Title: Challenges in Evaluating Educative Experiences of Flexible and
Personal Learning Environments (E3FPLE)
in conjunction with ECTEL 2011 ((http://www.ec-tel.eu/)
Date: 20th or 21st September 2011 (day to be confirmed by ECTEL organizers)
Place: Palermo, Italy
Website: http://www.mifav.uniroma2.it/inevent/events/E3FPLE/index.php?s=138
Deadline for Paper Submission: 15th July 2011
============================================================================
GOALS& RESEARCH QUESTIONS
E3FPLE aims to offer an interdisciplinary arena to investigate the
complexity that will characterize more and more the evaluation of future
educative experiences (see lso workshop background). The major challenges
are to identify and operationalize relevant qualities of such experiences,
and to model and monitor their trajectories. The overarching goal is to
inform the development of effective supports to enhance educative
experiences of the stakeholders involved.
Accordingly the workshops intends to explore the following research
questions:
· Whether and how the existing evaluation methods from the field of
Technology-enhanced Learning (TEL) and Human-computer
Interaction (HCI) should be extended to address specific requirements of
FPLEs?
· Whether and how compartmentalize the respective impact of software
quality (i.e. interoperability), interaction quality (i.e.
usability and user experience with individual widgets and their
orchestration), information quality (i.e. contents delivered by
widgets and their integration), and personal quality (i.e. individual
goals, value and expertise) on educative experiences?
· Which experiential qualities are relevant to successful educative
processes in FPLEs? Are hedonic qualities such as identification,
stimulation and evocation particularly relevant? Should the learner
experience certain negative emotional responses (e.g. challenge, tension,
bewildered) or, in contrast, positive ones to achieve a stronger learning
effect?
· How should the interplay between experiential evaluation feedback and
redesign of the learning environments be enhanced? In
which ways should the evaluation feedback be collected and presented
(qualitative vs. quantitative; level of granularity; monomodal vs.
multimodal) to the design and development team to improve the uptake of
evaluation results?
In the Workshop, these and other questions arising from the workshop
submissions and discussions will be addressed. Submissions addressing the
above listed and other related questions/ideas are invited.

============
While computing is provided by the cloud and services increasingly pervade
our daily lives, dependability is no longer restricted to mission or safety
critical applications, but rather becomes a cornerstone of the information
society. Unfortunately, heterogeneous, large-scale, and dynamic software
systems that typically run continuously, often tend to become inert,
brittle, and vulnerable after a while. The key problem is that the most
innovative systems and applications are the ones that also suffer most from
a significant decrease in dependability when compared to traditional
critical systems, where dependability and security are fairly well
understood as complementary concepts and a variety of proven methods and
techniques is available today. In accordance with Laprie we call this
effect the dependability gap, which is widened in front of us between
demand and supply of dependability, and we can see this trend further
fueled by the demand for resource awareness (including green computing) and
increasing cost pressure.
Among technical factors of dependability, software development methods,
tools, and techniques contribute to dependability, as defects in software
products and services may lead to failure and also provide typical access
for malicious attacks. In addition, there is a wide variety of fault
tolerance techniques available, including persistence provided by
databases, replication, group communication, transaction monitors, reliable
middleware, cloud infrastructures, and trustworthy service-oriented
architectures with explicit control of quality of service properties.
Furthermore, adaptiveness is envisaged in order to react to observed, or
act upon expected changes of the system itself, the context/environment
(e.g., resource variability or failure/threat scenarios) or users' needs
and expectations. Provided without explicit user intervention, this is also
termed autonomous behavior or self-properties, and often involves
monitoring, diagnosis (analysis, interpretation), and reconfiguration
(repair). In particular, adaptation is also a means to achieve
dependability in a computing infrastructure with dynamically varying
structure and properties.
Topics of interest
==================
* Dependable, Adaptive, and trustworthy Distributed Systems (DADS)
* Architectures, architectural styles, and middleware for DADS
* Protocols for DADS
* Modeling, design, and engineering of DADS
* Foundations and formal methods for DADS
* Applications of DADS
* Evaluations, testing, benchmarking, and case studies of DADS
* Holistic aspects of DADS

