The Intellectual Advancement of Human-Computer Interaction Research: A
Critical Assessment of the MIS Literature (1990-2008)
By Ping Zhang, Na Li, Michael Scialdone, and Jane Carey
This paper assesses the intellectual advancement of Human-Computer
Interaction (HCI) scholarship as one of the five research streams of the
Management Information Systems (MIS) discipline. It particularly
demonstrates the vitality and maturity that the HCI stream (or
sub-discipline) has achieved in recent years, and adds to the few studies
that draw an overarching picture of HCI. This study uses the same approach
as that of Zhang and Li (2005), and delineates the intellectual
development of HCI research in MIS by employing a multifaceted assessment
of the published HCI articles over a period of 19 years (1990-2008) in
eight primary MIS journals. In addition, this study includes several
journal special issues and two book collections in the assessment.
Twenty-four specific questions are addressed to answer the following five
mega-research questions about the HCI sub-discipline: (1) What constitutes
HCIs intellectual substance? (2) What relationships does HCI have with
other disciplines? (3) How is HCI evolving? (4) What are the patterns of
HCI publication in the primary MIS journals? And, (5) Who are the
contributing scholars? A number of areas for future research are
predicted, along with a discussion of potential future directions for the
sub-discipline. This study is of interest to researchers in the HCI
sub-discipline, the MIS discipline, and other related disciplines to
inform future research, collaboration, publication, and education. It
should also be of interest to doctoral students for identifying potential
topics for dissertation research and to identify academic institutions for
future employment where such research is understood, appreciated, and
encouraged.

SPECIAL ISSUE SCOPE
Due to the dynamic economy of the changing global market, enterprises
and their organizations need to be more agile, adaptive, transparent,
and capable of change and adaptation. In order to support business
innovation, enterprises and their organizations need to be
systematically analyzed, designed and engineered. The often-used black-
box knowledge (focus on behavior and function) of enterprises and
their organizations might be sufficient and adequate for running the
business, but, to innovate and transform the business, a white-box
approach (focus on construction) is required.
The studying of enterprises and their organizations as artifacts
requires methods to analyze, design and engineer such artifacts. A lot
of work has already been done in the area of enterprise models, i.e.,
defining notations for describing the different aspects of
organizations and the application of these notations. In this special
issue we set the focus on methods defining how to analyze, design and
engineer enterprise / organizational artifacts.
The construction of enterprises and their organizations has been
designated as business engineering, enterprise engineering and
organizational engineering, just to mention a few designations. In
this context, engineering refers to a rather inclusive study
comprising analysis, design and engineering. Regardless of the
specific approach, enterprise and organizational engineering is
complex activities consolidating different views, encompassing
processes and sub-processes scattered within and beyond the enterprise
boundaries, and representing the envisioned artifacts with different
levels of abstraction. This complexity requires innovative and
integrative techniques such as collaborative, participative and
interactive modeling.
SUGGESTED TOPICS
The following topics are suggested in the scope of this special issue
as discussed above:
- Analysis, design and engineering methods for enterprises and their
organizations
- Guidelines for organizational analysis, design and engineering methods
- Frameworks for organizational analysis, design and engineering methods
- Theoretical foundations for organizational analysis, design and
engineering methods
- Evaluation of organizational analysis, design and engineering methods
- Correlation between analysis, design and engineering methods and the
resulting result representation models
- Collaborative, participative and interactive aspects of
organizational analysis, design and engineering
- Collaborative, participative and interactive modeling (CPI Modeling)
- Organizational analysis, design and engineering case studies
- Organizational analysis, design and engineering principles
- Interplay between organizational analysis/design/engineering and
enterprise models/modeling

