CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on Personalization and Behaviour Change
User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction:
The Journal of Personalization Research (UMUAI)
*** Extended abstract submission deadline: December 1, 2012
*** Paper submission deadline (for accepted abstracts):
April 15, 2013
UMUAI Web site: http://www.umuai.org/
Special Issue Web site:
http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~floriana/UMUAI-PBC/
<http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/%7Efloriana/UMUAI-PBC/>
******************************************************************************
SCOPE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE:
Digital behaviour intervention is a growing area of research
which investigates how interactive systems can encourage and
support people to change their behaviour. Personalization
plays an important role in this, as the most effective
persuasive and motivational strategies are likely to depend
on user characteristics such as the user's personality,
affective state, existing attitudes, behaviours, knowledge,
and goals. Example application areas include health care
(e.g., encouraging people to eat more healthily and exercise
more), education (e.g., motivating learners to study more),
environment (e.g., encouraging people to use less energy
and more public transport), and collaborative content
development (e.g., incentivising people to annotate resources).
Recently, three research areas separately and from different
perspectives have started to focus on personalization and
behavior change, by developing complex cognitive models of
rational and extra-rational features, involving emotions,
persuasion, motivation and argumentation. The first,
stemming from a seminal work by B.J. Fogg (2006), is now
widely known as Persuasive Technology. Persuasive Technology
focuses on interactive technology that can motivate and
influence the user. The second research field is Affective
Computing. Originating from the seminal work by R. Picard
(1997), Affective Computing is interested in the
use, understanding and modelling of emotions and affect in
computer systems. Finally, Argument and Computation (Simari,
Reed, Rahwan & Grasso, 2011) has also emerged in the past
decade as a research strand interested in computational
models and theories of argumentation and persuasion coming
from Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence.
This special issue focuses on how adaptive and personalised
systems can motivate people, for instance to improve health,
or to use sustainable resources, or to achieve goals or
specific skills, by using persuasion and argumentation
techniques and/or techniques involving the affective and
emotional sphere.
The topics of interest for the special issue include (but
are not limited to):
* User models for persuasive and motivational systems (e.g.,
modeling user engagement, personality and affective states,
integrating affective and non-affective aspects)
* Tailored argumentation in persuasive and motivational
systems (e.g., persuasive discourse processing; rhetoric and
affect; computational models of argumentation tailored to a
specific user)
* Theoretical frameworks of personalized persuasive and
motivational systems (e.g., relationships between individual
differences and persuasive strategies)
* Evaluated applications of personalized behaviour change
and motivational strategies(e.g., in intelligent tutoring,
health promotion, sustainable transport, sustainable energy,
collaborative content development)
* Ethical issues of personalized digital behaviour interventions
* User-centred design and evaluation methodologies of
personalized digital behaviour interventions
PAPER SUBMISSION & REVIEW PROCESS
Prospective authors must first submit an extended abstract
(no more than 4 single-spaced pages, formatted with 12pt
font and 1 inch margins) via EasyChair
(https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=umuaipbc2013)
to the special issue editors.
All submitted abstracts will receive an initial screening by
the special issue editors. Abstracts that do not pass this
initial screening (i.e., the abstracts that are deemed not
to have a reasonable chance of acceptance) will not be
considered further. The authors of abstracts that pass the
initial screening will be invited to submit the full version
of the paper.
Formatting guidelines and submission instructions for full
papers can be found

UMUAI is an archival journal that publishes mature and
substantial research results on the (dynamic) adaptation of
computer systems to their human users, and the role that a
model of the system about the user plays in this context.
Many articles in UMUAI are quite comprehensive and describe
the results of several years of work. Consequently, UMUAI
gives "unlimited" space to authors (as long as what they
write is important). Authors whose paper exceeds 40 pages in
journal format (including illustrations and references) are
however requested to supply a short justification upon
submission that explains why a briefer discussion of their
research results would not be advisable.
Full papers should be submitted through EasyChair
(https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=umuaipbc2013).
IMPORTANT DATES:
- Submission of Title and Abstract: Dec 1st, 2012

