Special Issue on* Applications of Empirical Research in Business Process
Management*
*Overview *
Providing effective IS support for business processes has become crucial
for enterprises to stay competitive in their market. In response to this
need numerous process support paradigms (e.g., workflow management,
business service management, case handling), process specification
standards (e.g., WS-BPEL, BPML, BPMN), process tools (e.g., ARIS
Toolset, Tibco Staffware, FLOWer) and supporting methods have emerged in
recent years. Summarized under the term “Business Process Management”
(BPM), these paradigms, standards, tools, and methods have become a
success-critical instrument for improving process performance. Research
in the area of BPM has traditionally focused on the development and
extension of associated tools, methods, standards and technologies.
However, when evaluating the suitability of existing BPM technology for
a particular project, it is important for practitioners and academics
alike to have an informed opinion about their qualities and
deficiencies. In particular, the demand for insights or evaluations of
BPM technology based on empirical research has largely been neglected so
far. This is surprising as the benefits of empirical research have been
demonstrated in areas like software engineering, information systems,
or, indeed, business for a long time. From the introduction of empirical
research methods such as experimental or case study methods into BPM (as
well as into the development of process-aware information systems), we
expect more valid, quantitative or qualitative data on the various
aspects and effects of BPM technology. This becomes important, not only
for IS professionals, but also for researchers dealing with analytical,
theoretical or technical challenges in the field of BPM.
This special issue picks up this demand and seeks to stimulate empirical
research that, in turn, can contribute to a better understanding of the
problems, challenges and existing solutions in the BPM field. In
particular, the special issue shall provide an interdisciplinary forum
for both researchers and practitioners to improve the understanding of
BPM-specific requirements, methods and theories, tools and techniques.
Therefore, the special issue will deal with different facets of applying
and using BPM methods and technologies; and it will give new insights
into the challenges, applications, and perspectives emerging for BPM
technology. With varied contents (empirical frameworks, case studies,
surveys, experiment results, case study research, experience reports,
practitioner reports, etc.) we will present a lively and inspiring issue
for readers from academia and industry.

*** Call for Papers ***
International Worksop on Ontology Driven Software Engineering (ODiSE)
http://fluidity.org.uk/ConferenceCalls/ODiSE2009.html
at the ACM Conference on Object-Oriented Programming, Systems,
Languages and Applications (OOPSLA) 2009
Orlando, Florida, U.S.A.
October 25-29, 2009 (workshop date to be announced)
Overview:
This workshop represents the 6th in a series of related OOPSLA
workshops focusing on the impact of semantics on the development and
re-engineering of software systems. These workshops include three on
‘Semantics of Enterprise Integration’ (2001-2003), one on ‘Legacy
Transformation’ (2004) and one on ‘Semantic-Based Systems
Development’ (2007).
The main theme of the workshop is Ontology-Driven Software Engineering
(ODiSE). ODiSE here refers to the different ways in which ontologies
(i.e., formalized conceptual models of real world domains) can
contribute to improving Software Engineering – its processes and its
artifacts. This use of the term encompasses different and interrelated
aspects of Software Engineering as a discipline. For example: (1)
ontological principles can be used as the basis of improved
development languages; (2) ontologies can help improve the way in
which software development projects are organized; and (3) ontological
domain models can drive or refine typical development phases, such as
requirements, design and implementation.
The motivation for organizing a workshop on ODiSE derives from the
increased interest that ontologies have generated in recent years
within the software community. The relevance of ontologies in Software
Engineering is exemplified, for instance, by the successful OOPSLA
2007 workshop on ‘Semantic-Based Systems Development’, various OMG and
W3C initiatives, and commercial products based on ‘semantic
technologies’. However, regardless of such developments, these efforts
still represent pioneering initiatives in the field of Software
Engineering. As the state-of-the-art stands, ODiSE is still in its
infancy. The adoption of theory and technologies developed by the
Semantic Web community to enhance Software Engineering appears
promising, with many areas that are worth investigating and exploring.
The workshop therefore aims to bring together researchers and
practitioners with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds in
order to discuss and analyze the different perspectives, issues and
challenges of Ontology-Driven Software Engineering. Researchers and
practitioners are invited to provide contributions in the form of
research/case study (max. 15 pages) or position/idea papers (2-3
pages) related to the workshop theme. Topics include, but are not
limited to the following:
Topics include, but are not limited to the following:

domain engineering).
- Project/risk management of ontology-based software systems.
- Ontology-driven guidance of software processes.
- New methodologies, techniques and tools or specializations of
existing ones.
- Languages: RDF, OWL, UML and novel ontology-based development/

