CALL FOR PAPERS
Business Process Management Journal
Special issue on IS evaluation and benchmarking for business performance
improvement
Submission deadline: 1st March 2010
Website:
http://info.emeraldinsight.com/products/journals/call_for_papers.htm?PHPSES…

Guest Editors: Stefan Smolnik, Nils Urbach, and Jerry L. Fjermestad
Aim and scope:
Annual worldwide spending on information technology (IT) has been
increasing for many years. By 2010, International Data Cooperation
expects the total expenditure on IT to reach 1.48 trillion US dollars.
Simultaneously, however, a greater number of information systems (IS)
failures are still emerging. A questionnaire-based survey carried out in
2006 in the USA indicated that only 62 per cent of software projects
were considered successful. The measurement of investments and developed
systems' success, as well as the paradox of high investments and low
productivity returns ("productivity paradox"), therefore remain a top
concern for both practitioners and researchers.
During the last two and a half decades, measuring IS success – the
clarification of an important dependent variable in IS research – has
been a popular stream of research. A number of models have been proposed
in attempts to define IS success and identify the various causes of
success or failure respectively. Complementarily, the benchmarking
method allows for an external perspective on the unit of analysis and
therefore for an inter-organizational comparison. Thus, organizations
are able to assess costs and benefits of IS with respect to a peer
group. In addition, benchmarking establishes standards as well as a
shared understanding and common procedures.
Researchers and practitioners interested in submitting papers to this
special issue are encouraged to present research into strategies,
methodologies, and stories that relate to assessing and benchmarking IS
with the objective of improving business processes and overall business
performance. In addition, this special issue will be used to explore the
bodies of performance measurements that define the current state of
research in measuring IS success.
Possible paper topics:
* Frameworks and models for assessing IS success/effectiveness
* Measuring IS success/effectiveness in global organizations and
globally dispersed communities
* Impact of strategic, organizational, process-related, cultural, and
other issues on IS success
* Contribution of IS to improving business processes and their performance
* From process measurement to performance improvement using IS
* Critical discussion of existing approaches (D&M IS Success Model, TAM,
etc.)
* IS success factors and key business process management performance
indicators
* Benchmarking initiatives comparing IS across different organizations
and industries
* Exploring security system success and security benchmarking
* Empirical studies evaluating different kinds of IS such as:
– Customer Relationship Management Systems
– Project (Portfolio) Management Systems
– Business Process Management and Workflow Management Systems
– Knowledge Management Systems
– Decision Support Systems
– Collaborative Systems
– Enterprise Systems.
* Case studies of IS success and performance evaluation
* Why does focusing on system requirements not lead to system success?
Author guidelines:
All papers will be subject to a rigorous double-blind peer review.

Call for Papers
The 3rd IEEE International Conference on Ubi-media Computing (U-Media
2010)
http://conference.cs.cityu.edu.hk/umedia2010/
July 5-6, 2010
Zhejiang Normal University, Jinhua, China
Dynamicity in the cyberspace can be modeled as a spatiotemporal suite of
events populated by computing devices arrivals and departures,
communication channels uses, and multimodal interactions.
Contemporary ubiquitous devices unleash the boundary of one-to-one
human-computer interaction. It has become a de facto style of facilitating
social events, in which participants use several distributed devices
opportunistically through multimodal adaptive interaction. How people
access multimodal media in different contexts of use is key to deliver the
appropriate interactive systems to humans. Ubi-media Computing, as it is
bravely defined, explores challenging issues on how to bring together
technologies for context adaptation, inter-device interaction, and
media/data communication for the well-being of humans.
The conference proceedings will be published by IEEE, with best papers to
be recommended for publication in special issues of international
journals. Topics of interests are divided based on four levels:
Ubi-media Infrastructure
* Heterogeneous Ubi-media Infrastructure
* Ubiquitous Sensor Networks / RFID
* New Ubi-media Devices
* Multimedia Embedded Systems
* Ubi-media Storage and Indexing
* 3G and Advanced Communication Techniques

