingly
sophisticated consumer tools
·Behavioral impacts of IT consumerization, for example, impacts on
employee morale and job motivation
·Issues pertaining to inter- and intra-organizational ecosystems (e.g.,
implementing a digital innovation platform with internal and/or external
partners)
·Managing the imbalance between IT supply and demand (e.g., frustrated
users who believe the IT department cannot deliver quickly enough)
·Challenges to security brought on by employees using their own devices
at work
·IT support and IT governance issues brought on by the consumerization
of IT
·Legal issues pertaining to data ownership and terms-of-service liability

*DESCRIPTION:*
With growing integration of corporations, public authorities, non-profit
organizations, project teams, and individuals in cross-organizational,
international and global settings, ICT collaboration is getting
increasingly relevant. Cross-organizational and particularly
international and global collaboration is much more complex than within
one single organization. Critical success factors or challenges of ICT
collaboration in such settings are for example physical locations of
collaborating partners, varying levels of ICT infrastructure, cultural
similarity or differences, legal regulations or the economic
environment. The role of ICT in cross-organizational, international, and
global collaboration is twofold: ICT can be a collaboration enabler, but
also a collaboration purpose and goal. This mini-track focuses on
conceptual and empirical research that contributes to a clearer
understanding of ICT collaboration processes, their challenges, success
factors, and benefits in cross-organizational, international, or global
settings. All methodological approaches, including case studies,
surveys, literature reviews, design science etc. are welcome.
*SUGGESTED TOPICS:*
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
?Processes of ICT collaboration in global development
?Success factors of collaboration technologies
?Inter-organizational, international, or global collaboration and ICT
productivity
?Conceptual frameworks of ICT collaboration in global development
?Multinational teams and ICT productivity
?Cross-organizational, international, or global value-chains and
value-networks
?Standardization of collaborative technologies and/or processes
?ICT productivity studies at the country, industry, firm, or project level
?Comparative cross-country research on ICT collaboration
?Country-specific case studies on cross-organizational collaboration
?ICT offshoring/outsourcing into emerging economies
?International or global ICT project management
?Antecedents of cross-organizational, international, or global
collaboration
?Diffusion of collaborative technologies in emerging economies
?ICT productivity instrument development and validation
