peer-reviewed research and position paper presentations and a discussion
panel including Barry Wellman (University of Toronto), Marti Hearst
(University of California, Berkeley) and Ed Chi (Palo Alto Research Center).
Submissions:
We solicit position papers (2 pages), demonstration and short research
papers (4 pages) as well as full research papers (8 pages) in ACM SIG
proceedings format. Information about the submission system will be
released on the workshop website soon.
Workshop Overview:
In recent years, social media applications such as blogs, microblogs,
wikis, news aggregation sites and social tagging systems have pervaded
the web and have transformed the way people communicate and interact
with each other online. In order to understand and effectively design
social media systems, we need to develop models that are capable of
reflecting their complex, multi-faceted socio-technological nature.
While progress has been made in modeling particular aspects of selected
social media applications (such as the architecture of weblog
conversations, the evolution of wikipedia, or the mechanics of news
propagation), other aspects are less understood.
Topics may include, but are not limited to:
+ new modeling techniques and approaches for social media
+ models of propagation and influence in twitter, blogs and social
tagging systems
+ models of expertise and trust in twitter, wikis, newsgroups, question
and answering systems
+ modeling of social phenomena and emergent social behavior
+ agent-based models of social media
+ models of emergent social media properties
+ models of user motivation, intent and goals in social media
+ cooperation and collaboration models
+ software-engineering and requirements models for social media
+ adapting and adaptive hypertext models for social media
+ modeling social media users and their motivations and goals
+ architectural and framework models
+ user modeling and behavioural models
+ modeling the evolution and dynamics of social media
Objectives and Goals:
The goal of this workshop is to focus the attention of researchers on
the increasingly important role of modeling social media. The workshop
aims to attract and discuss a wide range of modeling perspectives (such
as justificative, explanative, descriptive, formative, predictive, etc
models) and approaches (statistical modeling, conceptual modeling,
temporal modeling, etc). We want to bring together researchers and
practitioners with diverse backgrounds interested in 1) exploring
different perspectives and approaches to modeling complex social media
phenomena and systems, 2) the different purposes and applications that
models of social media can serve, 3) issues of integrating and
validating social media models and 4) new modeling techniques for social
media.
The workshop reflects on the emerging phenomenon "social media" that
includes social and real-time applications such as blogs, wikis,
microblogs, instant messaging, discussion groups, chats, social
networks, photo sites, etc. Our current understanding of social media is
hampered by different formats, the dynamic nature of social media, and a
plethora of approaches to modeling and understanding social media. This
workshop aims to start a dialogue aiming to reflect upon and discuss
these issues.
This workshop is intended as a tool to build a community of researchers
sharing an interest in modeling and to start a dialogue on modeling
social media.
Workshop Attendees:
Participants who do research or have an interest in theoretical and
practical models for social media.

AIMS AND SCOPE
++++++++++++++
Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) is a computing paradigm that utilizes
Web services as the
basic constructs to support the development of rapid, low-cost and easy
composition of
distributed applications even in heterogeneous environments. With the
advent of SOC,
computing environments have become open, and components are no longer
under a single
organization’s control. Consequently, Web services based applications
are becoming difficult
to adapt. Moreover, with the rapid growth of communication and
information technologies,
adaptation has gained a significant attention as it becomes a key
feature of Web services
allowing them to operate and evolve in highly dynamic environments.
Adaptation mechanisms
refer to different instantiations including configuration, healing,
optimization, and protection.
The primary objective of this workshop is to investigate ideas that may
contribute to the
adaptation of Web services. Theoretical as well as practical aspects are
welcome. The workshop
organizers welcome participation and contributions from those working or
interested in the
intersection of technologies such as agent technology and autonomic
computing with SOC.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
++++++++++++++++++
The topics of interest for AWS’2010 include, but are not limited to:
* Adaptation solutions to Web services
* Applications of adaptive Web services
* Optimization of Web services
* Configuration of Web services
* Healing of Web services
* Protection of Web Services
* Self-* Web services
* Agents vs. Web services
* Agents for Web services
* Design and management of self-* Web services.</font>
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE and FORMATTING GUIDELINES
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Authors should submit their contributions electronically in PDF format
by using the WI-IAT CyberChair system
http://wi-consortium.org/cyberchair/wiiat10/scripts/ws_submit.php by the

/*/*****All that Glitters Is Not Gold: Employee Retention in
Offshored/*/* //Indian Information Technology Services//*
Mohan Thite -- Griffith University, Australia
*Abstract: *
Increasing offshoring of customer contact services to destinations such
as India is underpinned by the availability of low cost and high quality
workforce. But this competitive advantage is under threat with talent
shortages, wage increases, and, most importantly, high employee
attrition. Based on empirical studies and person-organization fit
literature, this paper identifies and addresses some of the key issues
and challenges in retaining talent in the Indian business process
outsourcing sector, such as pay satisfaction, work organization,
employment branding, and longer-term career advancement opportunities.
It recognizes the need for multi-pronged retention strategies in a
highly competitive, changing, and fast-growing part of the global
services sector.