IUI 2010 Workshop on
Semantic Models for Adaptive Interactive Systems (SEMAIS)
February 7, 2010
Hong Kong, China
Submission deadline: November 15, 2009
http://www.semais.org
========================================================================
Motivation and goals
====================
Semantic technologies and, in particular, ontologies as formal,
shareable representations of a domain of interest play an increasingly
important role also for the design and development of user interfaces
and more generally interactive systems. Semantic models can serve a
number of different purposes in this context. They can be used as
application or interface models in model-driven design and generation of
user interfaces. Semantic Models can also be applied for representing
the various kinds of context information for context-aware and adaptive
systems.
In particular, they have promise to provide a technique for representing
external physical context factors such as location, time or technical
parameters and 'internal' context such as user interest profiles or
interaction context in a consistent, generalized manner. Owing to these
properties, semantic models can also contribute to bridging gaps, e.g.,
between user models, context-aware interfaces and model-driven UI
generation.
There is, therefore, a considerable potential for using semantic models
as a basis for adaptive interactive systems. The range of potential
adaptations is wide comprising, for example, context- and user-dependent
recommendations, interactive assistance when performing
application-specific tasks, adaptation of the application functionality,
or adaptive retrieval support. Furthermore, a variety of reasoning and
machine learning techniques exist, that can be employed to achieve
adaptive system behavior.
Topics of interest
==================
- Representing user models, domain knowledge and interaction context by
means of semantic models
- Cognitively or neurally founded reasoning techniques such as
activation spreading for semantic user models
- Context-aware interaction based on semantic models
- Adaptation strategies and techniques based on semantic models for e.g.
recommender systems, adaptive retrieval, collaboration support systems
and others
- Generating explanations or visualizations to increase user confidence
and support traceability
- Scalability of semantic model-based interactive systems.
- Semantic model-driven UI development
- Generation and evolution of semantic models for interactive systems
- Evaluation approaches for adaptive interaction
Objectives of the Workshop
==========================
The workshop generally aims at sharing experiences and identifying a set
of shared research issues that need to be addressed in future research.
Specifically, we intend to identify and structure approaches and
techniques for ontology-based interaction and adaptation with the aim of
developing a conceptual framework, to identify the potential for
building and sharing ontologies for adaptive UIs and, possibly, to start
an initiative for developing them. Identify evaluation methods and
criteria for semantic model-based interactive systems (shorten)
Submission guidelines
=====================
Prospective participants should submit a 2-page position paper
describing their interests and work in the topic of the workshop and
first comments concerning a list of research issues we will compile and
publish on the workshop website prior to the deadline. We will select
participants based on the abstract's quality and their response to the
list of issues; the diversity of their backgrounds, aiming at an
interdisciplinary group. A list of issues to be discussed at the
workshop will be distributed through the workshop Website. The selected
presenters will be asked to provide an extended 5-page position paper
one month before the workshop. These position papers will be circulated
in advance for participants to get an understanding of the mutual views
and to provide a starting point for the discussion.
Please send your submissions to submissions(a)semais.org
Important Dates:
================
Submission deadline: November 15, 2009
Notification of acceptance: December 14, 2009
Revised, formatted document due: January 7, 2010
Workshop date: February 7, 2010
Plan for dissemination

PAPER ONE
Actor-Network Theory in ICT Research: A Wider Lens of Enquiry
Amany R. Elbanna, Loughborough University, UK
This article examines the properties of ANT in light of other approaches.
It argues that ANT provides a theoretical inclusion of what used to be
considered different poles and that ANT analytically includes a wide array
of actors that used to be considered of different nature and from
different levels of analysis. The study discusses how ANT properties
provide researchers concerned with studying information and communication
technology (ICT) with a non-biased lens to explore the phenomena of
concern. The author invites researchers to reflect on the theoretical and
analytical exclusion that could take place at the start of research and
how a careful application of ANT could avoid it.

PAPER TWO
Linux Kernel Developers Embracing Authors Embracing Licenses
Lars Linden, University of Central Florida, Orlando, USA
Carol Saunders, University of Central Florida, Orlando, USA
In June 2007 with the impending release of a revised version of the GNU
General Public License (GPLv3), Linux kernel developers discussed the
possibility of changing the license of the Linux kernel from being
strictly the GPLv2 to a dual-licensing arrangement of both GPLv2 and
GPLv3. The authors study a set of linux kernel mailing list (LKML)
postings to better understand the relationship among the kernel developers
and these licenses. Using Actor-Network Theory, they identify and describe
a LKML debate about licensing. This article highlights important actor
networks, their interrelationships, and a (failed) process of translation.

PAPER THREE
Crossing the Chasm or Being Crossed Out: The Case of Digital Audio Players
Thierry Rayna, London Metropolitan University, UK
Ludmila Striukova, University College London, UK
Samuel Landau, Samuel Landau, Gostai, France
This article studies the phenomenon of chasm that often exists in the
diffusion of innovation and devises a theoretical framework enabling to
explain the ability of some firms to cross this chasm while many others
remain unsuccessful. The proposition developed in this article is that the
choice of initial market segment has crucial importance as adoption in
this segment can lead to a cascade of adoption in the other segments. The
authors present three cases studies of an historical leader (Sony), a
first mover (Archos), and a newcomer (Apple) in the market for digital
audio players to illustrate this proposition.

PAPER FOUR
Higher Education in Further Education in England: An Actor-Network
Ethnography
Jonathan Tummons, University of Teesside, UK
The provision of higher education courses within further education
colleges in England poses particular questions for the researcher. This
article argues that the complexities of the relationships between colleges
where courses are run and the universities that supply these courses, can
be fruitfully explored using actor-network theory. This article provides
an actor-network account of one teacher-training course as an example of
the ways in which both people and text-based artefacts are coalesced and
coordinated, so that the course functions across institutional and spatial
boundaries.