Special Issue: Adult Learning and Technology
GUEST EDITORIAL PREFACE
Integrating Adult Learning and Technologies for Effective Education
Victor C. X. Wang, California State University at Long Beach, USA
Web-based learning would not be possible without information communication technologies. As courses are taught online on a continuous basis and as degrees are conferred on learners who are able to seek degrees only from online universities, the debate continues regarding the effectiveness of learning or teaching via information communication technologies. Some argue that the whole educational enterprise has been frozen into the pedagogical educational model, which means teachers must direct students’ learning in the traditional classroom settings. The following six articles in this special issue of IJWLLT provides readers with a bird’s eye view of the pertinent issues regarding teaching and learning via information communication technologies.
To read the guest editorial preface, please consult this issue of IJWLLT in your library.
PAPER ONE
Learner-Centered Teaching and the Use of Technology
Annette Greer, East Carolina University, USA
Vivian W. Mott, East Carolina University, USA
In this article, the authors explore the use of various learning technologies as tools for facilitating learner-centered teaching. This article offers another perspective on the scholarship of teaching with technology—through discussion of various theoretical models of learner-centered teaching, the role of technology on the student/instructor relationships, the impact on technology in different educational settings, and contexts and learners’ cultural differences. The authors conclude with a brief discussion of future trends, cautions, and speculations related to technology use in learner-centered teaching.

PAPER TWO
Effective Teaching with Technology in Adult Education
Victor C. X. Wang, California State University, Long Beach, USA
Effective teaching with technology in adult education stems from many factors. Not only are teachers of adult learners required to study the tools related to the use of technology, but are also required to study the nature of knowledge, the nature of learning, constructivism and various kinds of teaching philosophies. Without thorough knowledge of these factors, effective teaching with technology cannot occur in adult education, let alone other educational fields. In this article, the author addresses the interrelationships between the use of technologies and the teaching and learning process.

PAPER THREE
Teaching Adult Learners in Online Career and Technical Education
Victor M. Hernández-Gantes, University of South Florida, USA
Online education is becoming an important component of career and technical education (CTE) in teacher preparation and at the graduate level. In the midst of such growth and in response to questions about quality compared with traditional learning, there is a consensus that online courses and programs should be designed based on the needs of adult learners; however, much of the literature in online CTE lacks implicit connections to emerging notions of adult development and learning. This article provides an overview of the status of online education in CTE at the postsecondary level, discusses related issues and current research focus, and highlights adult learning developments and implications for curriculum design, instruction, and use of technology. The author concludes with an outline of emerging trends bridging adult learning and online education relevant to career and technical education.

PAPER FOUR
The Role of Learning Styles and Technology
Royce Ann Collins, Kansas State University, USA
Learning style research has informed effective classroom teaching strategies for decades. Technology has allowed faculty and students to move the learning environment from the four-walled classroom to a fluid global virtual space. Knowledge gained through the application of learning style research to online instruction has enhanced practice; however, research demonstrating the alignment of learning styles with current technological resources has been limited. Learning styles and their interrelationship with technology and adult learners is as important today as initial learning style research was in the six decades after its beginnings in the 1940s. Education today must meet the needs of students who are more comfortable in electronic environments, as well as those who need the four-walled classroom.

PAPER FIVE
Comparing the Principles of Adult Learning with Traditional Pedagogical Teaching in Relation to the Use of Technology: The Tacit Dimension in ICT-Based University Teaching
Manuel Ahedo, Rovira i Virgili University, Spain
The traditional principles of adult learning are being subject to critical reconsideration from new adult teaching approaches and a growing use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). ICTs in adult learning have an ambivalent effect. On the one hand, they offer potential improvement in online communicative activities and the transmission of codified or explicit knowledge. On the other hand, they can reduce socially and interactive-mediated tacit teaching and learning. Thus, the crucial criterion for effective and complementary use of ICTs in adult andragogy is whether they enable time and social space for the tacit dimension of teaching and learning. This article analyzes these issues by comparing how two young universities in Spain have dealt with these effects of ICTs in relation to the tacit dimension of learning and teaching.

