The novel idea behind this paradigm is to leverage social connections and social intelligence in computer systems and applications in order to devise solutions. These social computing applications/systems gather abundance of social information that when mined and analyzed will further enrich their services or help researchers understand many different things including social dynamics of people, wisdom of crowd, social construction and sharing of knowledge, etc. Novel techniques for information analysis, reuse, and integration are critical to make sense of social information. Systematic approaches, design principles, and evaluation strategies need to be researched for developing effective social computing applications. Other challenges in social computing include accommodating privacy, security, and trust expectations of users. The aim of this workshop is to discuss and exchange ideas on the issues and challenges in social computing systems. We invite research or position papers from researchers and practitioners working in any aspect of social computing. Example topics, but not limited to, include: ? Design, modeling, and simulation of social computing systems ? Reuse/integration of social information/social metadata ? Integration of structured/ unstructured/semi-structured social information ? It is critical to improve both software productivity and quality, which are major challenges to software engineering researchers and practitioners. In recent years, software mining has emerged as a promising means to address these challenges. It has been successfully applied to discover knowledge from software artifacts (e.g., specifications, source code, documentations, execution logs, and bug reports) to improve software quality and development process (e.g., to obtain the insights for the causes leading to poor software quality, to help software engineers locate and identify problems quickly, and to help the managers optimize the resources for better productivity). Software mining has attracted much attention in both software engineering and data mining communities. The first International Workshop on Software Mining aims to bridge research in the data mining community and software engineering community by providing an open and interactive forum for researchers who are interested in software mining to discuss the methodologies and technical foundations of software mining, approaches and techniques for mining various types of software-related data, applications of data mining to facilitate specialized tasks in software engineering. The participants of diverse background in either data mining or software engineering can benefit from this workshop by sharing their expertise, exchanging ideas and discussing new research results. Authors who are interested in software mining are invited to submit their manuscripts related to all aspects of software mining including software mining foundations, mining specific software data, software mining in specialized tasks, etc. The best submission, according to the evaluations from the PC members, would be granted the "SoftwareMining-2012: Best Paper Award". Topics ------- The first International Workshop on Software Mining (SoftwareMining-2012) calls for research papers reporting original investigation results, real-world applications and system development experience in all aspects of software mining. The RR2012 Doctoral Consortium will provide doctoral students in Web Reasoning and related areas with the unique opportunity to present and discuss their research directions, being involved into state-of-the-art research discussion and being supported in establishing fruitful collaborations with prominent researchers and pioneers the field. Cloud computing resources are offered in one of three levels depending on the needs of the user: software as a service, infrastructure as a service and platform as a service. The computing resources underlying a given cloud computing provider's offering such as Amazon's EC2 or Microsoft's Azure may be distributed on a regional or global level, and to gain flexibility and efficiency, these resources are often shared by many applications and many companies. Cloud-based services are accessed remotely by users via Internet and telecom (voice and SMS) protocols through Web browsers and dedicated applications on devices ranging from mobile phones to game consoles to tablets to personal computers. Flexibility in the cloud computing paradigm provides a logical migration path for various forms of SOA and service models - software, storage, infrastructure, platform etc. and enables new flexibility in the rapid development and scaling of online services. Companies often combine offerings from multiple cloud providers and multiple levels (software, platform and infrastructure) to achieve a much wider range of outcomes than could be achieved using their own computing and information system development capabilities alone. With this flexibility and power comes a broad range of potential issues ranging from technical to organizational to social and thus, cloud computing invites consideration of new models of governance for systems, service and organization. It also invokes legal, national, and social considerations. Cloud computing can help organisations manage risks related to demand, innovation, efficiency, scaling, and control leading them towards a more sustainable future. At the same time, cloud computing is also enabling for a massive proliferation of online services which in turn is paradoxically having negative impact as more computing resource is needed for all of these services. With the rapid growth in cloud computing has come significant interest among the practitioner community with major research activities being conducted in corporate R&D labs. Although the growing levels of integration, multichannel and modalities of the information made available in the current Web, thus including the Social Web bodies of resources, the central role of language in e-mails, blogs, twits as well as multimedia pages cannot be denied. Notice that even for pictures, videos or audio information (including news or artistic materials) natural language is crucial in the annotation, explanation and delivery processes. Unfortunately, the increase in volumes also corresponds to a growing complexity in terms of needs, phenomena and applications. While social media often introduce specific sublanguages that are still largely unexplored by current language processing tools, the pervasive noise and incompleteness that characterize real documents in blogs, forums or SMS channels also amplify requirements such as coverage and robustness of the NLP technology. On the other side, while knowledge representation technologies require massive amount of Web data to be traced, linked and semantically harmonized, this enterprise is tightly bound by the quality of the linguistic interpretation capabilities that the underlying integration systems can exhibit. Finally, the forms of information retrieval, exchange and sharing used commonly by large communities of Social Web users are such that the semantic management of smaller text units is crucially needed. Specific tasks, such as personalized document management or context-aware search in mobile applications are strongly tight to the interpretation of fine-grain phenomena, such as questions, short queries or twits. In these large scale distributed scenarios multilinguality is also an issue for language processing technologies. The above challenges and the topics related to research advances in this area are all central to this special issue. Original research papers as well as surveys of on-going work in specific sectors are welcomed. The aim is to provide to researchers both in the academic and industrial sectors a comprehensive picture of a largely multidisciplinary field. Such datasets are often from various sources (Variety) yet unstructured such as social media, sensors, scientific applications, surveillance, video and image archives, Internet texts and documents, Internet search indexing, medical records, business transactions and web logs;and are of large size (Volume) with fast data in/out (Velocity).
