RESEARCH PAPER 1: A cognitive semantics for the association construct, by
Joerg Evermann
ABSTRACT: The unified modelling language (UML), besides its traditional
use in describing software artifacts, is increasingly being used for
conceptual modelling, the activity of describing an application domain.
For models to be clear and unambiguous, every construct of the modelling
language must have well-defined semantics, which is its mapping to
elements of the semantic domain. When used for conceptual modelling, the
semantic domain of UML is the application domain, as perceived by the
modeller. Modellers perceive and structure their perceptions using
cognitive concepts. This paper proposes a mapping of the UML association
construct to those concepts. Implications for the use of the association
construct for conceptual modelling are derived, a UML profile for
conceptual modelling is presented, along with the results of a case study
using the semantics and profile.
RESEARCH PAPER 2: Composing requirements specifications from multiple
prioritized sources, by Ana Belén Barragáns Martínez, José J. Pazos Arias,
Ana Fernández Vilas, Jorge García Duque, Martín López Nores, Rebeca P.
Díaz Redondo and Yolanda Blanco Fernández
ABSTRACT: The formal methodology MultiSpec supports the evolution of
software specifications gathered from multiple perspectives. A
viewpoint-based approach is used to explicitly separate the descriptions
provided by different stakeholders, and concentrate on identifying and
resolving conflicts between them. The challenge addressed in this article
consists in taking into account that some views may have greater degrees
of relevance and, consequently, their opinion will have more importance
when either obtaining the merged model or resolving the contradictions. To
this end, we propose a priority-based approach, where such priority value
is twofold. On the one hand, it considers external factors to the
perspectives such as the importance assigned to each view by the analyst
depending on who is specifying the view or the amount of stakeholders
involved in that specification. On the other hand, this priority value
also considers internal factors related to the quality of the views and,
in order to be able to quantify this value, MultiSpec proposes two
measures: coverage and density of each perspective which will be combined
in a completeness value. The contributions of this approach will be
clearly illustrated through a simple example.
RESEARCH PAPER 3: Requirements for tools for ambiguity identification and
measurement in natural language requirements specifications, by Nadzeya
Kiyavitskaya, Nicola Zeni, Luisa Mich and Daniel M. Berry
ABSTRACT: This paper proposes a two-step approach to identifying
ambiguities in natural language (NL) requirements specifications (RSs). In
the first step, a tool would apply a set of ambiguity measures to a RS in
order to identify potentially ambiguous sentences in the RS. In the second
step, another tool would show what specifically is potentially ambiguous
about each potentially ambiguous sentence. The final decision of ambiguity
remains with the human users of the tools. The paper describes several
requirements-identification experiments with several small NL RSs using
four prototypes of the first tool based on linguistic instruments and
resources of different complexity and a manual mock-up of the second tool.
RESEARCH PAPER 4: Addressing privacy requirements in system design: the
PriS method, BY Christos Kalloniatis, Evangelia Kavakli and Stefanos
Gritzalis
ABSTRACT: A major challenge in the field of software engineering is to
make users trust the software that they use in their every day activities
for professional or recreational reasons. Trusting software depends on
various elements, one of which is the protection of user privacy.
Protecting privacy is about complying with users desires when it comes to
handling personal information. Users privacy can also be defined as the
right to determine when, how and to what extend information about them is
communicated to others. Current research stresses the need for addressing
privacy issues during the system design rather than during the system
implementation phase. To this end, this paper describes PriS, a security
requirements engineering method, which incorporates privacy requirements
early in the system development process. PriS considers privacy
requirements as organisational goals that need to be satisfied and adopts
the use of privacy-process patterns as a way to: (1) describe the effect
of privacy requirements on business processes; and (2) facilitate the
identification of the system architecture that best supports the
privacy-related business processes. In this way, PriS provides a holistic
approach from high-level goals to privacy-compliant IT systems. The
PriS way-of-working is formally defined thus, enabling the development of
automated tools for assisting its application.
SCOPE OF THE REQUIREMENTS ENGINEERING JOURNAL
---------------------------------------------
The journal provides a focus for the dissemination of new results about
the elicitation, representation and validation of requirements of software
intensive information systems or applications. Theoretical and applied
submissions are welcome, but all papers must explicitly address:(a) the
practical consequences of the ideas for the design of complex systems and
(b) how the ideas should be evaluated by the reflective practitioner.