PAPER SIX
Technological Trends in Adult Education: Past, Present and in the Future
John K. Hope, University of Auckland, New Zealand
In this article, the author provides a critical review of the past two decades of technology use in adult education. The article begins with a brief summary of technological trends, such as the introduction of the Internet and the World Wide Web, that have influenced adult education over the past two decades. Political, economic, social, and pedagogical issues that have influenced the use of technology in adult education are also discussed and possible solutions to these issues are outlined. This article concludes with an attempt to extrapolate future technological trends that could influence the direction of adult education in the decade to come.

CALL FOR PAPERS
First International Workshop on
Product LinE Approaches
in Software Engineering (PLEASE 2010)
held in conjunction with
the 32nd International Conference
on Software Engineering (ICSE 2010)
http://please2010.haifa.il.ibm.com/
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
1 WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
===================
Software Product Line Engineering (SPLE) is an engineering technique for
creating a portfolio of similar systems from a shared set of software
assets. It capitalizes on identifying commonalities and points of
variability across the portfolio and promotes strategic software reuse.
Organizations that adopt SPLE are able to achieve significant
improvement in development and maintenance costs, time-to-market,
portfolio size, and quality.
This workshop's main goal is to explore new ways for making SPLE more
approachable to software practitioners from all segments of the
industry, thus broadening its adoption. We seek to tear down barriers by
allowing the SPLE community to share its ideas regarding approaches,
techniques and tools, with the broader software engineering community.
In addition, the workshop designates Beyond Traditional Product Lines as
a special theme: Traditionally, SPLE builds on the assumptions that (a)
the scope of the product line is clearly defined in advance and stays
relatively stable and (b) SPLE activities are mainly performed within
and controlled by one organization. These assumptions fall apart as soon
as the product line starts to evolve or the SPLE value chains extend
across organizational boundaries.
As a direct result we designate the following question as the workshop's
special theme: How do we deal with scenarios where we want to design and
build families of similar systems, but (a) cannot rely on a clearly
defined and stable scope and (b) the software ecosystem extends beyond
organizational boundaries?
2 TOPICS
========
Topics of the workshop include (but are not limited to) the following:
* Model-driven approaches for software product line engineering
* Variant management, notations and representation
* Product line engineering for very large, complex systems and
systems-of-systems
* Software product lines in software ecosystems
* Inter-organizational approaches to product lines
* Incremental development of product lines
* Validation of product lines
* Product line evolution and software configuration management
* Migration strategies towards product lines; extracting product line
models from legacy software artifacts
* Empirical studies and experience reports
* Vision of the future of product line engineering

