=========================================================================
Special Issue On: IT goes Green: Systemic Approaches to IT Policy Making,
Design, Evaluation and Management
Guest Editor: Dr. José-Rodrigo Córdoba Pachón, Royal Holloway, University
of London
=========================================================================
Introduction
Economic recession, global environmental concerns and availability of
mobile technologies among other factors have contributed to the emergence
of alternative computing infrastructures, products and service that
promise individuals and organizations cleaner and more responsible
information processing. A scheme that is now being popularized and put
forward by technology providers is that of ?cloud? computing, which could
help organizations reduce their operation and capital expenses whilst
giving flexibility to consumers and end users. The benefits of this and
other schemes are yet to be realized in particular regarding their
environmental impacts within and beyond data processing facilities.
Concerns about availability of energy to fuel computing platforms, mobile
devices, offices or households still remain. Technology providers are
competing to provide sophisticated devices and services whilst trying to
balance their production and recycling processes with their carbon
footprints. There are opportunities and challenges lying ahead for
technology designers, managers and users in taking environmental and green
concerns forward.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Objective of the Special Issue
This special issue aims to facilitate debate and contributions on how the
systems approach in its various forms and applications can help addressing
issues of design, service use and implementation of computing
infrastructures and facilities that emerge when environmental requirements
are to be met. We intend to gather theoretical and practical
contributions from academics practitioners, policy makers or planners who
can provide systemic accounts of how technology can better conceived of or
positioned in the wider societal and environmental spheres.
Recommended Topics
Topics to be discussed in this special issue include (but are not limited
to) the following:
?Cloud computing, private or public clouds, mobile clouds
?Conceptualisations of relationships between regulation, production and
reuse of information technologies
?Design of ?green? devices, computing platforms or computing infrastructures
?Evaluation of environmental impacts of information systems
?Green IT curriculum

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on
Context-Adaptive Collaboration Support for Knowledge-intense Work
User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction:
The Journal of Personalization Research
(An international journal published by Springer Verlag)
Web site: http://www.umuai.org/
=================================================================
Knowledge work in modern organizations is to a large extent collaborative.
Free riding, dominance, group think, hidden agendas, and especially
ill-structured tasks that emerge in the course of the collaborative process
are but a few phenomena in group work that make it a non straight-forward
effort. Users participating in a collaborative project may find themselves
in different physical environments or settings and may use a variety of
different devices. Also, users are often involved in more than one project
at a time, raising the need for frequent task or tool switches and for
rapid
cognitive adjustments to the subject at hand. For a successful
collaboration, these challenges need to be addressed.
A promising approach to solving these challenges are collaboration support
systems that can flexibly adapt themselves to the context of knowledge
workers. Context can here be understood in the widest sense: it comprises
external factors such as location, device used or time, but also factors
derived from the user¹s interaction behavior such as interest profiles or
tasks the user is engaged in. Considering both external (exogenous) and
interaction-based (endogenous) factors creates an interesting intersection
between conventional, sensor-based context-adaption and adaptation based on
user models.
The proposed special issue aims at attracting use-oriented contributions
that discuss models, methods, techniques and empirical studies related to
collaborative context in this wide sense as well as to adaptation
techniques
for collaboration environments. Furthermore, we aim to discuss resulting
implications regarding the technical design of interfaces as well as soft-
and hardware architectures. Special attention is given to context modeling
and implementation of the various application scenarios as well as to the
issues related to manual (adaptability) or automatic (adaptivity)
in-use-adjustment.
We would like to invite in particular researchers and practitioners to
contributions dealing with the following questions:
- What practical experiences - positive as well as negative - have been
made
with regard to the usage of context-adaptive computing and collaboration in
real organizational settings? What experiences have been made with
adaptation mechanisms (automatic as well as interactive) of such systems in
these settings?
- What are different forms of adaptations for groups? How can this design
space be structured?
- How can relations between context descriptions/models, context sensors
and
context-based services be described in a way that they can be understood
and
used by end users? What framing conditions apply for interfaces that aim to
achieve this?
- What are suitable models for context management? How can context concepts
be represented and retrieved? How can privacy issues be dealt with?
- How can individual contexts dynamically aggregated into group context?
- How can context architectures be effectively designed for sustainable
usages (context evolution, context adaptation, traceability for end-users)?
- What are appropriate architectures for context-adaptive collaboration
support systems? How can such architectures be designed to support context
evolution, context adaptation, and traceability for end-users?
HOW TO SUBMIT
Submissions to the special issue should follow the UMUAI formatting
guidelines and submission instructions available at:
http://www.umuai.org/paper_submission.html
Each submission should note that it is intended for the Special Issue on
Context-Adaptive Collaboration Support for Knowledge-intense Work.