The journal is motivated by a multi-disciplinary view that considers
requirements not only in terms of software components specification but
also in terms of activities for their elicitation, representation and
agreement, carried out within an organisational and social context. To
this end, contributions are sought from fields such as software
engineering, information systems, occupational sociology, cognitive and
organisational psychology, human-computer interaction, computer-supported
cooperative work, linguistics and philosophy for work addressing
specifically requirements engineering issues.
Specific topics include, but are not restricted to:
- Theories and models relevant to requirements engineering
- The intersection of requirements engineering with business engineering
- Elicitation techniques including ethnography and social studies, task
analysis, HCI approaches, user centered approaches, participatory design,
facilitation techniques, cooperative requirements engineering
- Analysis and valuation of cultural, political and organisational factors
that affect requirements engineering practice
- Architecture and functions of computer-based tools and environments for
requirements engineering
- Scenarios, design rationales and argumentation-based approaches
- The state of practice, including evaluations of different approaches in
industrial-size projects: papers on problems in requirements
- Comprehensive reviews of current research and practice that synthesize
findings not customarily integrated in the same place, and reports
describing the unifying vision of research underway at particular
institutions or research groups.

special issue attempts to provide a nexus of all these areas with
particular reference to identifying outstanding great challenges such as
adoption of KM philosophies and concepts as part of individual or
organizational cultures, Eastern-Western and Northern-Southern
interpretations of knowledge, and Development of Communities of Practice
(CoP) as integrating and facilitating knowledge transfer.
We invite papers on all topics related to knowledge management transfer,
but especially those that aim to provide a forum for exchanging research
ideas and practices which bridge the organizational, sociological,
technical, and individual aspects within business organizations, as well
as those that discuss and analyze interdisciplinary aspects of KM, in
terms of current practice, research, and conceptual development across
academe and industry. Conceptual, empirical, case-based, and/or
survey-based modes of research enquiry papers are welcomed, and the
editors strongly support multidisciplinary research which can provide
insights into the above research areas.

!!!Final Call for papers!!! EXTENDED DEADLINE
=========================================================
Call for Papers:
Workshop on Cultural usability and Human Work Interaction Design
Sunday, 19th October 2008, Lund, Sweden
In conjunction with NordiCHI 2008
Deadline for submissions: September 1st 2008.
=========================================================
This workshop analyzes the use of techniques to connect empirical work
analysis and interaction design in different cultural contexts. In
industry, a wealth of usability evaluation methods is used to evaluate
computer software user interfaces and other interactive products:
Inspection methods, Workplace observation, Think-Aloud Usability Test,
etc. These techniques often give - seemingly - similar results when
applied in diverse cultural settings, but experience shows that we need a
deep understanding of the cultural, social and organizational context to
interpret the results, and to transform it into interaction design.
The workshop will present current research into cultural usability and
human work interaction design. Cultural usability is a comprehensive
concept which adheres to all kinds of contexts in which humans are
involved (private family, work, public and private organizations, nature
and climate, etc.).
The purpose of the workshop is to enable practitioners and researchers to
analyze the use of techniques that connect empirical work analysis and
interaction design in different cultural contexts. The workshop
presentations and discussions may form the input to a call for a special
issue. We expect the participants will be people attending NordiChi2008
with an interest in connecting empirical work analysis and interaction
design in different cultural contexts. The workshop will be conducted in a
good social atmosphere that invites to openness and provides time to
reflection.
We invite position papers about:
 The use of ethnographic methods to generate scenarios and use
cases in a
foreign country
 Work style modeling in different cultural contexts
 Using card sorting methods to discover cultural differences in
information architecture and design preferences
 Usability testing and cultural differences in socializing and
communication
 Recruiting surrogate users in usability practice and research
 Socio-technical design in different cultural contexts
 The use of elicitation techniques with different cultures
 Conceptual framework of cultural factors in interaction design

Call for Papers: Special Issue on
"Computational Intelligence Issues in Systems Experiencing Nonlinear
Dynamics and Synchronization"
- International Journal of Computational Intelligence Systems -
========================================================================
Guest Editors:
