CALL FOR PAPERS AND SPECIAL ISSUE PROPOSALS
Journal of Organizational and End User Computing
JOEUC Special Issue Proposals
JOEUC invites proposals from well-published scholars for a special issue on End User Computing from Government's and or from Individual Citizens' Perspective. If you are interested, please send a proposal to the editor.
JOEUC Mission:
The primary purpose of the Journal of Organizational and End User Computing (JOEUC) is to provide a forum to information technology educators, researchers, and practitioners to advance the practice and understanding of organizational and end user computing. Prospective authors are invited to submit manuscripts for possible publication in JOEUC. The journal publishes empirical and theoretical research concerned with all aspects of organizational and end user computing. The journal is especially interested in those research studies that show a significant contribution to the area by relating organizational and end user computing to organizational and end user performance and productivity, strategic and competitive advantage, and electronic commerce. It publishes full-length research manuscripts, insightful research and practice notes, and case studies from all areas of organizational and end user computing.
JOEUC Coverage:
Topics should be drawn from, but not limited to, the following areas, with major emphasis on how to increase organizational and end user productivity and performance, and how to achieve organizational strategic and competitive advantage:
Organizational and end user computing (OEUC) productivity and performance; OEUC and how it affects organizational strategic and competitive advantage; OEUC and how it relates to information resources management; using and managing emerging OEUC technologies including electronic commerce; OEUC satisfaction; OEUC in various management functions; OEUC usage; OEUC privacy, security, and copyright issues; OEUC success factors; OEUC controls for security and privacy; OEUC risk factors; OEUC management; OEUC hardware and software; OEUC supports and training.
In general, the journal seeks contributions concerning any aspect of organizational and end user information processing including development, usage, satisfaction, performance, productivity, success, failure, policies, strategies, and management. The journal invites contributions from educators, researchers, and practitioners involved in research, management, and utilization of organizational and end user computing.
JOEUC Submissions:
All manuscripts submitted to JOEUC will undergo a two-way blind review. Authors are asked to submit electronically as an email attachment or mail four copies of their original, previously unpublished manuscript that satisfies the following conditions:
Ø Must not be currently under review by another journal.
Ø Must be written in APA (American Psychological Association) editorial style.
Ø Should not exceed 25 double-spaced typed pages.
Ø Must be accompanied by a cover page with author(s)' name, address, telephone number, and affiliation.
Ø Should be accompanied by a 150-200 word vita of author(s) on a separate sheet.
Ø Must be accompanied by a 150-200 word abstract on a separate sheet with appropriate key words for the papers.
JOEUC also invites significant and insightful research and practice notes, case studies, editorials, and book reviews from all areas of organizational and end user computing. Submitted pieces for this section should not exceed 15 double-spaced pages.
JOEUC Review process:
To ensure high quality of the published materials, JOEUC utilizes a group of experts to review submitted manuscripts. Upon receipt of a manuscript, two reviewers are selected from the Editorial Review Board of the journal to review the manuscript. The selection is based on the area of expertise of the reviewers, matched to the subject matter of the submission. An additional ad-hoc reviewer (usually an author who has previously published in JOEUC and who has expertise in the area) is also selected to review the manuscript. Each submission is, therefore, blind reviewed by at least three reviewers. If at least two reviewers make favorable recommendations on a manuscript, the author(s) are given an opportunity to revise the manuscript. The revised manuscript is blind reviewed by an associate editor (AE) and finally reviewed by the editor. Return of a manuscript to the author(s) for revision(s) does not guarantee an acceptance of the manuscript for publication but it is a step in the right direction. The final decision on a manuscript is made based on comments of the reviewers and AE, and the quality of the revised manuscript.
ALL SUBMISSIONS AND QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO:

First IEEE/ACM Workshop on Applied Ontologies in Distributed Systems
(WAODS)
in conjunction with CSTST'08, sponsored by IEEE and in cooperation with
ACM SigAPP.fr
October 26--30, 2008, Cergy Pontoise, France
Ontologies are becoming widespread in several and disconnected domains.
Their usage lead to new software architectures, especially in the field
of distributed systems. It is however difficult to measure the impact of
the use of ontologies in those systems.
Obviously, feed backs from innovative software driven by knowledge
management systems are mandatory for a better comprehension on how
ontologies are used in real use case (how does ontologies perform in
practice ? What is the benefit for the software architect using them ?
What is the benefit for the user ? What are their limitations ? What are
the drawbacks of using ontologies, rules for special domains etc.).
WAODS is a unique chance to make people interested in knowledge-based
systems meet, from theoretical aspects to applied research project.
WAODS solicits research submissions on all topics related to ontologies
in distributed systems, including but not limited to the following list:
- Knowledge Based Systems (KBS)
- Use cases and feed backs involving domain ontologies
- Ontologies integration
- Knowledge Engineering
- Rule based applications
- Common mistakes in ontologies design
- Interoperability and ontologies
- Semantic web and ontologies deployments
- Edition tools for ontologies
- Verification tools for ontologies
- Knowledge Management in distributed systems
- KBS in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Semantic information retrieval
- Ontologies in SAO and Web Services
- Web 3.0 ("Web 2.0 + ontologies")
- Ontologies and computer supported collaborative work
- Ontologies in e-commerce, e-government