PAPER ONE
Understanding User Dissatisfaction: Exploring the Role of Fairness in IT-Enabled Change
Tim Klaus (Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi, USA)
This paper examines the role of fairness and how it shapes a user's view in IT-enabled change. Drawing from several fairness theories, components of fairness are identified and examined in two studies. The first study examines the role of fairness through user interviews and finds that all five components of fairness are considered by users in enterprise system implementations. The second study operationalizes and analyzes the components of fairness through a questionnaire distributed to users. This second study finds that fairness is comprised of all five components that were proposed and a significant relationship exists with user dissatisfaction. The two studies lead to a new theoretical perspective and provide practical implications regarding the role of fairness in IT-enabled change and their strategic implications.

PAPER TWO
Antecedents of Improvisation in IT-Enabled Engineering Work
William J. Doll (The University of Toledo, USA), and Xiaodong Deng (Oakland University, USA)
The success of engineering work depends on the ability of individuals to improvise in response to emerging challenges and opportunities (Kappel& Rubenstein, 1999). Building on experiential learning theory (Eisenhardt& Tabrizi 1995; Kolb, 1984) and improvisation theory (Miner, Bassoff,& Moorman, 2001), this authors argue that information systems facilitate the generation of new product and process design ideas by providing richer feedback, creating shorter learning cycles, and enabling engineers to try a variety of new ideas more easily. An empirical research model of the antecedents of improvisation in IT-enabled engineering work is proposed. This model is examined using a sample of 208 individuals engaged in computer-intensive engineering design work. The multiple regression results suggest that software capability, autonomy, problem solving/decision support usage, system use for work planning, and length of use explain the extent of new product and process ideas that ar!
e generated. The practical and theoretical implications of these findings are discussed.

PAPER THREE
Exploring the Dimensions and Effects of Computer Software Similarities in Computer Skills Transfer
Yuan Li (Columbia College, USA), and Kuo-Chung Chang (Yuan Ze University, Taiwan)
Computer software similarities play important roles in users' skills transfer from one application to another. Despite common software attributes recognized in extant literature, a systematic understanding of the components and structure of software similarities has not been fully developed. To address the issue, a Delphi study was conducted to explore the underlying dimensions of software similarities. Inputs gathered from 20 experienced Information Systems instructors show that Computer Software Similarity is a multi-dimensional construct made up of interface similarity, function similarity, and syntax similarity. Each dimension consists of software attributes that users perceive to be transferable in learning new applications. A field study was carried out to test the impact of the construct. Results from a survey on students' learning two software applications confirm the expectation that Computer Software Similarity facilitates the students' skills transfer between the !
applications. These studies provide a basis to better design training programs for improved training performance.

PAPER FOUR
Preparing IS Students for Real-World Interaction with End Users Through Service Learning: A Proposed Organizational Model
Laura L. Hall (University of Texas at El Paso, USA), and Roy D. Johnson (University of Pretoria, South Africa)
Although teaching the technical skills required of Information Systems (IS) graduates is a straightforward process, it is far more difficult to prepare students in the classroom environment for the challenges they will face interacting with end users in the real world. The ability to establish a successful relationship with end users is a critical success factor for any IS project. One way to prepare students for interaction with end users is through the implementation of service learning projects. Service learning projects provide a rich environment for students to experience real world interactions with users. This paper presents an organizational model to guide the implementation of service learning projects in IS curriculums. Service learning projects better prepare students to assume important management positions by giving them experience in applying the system development life cycle to an IS project and working with people. This organizational model uses the system de!
velopment life cycle approach to integrate typical curriculum and service learning models. The organizational model is grounded in anecdotal evidence from prior experiences with IS students in service learning environments.

PAPER FIVE
The Role of Computer Attitudes in Enhancing Computer Competence in Training
James P. Downey (University of Central Arkansas, USA), and Lloyd A. Smith (Missouri State University, USA)
Computer competence is poorly conceptualized and inconsistently measured. This study clarifies computer competence and examines its relationship with anxiety, affect, and pessimism, along with self-efficacy and previous experience. Using a survey of 610 end users, the strengths of anxiety, affect (positive), pessimism, self-efficacy, and previous experience were compared for nine different competency measures in seven different domains, including word processing, email applications, spreadsheets, graphic programs, databases, web design, and overall computing. Results suggest that for most domains, affect and anxiety are significant predictors, as are self-efficacy and previous experience, but pessimism is not. In addition, competence in a domain was found to mediate the relationship between competence and its antecedents. These results suggest that organizations focus not only on skills training, but on ways to enhance computing attitudes during the training process.