PAPER FIVE
Exploring Multi-Organizational Interaction Issues: A Case Study of
Information Technology Transfer in the Public Sector of Malaysia
Hasmiah Kasimin, Universiti Kebangsaan, Malaysia
Huda Ibrahim, Universiti Utara, Malaysia
In Malaysia, major information technology transfer in public sector
agencies is usually due to policy implementation. This policy-led
technology transfer involves central government directives to
implementation agencies. The technology transfer process usually not only
involves multi-organizations that consist of many public agencies and
private sector organizations but also involved many phases. Each
organization plays certain roles and contributes to the achievement of the
technology transfer objectives. Each phase serves a different purpose, and
each role during each phase has different requirements. Coordinating and
encouraging multiple organization participation in each phase is complex
and a challenge that may at least result in project delays or
technological decision-making based on non-technical considerations. In
such a case, understanding interactions between stakeholders is important
in designing activities and strategies for effective technology transfer
processes suitable to the local environment.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Mission of IJANTTI:
The mission of the International Journal of Actor-Network Theory and
Technological Innovation (IJANTTI) is to provide a forum for both general
discussion of actor-network theory (ANT), and examples of its use in
offering explanations for socio-technical phenomena, particularly those
related to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). It is over
twenty years now since Latour, Callon, and Law put together their ideas
and concepts in the first papers on ANT, but for some time ANT was
regarded by many as little more than a curiosity. In recent years however,
the ICT research community has begun to discover the power of using ANT as
an explanatory framework for many of the things in which it is interested.
Implementation and use of information and communication technologies
inevitably involves the interactions of both technology and people, and
this is the area in which ANT is particularly useful. The main goal of
this journal will be to facilitate international growth in the body of
research investigating the value of using actor-network theory as a means
of understanding socio-technical phenomena and technological innovation.
Coverage of IJANTTI:
This journal covers a range of topics related to actor-network theory
(ANT). These topics will include the development of actor-network theory
itself, as well as case studies of its use to assist in the explanation of
various socio-technical phenomena. It will also include topics relating to
technological innovation; both those using actor-network theory as an
explanatory framework and those using other approaches. Possible topics
include, but are not restricted to:
Analytical case studies of the use of ANT for investigating technological
applications in various other areas
Analytical case studies of the use of ANT to investigate the
implementation and use of information and communication technologies
Case studies, involving ANT or other analytical frameworks, of
technological innovation, and the implementation and use of information
and communication technologies
Comparison of the various different approaches to framing technological
innovation
Descriptions of ANT research methods, and the conduct of ANT research
Development, evaluations, criticisms, and triumphs of ANT
Innovation translation as an approach to explaining technological
innovation
Other approaches to the explanation of technological innovation, including
innovation diffusion, the technology acceptance model, and ecological
models of innovation
Other papers relating to examples of technological innovation
Proposals of analytical frameworks that build on, and go beyond ANT
Use of ANT in the investigation of historical examples of technological
innovation
Interested authors should consult the journal's manuscript submission
guidelines at www.igi-global.com/ijantti.
All inquiries and submissions should be sent to:

Managing IT Human Resources: Considerations for Organizations and
Personnel
A book edited by Dr. Jerry Luftman
Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey
To be published by IGI Global:
http://www.igiglobal.com/requests/details.asp?ID=722
Introduction
Attracting and retaining top IT talent is a major concern for most
organizations. In the early part of this decade, when the dot com boom
turned to a bust, Y2K was over, and the recession hit, everything came to
a dramatic halt. The economy then improved and was struck with the
recession of 2008. The economy is now improving and the hiring of IT staff
is expected to rebound. It will not likely grow at the breakneck speed of
the 90s, but it is anticipated to grow. It is a continuous cycle.
Today new skills are required to compete in a global economy where
organizations have new alternatives to choose from. In the next ten years
as baby boomers retire, even more opportunities will become available.
Finding IT professionals with specific skills is no easy feat. Todays job
skills require not only strong technical skills, but also excellent
business, industry, communication, marketing, and negotiating abilities.
Objective of the Book
This book will be a comprehensive presentation of current and emerging
perspectives focusing on all aspects of managing IT HR from the view of
both practitioners and academics located around the globe. It will focus
on the results of recent research (from leading practitioners and
academics) and their implications to IT human resource considerations. It
presents what IT professionals are seeking in a position, characteristics
of the IT environment that contributes to the HR complexity, the retention
of IT talent, stress in the workplace, IT career development, and the
impact of IT outsourcing.
Target Audience
This is a critical subject for IT management and human resource management
programs, as well as for practitioners from IT and HR organizations, and
academics seeking to identify program content.
Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Historical perspective of IT HR
b. Current perspective of IT HR