Potential authors are asked to submit a tentative title and short abstract
(which can be altered for the actual submission) to assist in the formation
of a panel of appropriate reviewers.
UMUAI is an archival journal that publishes mature and substantiated
research results on the (dynamic) adaptation of computer systems to their
human users, and the role that a model of the system about the user plays
in
this context. Many articles in UMUAI are quite comprehensive and describe
the results of several years of work. Consequently, UMUAI gives "unlimited"
space to authors (so long as what they write is important). Authors whose
paper exceeds 40 pages in journal format (including illustrations and
references) are however requested to supply a short justification upon
submission that explains why a briefer discussion of their research results
would not be advisable.
IMPORTANT DATES
Notification of tentative intent to submit: as soon as possible
Title and abstract submission deadline: February 28, 2011
Paper submission deadline: March 31, 2011
REVIEW PROCESS
Submissions will undergo the normal review process, and will be reviewed by
three established researchers selected from a panel of reviewers formed for
the special issue. Barring unforeseen problems, authors can expect to be
notified regarding the review results within three months of submission.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue
SUBMISSION DUE DATE: March 1, 2011
SPECIAL ISSUE ON: Human-Technology Interaction in Civil Aviation
Guest Editors:
Paola Amaldi, Middlesex University, UK
José Abdelnour Nocera, Thames Valley University, UK Simone
Rozzi, Middlesex University, UK
INTRODUCTION:
The impact of the Information Technology (IT) innovation
process on human performance in Civil Aviation has attracted
over the years an amazing wealth of research addressing
issues relevant to several areas of research like Human
Factors, Cognitive engineering, Cognitive ergonomics,
Computer Supported Cooperative Work. This wealth of research
has addressed not only issues of "cognition in the wild" but
also issues of interaction design and human-system
interaction, strengthening, for example the view that
"users" must be in the design loop since its early phases.
OBJECTIVE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE:
This call intends to be an opportunity to explore not only
the role of "front end users" in shaping the design and
ultimately the interaction with technology but also the role
of those who are not immediately involved in the "human
computer interaction" loop. Technological upgrade in Civil
Aviation does not coincide with the design process only but
it is rather shaped, for example, by values and priorities
embedded in plans and decisions at various Institutional and
Societal layers (like Air Traffic Control Centers, National
Civil Aviation, Safety Agencies). How are these higher order
elements shaping the artifact-design cycle and ultimately
human technology interaction? Further Civil Aviation is not
only a complex and highly distributed work system but also
managed by different sorts of organizations, from private
local companies to international organizations. In this
context, human-technology interaction is never a concern of
a few individuals, but it has far reaching consequences
through organizational layers.
RECOMMENDED TOPICS:
We invite submission of papers that while taking into
account human-technology interactions in the domain of Civil
Aviation, seek to link them to higher order
organizational/societal conditions and/or relate them to
inter-communities interactions. By "human technology
interactions" we include broad areas like but not limited to
the following:
Adaptive use of the technology reflecting institutional
decision making and biases Decision making heuristics and
biases in human-technology interaction Impact of newly
introduced IT on the work system including collaborative and
coordinative requirements Making explicit views and
(conflicting) expectations by different communities about
use of the technology Organisational pressure hampering the
design cycle of interactive systems Typical forms of "human
error" in relation to human IT interaction
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit papers
for this special theme issue on Human Technology Interaction
in Civil Aviation on or before February 1, 2011. All
submissions must be original and may not be under review by
another publication. INTERESTED AUTHORS SHOULD CONSULT THE

Special Issue on Interoperability for the Energy Sector
Guest Editor: Sebastian Lehnhoff
From a technical point of view, the increasing amount of
renewables and distributed generation is imposing novel
problems on the existing energy distribution grid and its
communication infrastructure. The paradigm of power
generation following the demand that has been well
established over the last century has to change. With
unpredictable generation and subsequent fluctuating power
feed-in to the grid by solar and wind power plants, it
becomes necessary for the demand side to adjust itself to
the overall energy generation in order to ensure a stable
and reliable power supply under increasingly stochastic
demand and supply situations.
New technologies like smart meters, home automation and
demand side management through web 2.0 technologies are
expected to be the major cornerstones for addressing issues
like controlling electric vehicles or micro-CHPs which in
general are more predictable than stochastic generation.