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
The Second Workshop on Empirical Assessment in Software Architecture (EASA
09),
in Cambridge, UK, September 14, 2009
Collocated with Working IEEE/IFIP Conference on Software Architecture &
European Conference on Software Architecture (WICSA/ECSA09)
http://www.wicsa.net
----------------
Important Dates
----------------
Submissions: August 14, 2009
Notification: August 28, 2009
Camera Ready Paper: September 7, 2009
Workshop: September 14, 2009
---------------
Workshop Theme
--------------
Software engineering researchers and practitioners have been increasingly
emphasizing the importance of gathering and disseminating empirical
evidence to help researchers to assess current research, identify the
promising areas of research and practitioners to make informed decisions
for selecting a suitable method, technique, or tool for supporting a
particular software development activity. However, there has been
relatively little effort to gather and use empirical evidence to support
the claims of efficacy or capabilities of different methods, techniques,
and tools proposed for developing software. In order to improve this
situation, there has been growing recognition of the importance of
providing community-based forums to debate the need and value of
comparative evaluation of technologies proposed to support software
development activities using evidence-based approaches. The evidence-based
paradigm provides an objective and structured means of assembling and
analysing the available data in order to answer research questions. The
aim of EASA is to debate the importance, benefits, and limitations of
rigorously assessing software architecture research outcomes by utilizing
the methods and approaches from the evidence-based paradigm. The workshop
will provide attendees with an opportunity to critically discuss the
suitability of different assessment mechanisms, techniques and methods for
software architecture discipline. The workshop participants are expected
to propose and debate several questions related to the assessment of
software architecture technologies. Some of the questions to be discussed
are:
How are the software architecture technologies evaluated?
How should software architecture research outcomes be assessed to
support technology transfer?
What are the most appropriate mechanisms and methods to assess and
compare software architecture deign and evaluation technologies (methods,
techniques, and tools)?
What is the role of empirical methods for software architecture research
and practice?
How to empirically assess the usability and usefulness of software
architecture technologies (e.g., Architectural description languages)
within industrial settings and considering cost bounds?
How to support the quality assessment of software architecture
technologies during the different phases of the software lifecycle?
To what extend software architects and project managers should rely on
existing software metrics and traditional quality indicators?
------------------
Topics of Interest
------------------
We invite short papers and extended abstracts on all aspects of assessing
and comparing software architecture technologies, including the following:
Lessons learned from assessing software architecture technologies
Challenges and opportunities of doing empirical studies for assessing
software architecture technologies
The pros and cons of guiding software architecture research through
empirical studies?
Comparative studies between different technologies of software
architecture
Assessment frameworks for software architecture technologies
Measurement mechanics and metrics for assessing the quality of software
architecture technologies
Assessment techniques, methods and tools for different activities of the
software architecture design, description, and evaluation
Infrastructure issues, such experimental design, qualitative modelling
and analysis approaches.
--------------
Workshop Goals
--------------
The main goals of the EASA workshop are the following:
Bring the attention of the software architecture community to the
importance of rigorous assessment and/or comparative evaluation of
software architecture technologies;
Discuss the types of evidence required to support software architecture
technology selection decisions;
Identify and debate on appropriate methodologies and criteria for
assessing software architecture research outcomes;
Identify and debate the benefits and limitations of empirical approaches
for assessing software architecture research and
Provide a platform to create a collaborative environment for researchers
and practitioners interested in systematically gathering and widely
disseminating evidence about the effectiveness and efficiency of software
architecture technologies.
-----------
Submissions
-----------
We seek submissions, which reports empirical studies of software
architecture technologies or describe authors thoughts, lessons learned,
or points of view with respect to the mechanics, importance, and
challenges of utilizing empirical methods for guiding and/or evaluating
software architecture research and practice. Moreover, we are specifically
seeking contributions describing experience and/or novel ideas on how to
assess software architecture research. The presentations will have a high
potential for generating issues that will stimulate the discussions.
All submissions will reviewed by the members of the program committee.
There can be two kinds of submission:
Short papers research-in-progress, industrial experience, problem
description (max 6 pages)
 Extended abstract (max 2 pages)
The accepted papers will be distributed to the workshop participants and
will be made available online before the Workshop. The authors of the
accepted papers will be invited to submit a revised and extended version
of their paper for the post workshop proceedings that are planned to be
digitally published via ACM digital library (Approal pending).
The submissions can be emailed to one of the organizers. For more details
and updates, please visit workshop Wiki:

US-Australasia Workshop for Research on
e-Learning in Engineering Education
Announcement and Call for Applicants
US applications are due July 15, 2009!
Participants are sought for a 1-day workshop on research on distance and blended learning in engineering education to be held at the University of Adelaide, Australia as a post conference activity of the 2009 Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE) Annual Conference. Funded US participants are expected to attend the conference December 6-9 and the workshop December 9-10.
Participants will actively engage in developing an international research agenda for engineering education research on e-learning, including online, distance, and blended learning. Specific topics and technologies of interest may include wikis, games, video conferencing, online courses and labs, learning modules and tutorials, simulations, virtual environments, etc. The results of the workshop will be submitted by the organizers for publication as an article in a special issue of the journal Advances in Engineering Education. Some workshop time will also be set aside for cross-national teams to write abstracts for their own submissions to the special issue. Authors not attending the workshop will also be allowed to submit abstracts for the special issue (abstract deadline: January 11, 2010).
The workshop will bring together approximately six researchers from the US with an approximately equal number of researchers from Australia and New Zealand who are also working in the area of e-learning. We are especially interested in research that is relevant across multiple technologies and formats, such as: scaling up to a variety of formal and informal learning environments, evaluating what engineering topics are best taught online, opening up access to diverse student populations, and evaluating the ethics of distance learning (e.g., dealing with plagiarism and cheating). In addition to the development of an international research agenda, the workshop aims to foster international research collaborations between participants and promote the development of an international community of scholars.
The format of the workshop will be highly interactive, and participants will NOT be expected to submit papers or give lengthy presentations on their research. However, the Australasian Association for Engineering Education is accepting full conference papers (double-blind reviewed prior to acceptance) through July 24: http://www.plevin.com.au/aaee2009/. Applicants may therefore wish to submit conference papers (on e-learning and/or other topics) for possible presentation at AaeE.
Qualifications
Participants should be tenure-track faculty, graduate students, post-docs, or others conducting research in the field of engineering education. Selection criteria for participants include: theoretically-based empirical research related to distance/blended learning in engineering education, potential to advance the field of engineering education, and diversity, broadly defined.
Additional Requirements
This workshop is funded by the US National Science Foundation (Award #0810990), as part of on-going research. If selected to attend the workshop, you will be asked to fill out anonymous evaluation surveys. Workshop interactions will also be observed (but not audio or video recorded) for research purposes. By accepting an invitation to attend the workshop, you imply consent to these procedures. If you wish to opt-out of the research and evaluation procedures, or if you have any questions, please contact workshop co-organizer Kacey Beddoes (kbeddoes(a)vt.edu).
How to apply
The deadline for US participants to apply is July 15, 2009, by 11:59pm EDT. Applications can be found at https://survey.vt.edu/survey/entry.jsp?id=1245761074265. <https://survey.vt.edu/survey/entry.jsp?id=1245761074265. > You will be asked to describe your current research in e-learning, particularly how you use learning theory in the design of e-learning environments and/or how you use learning technologies to advance learning theory. Applicants will be notified of acceptance or rejection by August 15, 2009.
Accepted US participants will receive up to $2,500 toward travel and lodging expenses (receipts required). Workshop attendance is limited to selected participants.

Editorial Preface
Social Media Networks: What Do They Mean for Knowledge Management?
Salvatore Parise
Babson College, Massachusetts, USA
SOCIAL MEDIA IS EVERYWHERE
I recently was part of a 90-minute research presentation on social media at Babson College's Center for Information Management Studies (CIMS). As I was presenting, some audience members were posting "highlights" of the presentation on Twitter. Before the presentation was complete, I had already received comments and requests for the presentation by several of my Twitter "followers". Right after my talk, I was interviewed by Babson marketing, and by the end of the day, the 10-minute audio podcast was put on the college's website, with a link to the podcast posted on Twitter. In the "old days", colleagues might have heard about my talk through word-of-mouth or during chats at conferences (and they still might). But today, dissemination of information through social media networks such as Twitter is real-time and can reach a very large audience. ...