HICSS-46 (2013) CALL FOR PAPERS
Minitrack: Social Media and Data Analytics
Track: DIGITAL MEDIA: CONTENT AND COMMUNICATION
Submission deadline: June 15, 2012
Conference Site: Grand Wailea Maui
Dates: January 7 - 10, 2013
Additional details about the Minitrack may be found at:
http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_46/socialmedia.pdf
Social media is changing how we work and play. It is also
changing the way we access and consume media, stay in touch
with family and friends, as well as how we communicate with
government and businesses. This mini-track focuses on
research that brings together social media (or
social networks) and data analytics. For example, research
and practice that advances the state-of-the-art in the
acquisition, management, and analysis of data originating
primarily from social phenomena.
We welcome both theoretical and practical papers whose
approaches are within the scope of data analytics and
closely related areas (e.g., data warehousing, data mining
and business intelligence).
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
? Discovery, Collection, and Extraction of Social Media Data
? Cleaning, Curation and Provenance of Data in Social Networks
? Crowd or Cloud Computation on Social Media Data
? Data Modeling for Social Media
? Analysis of Dynamic Social Networks
? Social Search, Retrieval, and Ranking
? Performance and Scalability of Social Media Data Management
? Semantic Web and Linked Data: Meaning in Networked Connections
? Exploration and Analysis of Massive Social Networks
? Techniques for Meme Tracking
At last year?s HICSS conference, large complex data and
web-scale information problems emerged as common themes
across many of the mini-tracks. In recognition of this, for
HICSS 2013, we encourage authors to address these themes
from their own research perspectives. Authors are encouraged
to bring the lens of their own background and expertise to
focus on big data issues ranging from the analytics of the
data itself, whether from social media or other data sets,
to the design and evaluation of effective presentations for
stakeholders. The process is simple; authors send their
papers to the most relevant mini-track and after the
refereeing, the mini-track chairs will consult to schedule
presentations and draw connections.

Call for Papers
1st International Workshop on Pedagogically--driven Serious Games (PDSG
2012)
Saarbrücken (Germany), 18 September 2012
http://www.cyntelix.com/pdsg2012.aspx
Deadline for submissions: 16-07-12
In conjunction with the
Seventh European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL 2012)
http://ec-tel.eu/
Description
Technology Enhanced Learning is a promising area where Serious Games can
have an impact beyond pure entertainment. Despite this potential, two
issues stand in the way of achieving learning effects:
Few pedagogical theories are sufficiently formalized to allow
implementation, therefore Serious Games seldom fully utilize the
potential of pedagogy.
Even if present, pedagogical principles are implicitly implemented in
the game story, structure, and characters, so that it is very difficult
to test different theories on the same game mechanics. This results in
low reusability and high costs of pedagogically-driven serious games
that hinder their widespread use.
To address these issues, this workshop focuses on:
Formalizations of pedagogical theories potentially capable to drive the
elements in a game's world, such as narrative and characters' behaviour.
Game frameworks based on storytelling, explicit game mechanics and
intelligent agents that can provide a programmable environment to
implement pedagogical formalizations
Expected participants and domains addressed
Participants to the workshop are researchers from the following areas:
Serious games and Technology-Enhanced Learning research in general
Agent technologies (especially in an interactive narrative context).
Efforts in the Agent community such as Pogamut that connect agent
platforms to games like Unreal Tournament can be the ground where these
approaches can be implemented.
Storytelling and Interactive narrative research; narrative engines such
as Brutus, Minstrel and Mexica.
Pedagogy theories/frameworks especially at a stage close to or already
formalized.
Topics
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
Formalizations of pedagogical theories for the purposes of serious games
Game frameworks that provide a programmable environment to implement
pedagogical formalizations, based on any of the following:
Storytelling
explicit game mechanics
intelligent agents
Approaches to modeling the interdependencies between pedagogy,
storytelling and game mechanics in serious games and the translation of
these interdependencies into agent behaviour
Empirical studies addressing the interdependencies between pedagogy,
narrative and storytelling and game mechanics
Architectures for serious games that allow reusability
Existing programmable platforms, such as Pogamut, that connect agent
platforms to games
Approaches to "programmable" narrative and storytelling in serious games
Approaches to "programmable" intelligent agents in serious games
Submissions
We encourage submissions of work that can be at all stages of
development. Contributions are expected in the following form:
Full papers: max. 10 pages
Position/short papers: max. 4 pages
Demo papers: max. 4 pages
Proposals for demonstrations will be evaluated based on submitted demo
papers. The following needs to be specified:
the purpose of the system to be demonstrated and how this is relevant to
the theme of the workshop
the technology used
the duration of the demo (not exceeding 30 minutes)
Important Dates
Submission deadline: Mon 16-07-12
Paper Submission Procedure
Submissions will be handled by EasyChair at:
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=pdsg2012