Charging and de-charging of EVs may become of interest to
provide significant distributed storage capacities. Yet,
this may only be achieved through integrating even more ICT
technology into the grid to make it smarter and to increase
the overall level of automation. One of the key issues
identified by smart grid roadmaps all around the world are
standards and interoperability issues connected with this
development. This issue of the IBIS magazine aims at
outlining important solutions and applications of improving
the integration of ICT between different systems of the grid.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Coordination mechanisms for automated ICT-systems
* Integration of electric vehicles
* Demand side management processes and their
integration into energy management systems
* Coordination of distributed generation through means
of interoperable systems
* Real-time process communication in smart grids
* Communication and Data requirements for safety
critical real-time communication in future smart grids
* Standardization issues

CALL FOR PAPERS - WikiSym 2011 - 7th International Symposium on
Wikis and Open Collaboration
October 3-5, 2011 | Mountain View, California
http://www.wikisym.org/ws2011
The International Symposium on Wikis and Open Collaboration (WikiSym) is
the premier conference on open collaboration and related technologies.
In 2011, WikiSym celebrates its 7th year of scholarly, technical and
community innovation in Mountain View, California at the Microsoft
Research Campus in Silicon Valley.
Submissions are invited for the following categories, further details
are available on the conference website:
http://www.wikisym.org/ws2011/submitting:start
* Research Papers, Panels, Workshop: April 1
* Posters, Demos: May 13
* Notification of Acceptance: June 17
The conference program will include a peer-reviewed research track, as
well as workshops, a doctoral consortium, invited keynotes and panel
speakers. Evening social events will follow, because wiki folks know the
value of a good party for sparking conversation and collaboration. As
always, Open Space, a participant-organized track will also run
throughout the conference. Many of the most innovative technology
companies in the world have a presence in Mountain View, which makes it
an ideal venue for hatching new ideas and thoughtful debate about
collaborative computing among technologists, researchers, educators, and
activists.
Topics appropriate for research submissions include all aspects of the
people, tools, contexts, and content that comprise open collaboration
systems. For example:
* Collaboration tools and processes
* Social and cultural aspects of collaboration
* Collaboration beyond text: images, video, sound, etc.
* Communities and workgroups
* Knowledge and information production
* New media literacies
* Uses and impact of wikis and open resources in specific fields, such
as
- Education/Open Educational Resources
- Law/Intellectual Property

*CFP: Special Issue on Service Management & Engineering:
Aligning Business & IT Services*
*The Journal of Strategic Information Systems*
http://www.elsevier.com/locate/jsis
IMPORTANT DATES
Submission deadline: /1^st of March 2011/
Target publication date of special issue: /3^rd quarter of 2011/
MOTIVATION AND SUGGESTED TOPICS
An increasing number of activities of public and private
organizations are engineered and managed as services, often
creating a new potential for economic growth and welfare
through innovation and productivity gains. In addition to
the increasing importance of the service perspective in the
business domain, the service concept has also become very
prominent in the IT domain. This is evident in developments
like IT Service Management, Service-Oriented Architectures
(SOA), Service Computing, and various “XYZ-as-a-Service”
concepts. While this increasingly blurs the line between a
business view and an IT view of services, these concepts
generally have different meanings and refer to different
domains. Thus, there is a need for understanding how these
two service worlds meet and how they change the alignment of
business needs and IT capabilities.
This special issue seeks contributions that demonstrate how
the IS discipline and related management disciplines can
make an impact to improve the way organizations face the
challenges of the progressing service-oriented economy that
increasingly merges business- and IT-related service
concepts. Possible contributions may include, but are not
limited to the following:
Service Management from an IS Perspective:
·Service management
·Service strategy management
·Service value management
·Service quality management
·Service innovation management
·Service governance
·Service portfolio management
·Service capability management
·Service performance management
·Service compliance and risk management
·Service supplier & customer management
·Services supply chain management
·Services sourcing
Service Engineering from an IS Perspective:
·Service lifecycle
·New service development
·Service analysis
·Service design
·Service bundling
·Service standards
·Service descriptions
·Service modeling
Special topics on Information Systems and Services:
·The position of IS in Service Science, Management and
Engineering
·IS contributions to Service Science
·New business models for IS services, e.g. for service
aggregation and brokerage
·IS/IT services from a service(-dominant) logic
·The role of IT services in IT-enabled value co-creation
·Implications of value co-creation for IT-based services
·Service business alignment / Aligning Business and IT
Service Management
·Business impact of IT service management
·Management of IT-enabled service ecosystems
·Servitization of IT and other industries
·Embedding of IT services in business products and services
·Design and Implementation and effects of automation and
self-service technologies for IT services
·Services E-commerce (i.e. electronic offering, trading, and
purchasing of services)