Background
==========
Design Science creates and evaluates IT artifacts intended to solve
identified organizational problems. Such artifacts are represented in a
structured form that may vary from software, formal logic, and rigorous
mathematics to informal natural language descriptions. Design Science
Research (DSR) has become an accepted approach for research in the
Information Systems discipline with a dramatic growth in recent, related
literature. In particular, DSR holds promise as a paradigm that can
establish the relevance of academic information systems research for IS
practice. The rich phenomena that emerge from the interaction of people,
organizations, and technology needs to be qualitatively assessed to
yield an understanding of the phenomena adequate for theory development
or problem solving.
We invite contributions that describe research results and address DSR
issues related to IT management and information systems. In-line with
the aim of this annual symposium we especially encourage contributions
that highlight the challenges and benefits of collaboration between
academia and practice.
Contributions from industry, academia and collaborative research are
welcome. We also encourage postgraduate researchers to submit their work.

Unternehmenskommunikation" MKWI 2012

Einladung zur Einreichung von Beiträgen
Teilkonferenz "IKT-gestützte Unternehmenskommunikation" im
Rahmen der Multikonferenz Wirtschaftsinformatik (MKWI) 2012
_
__http://mkwi2012.de/_
29.02. - 02.03.2012 an der Technischen Universität Braunschweig
Inhalt:
engagierten Mitarbeitern, aufgeschlossenen Kunden,
zuverlässigen Lieferanten, finanzkräftigen Investoren sowie
kooperativen Behörden, fairen Journalisten und
unvoreingenommenen Rating-Agenturen.
Insbesondere
durchdringt sie Organisationsstrukturen und
Geschäftsprozesse sowie die ökonomischen Aktivitäten in
Wertschöpfungsketten auf den verschiedenen Märkten und in
vielschichtigen sozio-politischen Beziehungen. Die
Gestaltungschancen der Internettechnologien und der dadurch
verfügbaren -dienste verändern insgesamt die
organisatorische Landschaft.
Im Zeitalter der Internet-Ökonomie und des E-Business
erlangt die Gestaltungsaufgabe eines stimmigen Bildes des
Unternehmens nach Innen und Außen unternehmenspolitische
Relevanz sowie wettbewerbsstrategische Bedeutung und wird
damit zur Führungsaufgabe. Informatisierung, Automatisierung
und Personalisierung entwickeln sich zu Leitvorstellungen in
der Unternehmenskommunikation, nicht nur aus Sicht der
Wirtschaftsinformatik. Die aktuellen Entwicklungen in der
Unternehmenskommunikation weisen neben anderen Tendenzen in
Wissensmanagement, Organizational Memory)
Einbindung in das M- bzw. E-Business und organisatorische
Verankerung (z.B. Mobile Communications, Electronic
Communications, E-Organisation)
Einsatz von Web-2.0-Technologien zur
Unternehmenskommunikation (z.B. RSS, Social Bookmarking,
Wikis, Blogs)
Theoretische Aspekte (z.B. Benutzermodellierung,
Geschäftsprozessgestaltung, Document Engineering, Software
Engineering)
IKT-Systeme und Software-Werkzeuge zur Unterstützung der
Unternehmenskommunikation
Wirtschaftlichkeit und Kosten/Nutzen-Analysen der
IKT-unterstützten Kommunikation

29.02. - 02.03.2012 an der Technischen Universität Braunschweig
Inhalt:
Energie- bzw. Ressourcenbedarfs im
Leistungserstellungsprozess in das Blickfeld interner und
externer Stakeholder (nachhaltiges IT-Management). Das in
der Praxis diskutierte “Green IT” liefert hierzu erste
Ansätze. Andererseits kann die IKT durch die informatorische
Absicherung unternehmerischer Entscheidungen (z. B.
Betriebliche Umweltinformationssysteme) unterstützen und
somit die Realisierung von Optimierungspotentialen im
Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement ermöglichen (IT for Green).