K. Kyamakya (Univ. Klagenfurt, Austria); A. Bouchachia (Univ.
Klagenfurt, Austria); W. Halang, Univ. Hagen, Germany; J. C. Chedjou
(Univ. Klagenfurt, Austria); Z. Li (Univ. Hagen, Germany), H. Unger
(Univ. Hagen, Germany)
Description and Aims:
A fundamental issue in systems analysis and modeling is about the
identification of the system's dynamics including the external
interactions that affect the system's behavior. Such identification aims
at specifying the set of functions (rules or equations) that captures
the factors that control the change of the system's behavior. Often,
when dealing with complex nonlinear dynamical systems, the
identification is obtained in many cases only by means of
approximations. Hence, the relevance of Computational Intelligence (CI)
techniques in the context of such systems becomes manifest. The
application of such computing models is prompted by the optimization
requirements that are raised amongst others by the identification
process. In addition, over the last years the appropriateness of CI in
optimization tasks pertaining to complex nonlinear dynamical systems has
become indubitable as attested by a large number of studies reporting on
the successful application of CI models especially in adaptive control
applications, fault diagnostic, signal processing, chaos theory, medical
diagnostic, etc.
However, due to the complexity dimensions of nonlinear dynamical
systems, there still exits a large spectrum of unsolved problems that go
beyond the traditional intelligent control applications and where CI
techniques can play a central role. That is the main purpose behind the
present special issue. In fact, the aim of this special issue is to
present the latest advances of the application of CI techniques not only
in control applications but in various systems where nonlinear dynamics
and/or synchronization are key issues of concern. The special issue is
intended for a wide audience including mathematicians, physicists,
chemists, engineers, computer scientists, biologists, economists and
social scientists.
This special issue will cover various topics intertwining CI and both
nonlinear dynamics and/or synchronization. A sample of the targeted
topics, which is suggestive rather than exhaustive, includes:
* Nonlinear systems and synchronization
* Nonlinear systems and synchronization (theory, design and simulation)
* Chaos in pattern recognition and soft computing
* Theory and applications of cellular automata and cellular neural
networks
* CI techniques in nonlinear dynamical systems
* Computational aspects of nonlinear dynamics and synchronization in:
* Cybernetic
* Systems control Robotics
* Signal processing
* Sequence processing
* Decision making
* Image and video processing
* Traffic management systems
* Supply chains and logistics systems
* Intelligent agents technology
* Self-reconfigurable systems
* Self-healing systems
* Self-testing systems
* Oscillatory systems
* Networking systems
* Bio-computing and bio-chemistry

Call for Papers/Abstracts and Invited Sessions Proposals for The 2nd International Multi-Conference on Engineering and Technological Innovation (July 10th-13th, 2009 - Orlando, Florida, USA). http://www.2009iiisconferences.org/IMETI
Deadlines:
Papers/Abstracts Submissions and Invited Sessions Proposals: September 24th, 2008
Authors Notifications: November 17th, 2008
Camera-ready, full papers: February 4th, 2009
-------------------------------------------------------
All Submitted papers/abstracts will go through three reviewing processes: (1) double-blind (at least three reviewers), (2) non-blind, and (3) participative peer reviews. These three kinds of review will support the selection process of those papers/abstracts that will be accepted for their presentation at the conference, as well as those to be selected for their publication in JSCI Journal.
Authors of accepted papers who registered in the conference can have access to the evaluations and possible feedback provided by the reviewers who recommended the acceptance of their papers/abstracts, so they can accordingly improve the final version of their papers. Non-registered authors will not have access to the reviews of their respective submissions.
Registration fees of an effective invited session organizer will be waived according to the policy described in the web page 'Benefits of Invited Session Organizers' (click on 'Invited Session', then on 'Benefits for the Organizers of Invited Sessions'), where you can get information about the ten benefits for an invited session organizer. For Invited Sessions Proposals, please go to the conference web site, or directly to http://www.2009iiisconferences.org/IMETI/organizer.asp
Authors of the best 10%-20% of the papers presented at the conference will be invited to adapt their papers for their publication in the Journal of Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics.
There will also be corresponding e-conferences during the 15 days before and after the conference, where each session to be included in the conference program will have a corresponding electronic pre-conference and post-conference virtual session for 15 days. In the electronic pre-conference sessions, authors will have access to the papers to be presented at their session and to an associated electronic forum, so they can be better prepared for their face-to-face conference session. Similarly, electronic post-conference sessions will complement and support a follow-up of the respective conference sessions, via an electronic forum and the possibility of evaluating papers presented at the associated session. These evaluations will also support the selection process for the papers to be published in the JSCI journal.
Best regards,