Journal of Strategic Information Systems
=============================================
Special Issue on "Using Strategic Information Systems to Manage Change:
A focus on Healthcare Management Systems"
The progression and development of many first world and emerging market
economies is leading to an increasing dependency upon the healthcare
industry to provide accessible, immediate and relevant support to those
who require medical and health-issue related or attention. History as well
as experience informs us that private as well as public healthcare
programmes and organizations are burdened by the dual weight of
legislature and the effective delivery of services to patients. The pace
and breadth of change within the public sector at large, has also placed
inordinate demands upon those actors within the healthcare sector: namely
policy makers, managers, medical and clinical staff, administration,
support staff, patients and ancillary service providers (such as transport
services, care services, charities and voluntary organizations right
through to pharmaceutical companies and equipment manufacturers). In fact,
all of those who are involved within the extended supply and value chain
in this sector. An underlying component of all of these factors is the
manner by which IS and ICT systems integrate with health-oriented
processes and operations. As such, this special issue seeks to focus on
the nexus of IS, Change and Supply Chain Management in Healthcare, with
reference to how healthcare systems can be strategically designed,
implemented and managed (be they IS or otherwise-driven).
Papers are welcome on any of the following facets listed below:
Management and implementation of Change as it impacts IS in Healthcare
organizations
IS design in Healthcare (patient record systems, patient care and
pathways, patient and resource management): focusing on the health of
individuals and / or populations
Management and Executive Information Systems in Healthcare-oriented
settings (for monitoring and control)
Management of Knowledge and transfer of information across the
provider-supplier-consumer divide
Management of Risk and operational contingencies supported by IS
Socio-technical aspects of stakeholder-driven healthcare IS (at the
organization and individual level): participation, uptake and engagement
in strategic change decisions
Procurement and auction-based systems (effective purchasing and
distribution of business resources and equipment)
Database and data warehouse intelligence applications for healthcare
 Customer Relationship Management systems
Services Design and Services Science relating to patient care pathways
(at populace and individual level)
Benchmarking and performance management of Strategic Healthcare IS
Electronic Government (e-Government) and Transformational Government
(t-Government) policies, practices and experiences at the healthcare level
(shared ICT provision and development of IT staff)
In addition, papers are requested to include a clear methodological basis
in terms of the interplay between IS and organizational theory for
example, the Technology Acquisition Model, Resource-Based View of the
Firm, Granovetters Strength of Ties, Institutional Theory, Actor-Network
Theory to name a few. Researchers as well as practitioners in the
associated fields of Healthcare, IS, Operations / Supply Chain Management
and Organizational Behavior are welcome to submit research and case
experiences along the above lines, and practice-based or empirical work
based upon Quantitative, Qualitative or Mixed-Methods approaches with a
view to interdisciplinary perspectives is particularly encouraged.
Furthermore, respondents to this call may also wish to address the
following thematic challenges as well:
Identifying underlying factors which make IS-led change management
initiatives stick
The effect of Healthcare policies on the implementation of healthcare IS
(i.e. Government or Agency-driven change)
Provision and analysis of local and national healthcare systems (e.g.
planning and patient care pathway design using IS techniques and tools):
how might IS be designed/implemented to support patient-driven health
care, via strategic IS for the co-ordination of healthcare and medical
informatics from and to the patient.
Addressing the Strategic IS triad of People-Process-Technology (or its
counterpart, Resources-Time-Effort)
Balancing Corporate Culture, Corporate Responsibility and Corporate
Governance objectives with IS goals in Healthcare-focussed organizations
(public-private partnership considerations)
Designing and evaluating IS to meet strategic healthcare supply chain
needs (i.e. systems to support the information and logistics relating to
healthcare products and services, directly to all stakeholders)
Business Process Improvement / Re-engineering of healthcare sector IS
(reducing clerical, medical and administrative errors)
Managing and improving performance of organizational and strategic
healthcare IS (patient record systems, diagnosis databases, planning and
resource modeling tools)
Development and management of IS management and professionals to address
healthcare sector challenges
How might IS be designed to support healthcare delivery in the private
healthcare sector (e.g. patient-centered medical homes)?
The effect of trust in the usage of IS in healthcare contexts
(healthcare professionals, patients, support staff and carers)
How might IS be used to deal with/manage health in aging populations?
Improvement of existing and new (de)centralized patient record systems
to inform and direct the design of healthcare policy, processes and
systems (extending to a comparison of nationalized versus privatized
medical record databases)
The Bottom Billion: provision of healthcare services and systems to
third world and emerging market economies (identifying strategic IS
priorities to kick-start effective healthcare supply and value chains, via
governmental, private sector and voluntary-aided organizations).
Thus, the special issue will ultimately try to address how tried and
tested methods of managing change within Healthcare needs to involve and
evolve the input of IS and Operations Management factors. This is because
this industry encapsulates an environment where change is ever emergent
and where organisational stakeholders need to be proactively involved
across many dimensions of product / service delivery.