*Abstract*
Agency theory is proposed as a framework for explaining the design of IT
jobs and career paths. To support this theory, data about knowledge,
skills, and abilities (KSAs) were gathered and analyzed from Fortune 500
job listings for the Programmer/Analyst → Systems Analyst → IT Manager
career path. The results indicate that agency theory has significant
predictive power over the type and importance of IT KSAs for job
sequences along IT career paths. The results have implications for both
researchers who are looking for theories that explain IT job design and
career path development and managers who are challenged with decisions
about how to design IT jobs and manage IT career paths.

Determinants of Turnover Intentions in Korea /

*Abstract*
Management of IS employees' turnover has been one of the important areas
of research in the IS discipline. Prior IS studies have focused on
personality factors that differentiate IS personnel from non-IS
personnel. Unlike prior studies, this study examines job contextual
factors that may be salient in IS personnel turnover. Seven variables
that have been frequently employed as determinants of turnover intention
in prior studies were compared across different job contexts. These
seven variables are role conflict, role ambiguity, job alternatives,
interpersonal conflict with colleagues within a team, interpersonal
conflict with colleagues outside a team, burnout, and career plateau. A
total of 209 responses obtained from employees in different job contexts
were analyzed. Interestingly, the results reveal that IS and non-IS
personnel have statistically similar levels of perceptions on these
variables. In addition, we investigated differences between the
behavioral models of turnover intention for IS and non-IS personnel. The
results indicate that role conflict and interpersonal conflict with
colleagues outside a team have a higher influence on turnover intention
for IS personnel compared to non-IS personnel. Based on the results, the
paper discusses the implications of the findings and provides directions
for future research.

*Abstract*
Public sector information technology (IT) departments are facing a
myriad of challenges (e.g., budget cuts, service expansions, and
political turmoil) in addition to the constant and rapid technological
changes facing private sector firms. One way to meet these challenges
may be through the development of the organization's absorptive
capacity. Absorptive capacity refers to an organization's ability to
recognize the value of new information, assimilate it, and use it to
address organizational challenges associated with external change [6].
Few researchers have focused on absorptive capacity in public sector
organizations. The purpose of this research is to ascertain how state IT
departments, specifically Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and IT
managers, view their external environment and their departments' ability
to absorb new information.
The findings are derived from a national survey of state IT departments
in the United States and indicate that for CIOs and IT managers the
external environment and organizational culture are significant in
predicting potential absorptive capacity. These variables are
significant for the IT managers as a group, but for the CIOs as a group,
only external environment is significant. These findings may be used by
state IT management to increase the organization's ability to be aware
of, identify, and take effective advantage of new knowledge and
innovative technologies.

/*/*****/*/ /A Study of Work-Family Conflict among IT Professionals:
Job Characteristics, Individual Values, and Management Practices/
Michael Dinger -- Clemson University
Jason Bennett Thatcher -- Clemson University
Lee P. Stepina -- Florida State University
*Abstract*
In this study, we develop a model that explains the work-family conflict
experienced by IT professionals. We propose two major sources of
work-family conflict: the structure of work and individual mindsets
toward work. Furthermore, we examine beliefs about the employer that can
diminish work-family conflict. We test our hypotheses using data
gathered from 126 IT professionals. Our model explains more than 45% of
the variance in work-family conflict. Our findings suggest: (1) skill
variety requirements increase work-family conflict, (2) work ethic
positively relates to work-family conflict, (3) leisure ethic negatively
relates to work-family conflict, and (4) professionalism has mixed
effects on work-family conflict. Finally, we found that when IT
professionals perceive high levels of job security and are satisfied
with supervision, work-family conflict diminishes. The study concludes
with implications for research and practice.

*Incentives and Motivation for Web-Based Collaboration (Webcentives)*
http://www.disa.unitn.it/net-economy/WEBCENTIVES/index.htm
Social Web and Semantic Web applications are based on large-scale user
participation. Open Source Software projects (OSS), gaming and other
online communities are constituted by voluntary engagement of
contributors, almost self-organized and self-managed. Also large-scale
intranet applications of business companies and non-governmental
organizations are increasingly relying on Social/Semantic Web
technologies and community-building.
The workshop focuses on motivation structures of users to participate in
(online) communities and to contribute to collaborative content
creation: What kind of motivation mechanisms, incentives or rewards are
appropriate to increase the (extrinsic) motivation of users to
contribute to online communities? What kind of community-support tools
are successfully designed for fun or motivation for participation?
Contributions to this workshop can include (but are not limited to):
* · psychological and/or economical studies on motivation and
incentives for web-based collaboration
* · ethnographic case studies on participation in online communities
* · incentives and reward mechanisms in online communities
* · studies on web-based community-building
* · theoretical approaches related to motivation and participation
in online communities
* · sociability (design) requirements for community tools and
applications
* · design studies of community platforms
* · prototypes, demonstrators, show cases of community-support or
web-based collaboration tools
* · asf.
/Workshop Design/
Full day workshop on May, 18, 2010 in Aix-en-Provence, France.
Workshop participants will be given the opportunity to present a