Analyzing R&D Knowledge Flows in the Flat World
Eoin Whelan, University of Limerick, Ireland
Brian Donnellan and Willie Golden, National University of Galway, Ireland
ABSTRACT
Previous research has firmly established the importance of informal social networks in facilitating knowledge flows in research and development (R&D) settings. However, the explosion of Web technologies in recent years have 'flattened' the planet and dramatically altered our understanding of what constitutes a social network. Despite this, current research has neglected to examine how Web technologies have impacted knowledge flows in R&D. To address this research gap, we revisit the highly influential technological gatekeeper theory. Drawing on social network analysis (SNA) and interview evidence from a medical devices R&D group, we find that the gatekeeper role is still vital, but no longer needs to be performed by a single individual. Instead, the modern R&D group can keep abreast of the latest technological advances through a combination of Web-enabled internal and external communication specialists. A unique contribution this paper makes to the IT-enabled social network literature is the development of an updated conceptual framework of how the gatekeeper role is performed in the modern R&D group.

Research Article Two
Limits to Growth: A Theoretical Framework to Simulate Dynamics in Online Community Networks
Peter Otto, Union College, New York, USA
ABSTRACT
Online communities can help an organization discover and share knowledge more effectively by facilitating learning both from within the organization, as well as from entities outside the organization. In those instances where firms have linkages with outside organizations, however, the acquisition and sharing of knowledge takes place free from the constraints of hierarchy and local rules. These networks can be characterized as loosely structured, and generally self-organizing, and made up of individuals who voluntarily participate in the creation and sharing of knowledge. Building online networks without formal boundaries is a challenging task for any organization. This is because those responsible for building them must not only encourage the use of the new tools, but also refrain from intervening too often or with too heavy a hand. The objective of this article is to conceptualize a simulation model with which we can test the effects of structural interventions in online community networks. The simulation model described in this paper is based on an explicit dynamic theory derived from the relevant literature.

Harnessing Unstructured Knowledge: The Business Value of Social Bookmarking at MITRE
Salvatore Parise, Patricia J. Guinan, and Bala Iyer, Babson College, Massachusetts, USA
Donna L. Cuomo and Bill Donaldson, MITRE Corporation, USA
ABSTRACT
Due to an increasingly complex and dynamic environment with respect to gathering and analyzing knowledge for its government clients, the MITRE organization had to re-think its knowledge management strategy. Sharing "unstructured" knowledge, such as a video podcast of a recent external speaker, expert opinions on latest research topics that are on external blogs and websites, and conference presentations residing on people's desktops, among employees was deemed critical. MITRE introduced onomi, a social tagging system which allows users to "tag" any knowledge document or web resource, and to share these bookmarks and tags with other users. In 2008, while there had been anecdotal evidence that this social tool was well-received, measuring the value of these social tools (often called Web 2.0) had been difficult. The challenge remained: How to move adoption of the onomi tool from early adopters to the broader MITRE population. This required convincing employees that onomi provided value to their work and was "not just another tool".

Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies
By Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff
Published in 2008 by Harvard Business Press, ISBN: 978-1-4221-2500-7, 286 pages
Richard G. Platt, University of West Florida, Florida, USA
INTRODUCTION
During the U.S. presidential campaign in 2008, one candidate, when speaking in a state that suffered from high unemployment due to job losses in smoke stack industries, told workers that some "steel jobs are not coming back." (Holland, 2008) His point was that economies, technologies, and jobs had changed and that the jobs that earned people a good living in the mid-20th century were not going to be the jobs that would earn people a good living in the U.S. in the 21st century. That is the same fundamental transformation represented in Groundswell, only the transformation in Groundswell represents a change in the ways people collect, store, communicate, interact, and share information. There is a groundswell that has changed the rules for all of these activities. Some people understand these groundswell transformations and are riding the crest of the wave by harnessing the energy of the groundswell. Others are not so perceptive and are being swept along by the force of the transformations. Explaining the forces at work is what Groundswell does, and does with great clarity and specificity. Just like the presidential candidate describing the changes in jobs (above), Li and Bernoff describe how organizations must change if they are to harness the power of connectedness, or how they will be swept along if they fail to change.

*Aufruf zur Teilnahme an der Fachtagung ‚Lernende Bibliothek 2009‘*
*vom 6.-9. Sept. 09 in Chur, Schweiz*
September 2009 an
Die ethische Frage danach, was
weitere Interessierte.