CALL FOR PAPERS
MEDIA ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE 2012
November 15-17, 2012
Aarhus, Denmark
Building on the successful event in Vienna 2010, Media Architecture
Biennale 2012 brings together artists, practitioners and researchers
from academia and industry in the ongoing exploration of the meeting
between architecture and digital media. The 2012 Biennale comprises an
academic conference track, exhibitions, and industry sessions, as well
as a full day of workshops. Our vision is to provide an excellent
forum for debate and knowledge exchange; to offer a unique opportunity
that brings together the best minds and organizations; and to
highlight state-of-the-art and experimental research in media
architecture.
THEME: PARTICIPATION
The design of media architecture invites encounters between people,
the built environment, and digital media. It opens up rich
opportunities for new forms of participation through dialogue and
engagement. As an emerging field, diverse perspectives are coming
together in media architecture, and the challenges are as abundant as
the opportunities. At the conference, we explore “participation” as a
core value of media architecture. In this context, participation may
occur in the initial design stages of media architecture, e.g. as
different practitioners, stakeholders and potential audiences take
part in shaping future media architecture; it may occur when media
architecture is realized and people experience and interact with it,
e.g. when public spaces and urban environments and the practices they
shape are influenced by elements of media architecture; it may also
occur as new platforms give rise to new opportunities for shaping
systems and surroundings.
TOPICS
We consider media architecture as an inclusive term that encompasses
encounters and intersections between digital technologies and our
physical surroundings. In this respect, we invite papers that present
and discuss novel contributions to media architecture both on a
practical and theoretical level and that further our understanding of
the field through case studies, design approaches, and best practices.
We expect contributions to critically explore a wide range of topics
including, but not limited to:
- Case Studies of Specific Projects
- Future Trends and Prototypes
- Media Facades and Urban Displays
- Interaction Techniques and Interfaces
- Social and Cultural Aspects of Media Architecture
- Historical Perspectives on the Intersection between Media and the
Built Environment
- Design Processes and Methods
- Participatory City Planning and Developing Urban Media Environments
- Participatory Architecture
- Spatial Locative Media
- Development and Design of Content for Specific Contexts
SUBMISSION DETAILS AND DEADLINE
The conference invites research presentations from both academia and
industry. We are currently seeking a publishing agreement with a major
publisher for the academic proceedings. We invite both short and long
papers. Submitted papers should be a maximum of four and ten pages in
length, for short and long papers respectively, in ACM format
(http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates). The
papers should clearly explain the research question addressed,
research methods and tasks, findings or results, and contributions of
the work. Papers should also provide sufficient background and related
work to situate and contextualize the authors’ work within the greater
body of research. Submissions should consist of original work not
previously published or concurrently under consideration for any other
conference, workshop, journal, or other publication with an ISBN, ISSN
or DOI number. Authors must provide a 30-word contribution statement
for their paper upon submission. The contribution statement should
explain the contribution made by the paper to the Media Architecture
community.
Papers will be peer-reviewed by multiple members of a program
committee consisting of experts in a range of disciplines that shape
media architecture.

We are called upon to make our IT systems and work practices
greener (environmentally friendly) and to harness the power
of IT to address the environmental problems facing us. Green
IT is about responding to this call. It is an environmental
imperative, and, as many would advocate, our social
responsibility.
Green IT is a topic of growing relevance and significance
due to an increasing recognition of the harmful effects of
climate change, new stringent environmental legislations,
concerns about electronic waste disposal practices that
damage our environment, and corporate image concerns that
are pushing businesses and individuals to go green. We can
make a difference by advancing green IT and embracing it in
several areas of enterprise and personal activities.