Ontologies-Driven Web Mining: Concepts and Techniques
A book edited by
Hector Oscar Nigro and Sandra Elizabeth Gonzalez Císaro
Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA
To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com/request
/details.asp?ID=732
Introduction
Semantic Web mining aims to combine the development of two research areas,
namely Semantic Web and Web mining. Web mining extracts information from
the content of the pages, its structure of relationships (links), and the
users browsing records.
Both areas are collaborating in different ways:
a) Mining Web techniques can help create a Semantic Web. A very important
portion of Semantic Web is the ontologies. The ontology is represented as
a set of concepts and their relevant interrelations for certain domains of
knowledge. The challenge is to learn ontologies and/or their concepts, in
order to make a scalable solution for a wide range of Semantic Web
technologies.
b) Knowledge in the form of ontologies, or other forms of representation
of knowledge, can be used to improve the process and the results of mining
Web. Knowledge provided by the ontology is useful in defining the
structure and the scope for Web content mining.
In the interaction between ontologies and Web mining, we can mention the
following applications:
Sentiment analysis, also called opinion mining, is responsible for
classifying words, texts or documents of opinion, and emotions or feelings
that express agreement. It works in tagging texts and their components,
which indicate if the expression is positive, negative, or neutral, and in
the field of the subjectivity of texts, as well. The area is called
affective computing, that is, the development of means to enable machines
to detect and to respond in an appropriate manner to the emotions of
users.
Optimization in search engines is criteria that must be taken into
account in order to plan a campaign of positioning a Web page, its life
cycle, and a selection of tools to help analyze the positioning of a site,
as well as give keys to improve it. The study of the various basic
attributes of an individual Web resource is not sufficient to infer the
different strategies of positioning of a search engine. The fundamental
problem is that the relationship between the different elements of the
page and weight that each one brings to the final positioning. The
application of various techniques of inductive learning can be a starting
point for the optimization of the Web positioning.
Web intelligence (WI) is a research paradigm aimed at exploration of the
fundamental interactions between artificial intelligence (AI), advanced
engineering, and advanced information technology (AIT). Engineering, here,
is a general term referring to, (a) a new area, for example, informatics
of the brain, IA human level, intelligent agents, and intelligence social
networks; (b) classics, such as engineering knowledge, representation,
planning, discovery, and data extraction.
The ontologies will give semantic richness to Web mining process, thus
they will facilitate the understanding of the results obtained and the
whole process performance.
Objective of the Book
This book aims at publishing original academic or industrial work in the
form of high quality, scientific papers. The key objective is to provide
Web mining students, practitioners, professionals, professors, and
researchers an integral vision of the topic, specifically focusing on
those areas that explore new methodologies or examine real study caseall
of them ontologies-based.
This publication should describe the state-of-the-art, innovative
theoretical supports, advanced and successful implementations, as well as
the latest empirical research findings in the area of ontologies-driven
Web mining.
Target Audience
The target audience of this book will be composed of readers who wish to
learn how to apply ontologies-driven Web mining to real world problems.
The purpose is to show users how to go from theory and algorithms to real
applications.
The book will present to students, practitioners, professionals,
professors, and researchers basic notions in data mining or Web mining.
Information technology researchers and practitioners can increase their
knowledge and skills with these new techniques. This book can be used as a
library reference, upper-level course supplement, or for postgraduate
courses.
Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
Theoretic foundations on Web mining ontologies-based approach
 Ontologies in Web mining process
Ontology-based interpretation and validation of mined knowledge
Intelligent assistants for Web mining with ontologies
Interaction from ontologies to Web mining
Knowledge grids and Web mining ontology
 Ontology-based optimization in search engines
 Opinion mining with ontologies
Real study cases, implementing Web mining based on ontologies
Submission Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before December
14, 2009, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and
concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals
will be notified by December 29, 2009 about the status of their proposals
and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by

http://trust.csu.edu.cn/conference/tsp2010
To be held in conjunction with
The 10th IEEE International Conference on Computer and Information Technology (CIT 2010)
http://www.scim.brad.ac.uk/~ylwu/CIT2010/
Introduction
Satisfying user requirements for trust, security and privacy in an efficient way is one of the first considerations for almost all emerging
applications, using emerging technologies such as pervasive computing, peer to peer computing, grid computing, cloud computing, virtualization and,
mobile and wireless technologies. Challenges arise as emerging applications evolve to provide more scalable and comprehensive services. One of the
biggest challenges is that traditional security technologies and measures may not meet user requirements in open, dynamic, heterogeneous, and
distributed computing environments. Therefore, we need to build networks and systems in which emerging applications allow users to enjoy more scalable
and comprehensive services while preserving trust, security and privacy at the same time.
Following the success of TSP 2008 in Shanghai, China during December 17-20, 2008, and TSP-09 in Macau SAR, China, during October 12-14, 2009, The
Third IEEE International Symposium on Trust, Security and Privacy for Emerging Applications (TSP-10) will be held in Bradford, UK, during June 29-July