Greetings,
I've tried searching previous AISWorld posts but I haven't found a
recent discussion of this topic.
I've been teaching undergraduate database design in the Computer
Information Systems department in the College of Business at my
university. I've been using entity relationship diagrams (ERDs) with
crow's foot notation for conceptual and logical data modeling. However,
I want to be sure that I'm teaching my students the techniques that are
going to be most useful to them. It has been my belief that:
Computer Science-oriented IS programs typically use UML
Business-oriented IS programs in Europe use UML
Business-oriented IS programs in the US use ERDs (with crow's foot being
the most popular notation).
It has also been my belief that most US businesses most commonly use
ERDs with crow's foot notation in practice.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone else about what modeling
techniques are being used in other universities for teaching conceptual
and logical data modeling, and especially any insights concerning the
modeling techniques actually being used by businesses in practice.
Regards,
Steve

Dear Colleagues
CALL FOR PAPERS
Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society (JICES)
http://www.emeraldinsight.com/Insight/viewContainer.do?containerType=Journa…
ISSN: 1477-996X
Special Issue on 'ICTs and Social Inclusion'
Guest Editors: Cathy Urquhart, Information Systems and Operations Management, University of Auckland Business School Yvonne Underhill-Sem, Centre for Development Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Auckland
The Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society is an international, refereed journal that aims to provide interdisciplinary perspectives on the social and ethical impacts of new media and information and communication technologies on society, organisations, the environment and individuals.
While information and communication technologies (ICTs) may appear ubiquitous in the 21st century, access to those ICTs is far from universal. The term 'social inclusion' has been suggested as a more positive way of approaching this digital divide (Warschauer 2003).
Social inclusion is defined as 'participation in the determination of both individual and collective life chances' (Stewart 2000). Thus there is more to social inclusion than equal access to resources, and it should be recognised that even wealthy individuals may be excluded because of discrimination based on gender, race, sexual preference or disability, or political persecution (Warschauer 2003). For instance, there is evidence that African Americans are socially excluded from participation in ICTs despite the US being a so-called developed country, and this is true of many poorer communities in developed countries. In developing countries, there is evidence that ICT initiatives tend to favour those who already have access to ICTs through a superior education (Warschauer 2003). It is inceasingly important to locate ICTs within the particular social conditions because as with all technologies, they are an integral aspect of socio-political, economic and cultural development (Hufkin and Huyer 2006).
ICTs can play a crucial role in shaping collective life chances, for instance the access to information that ICTs offer can help poverty reduction. ICTs also facilitate the building of human and social capital through increasing flows of information, and building on knowledge and human capacity for poverty reduction (Urquhart, Liyanage and Kah 2007).
In addition to their empowering possibilities, ICTs have also inhibiting tendencies especially when information and communication is not integrated within development strategies. These contradictory tendencies invite more careful theoretically nuanced analysis of ICTs and social inclusion.
If the position of social inclusion implies equal access to technology for all, then the sustainability of ICTs in terms of how they are designed, used and disposed of is also of relevance. E-waste is a problem in some developing countries, and can be seen to be contrary to the social inclusion ideal as some countries end up processing other countries -waste. Such actions are likely to have generational effects, socially and ecologically. Social inclusion by implication has a concern with equity and social justice - and environmental problems like global warming do not respect political boundaries. For these reasons, we also invite papers that look at novel perspectives on ICTs and environmental issues.
Possible topics for papers include but are not limited to:
*Assessing government policies and initiatives that counter
social exclusion in ICTs
* Economic perspectives on access to ICTs such as government
policy and ICT infrastructure
*Access, ownership and control of ICTs (including the micro and
macro politics of artefacts)
*Social, spatial and philosophical dimensions of ICTs and social
inclusion
*ICTs and social inclusion as a result of gender inequality,
racial discrimination and other aspects of social exclusion
* The role of human and social capital in effective access and use
of ICTs
* The role of virtual communities in promoting social inclusion
* Unintended consequences of ICT for social inclusion
* ICTs and e-government
* The role of ICTs in economic development.
* How ICTs are reconfiguring traditional notions of citizenship
and participation.
* Sustainable ICTs and ICTs which assist with problems of climate
change and environmental monitoring.
Please feel free to contact Cathy Urquhart on c.urquhart(a)auckland.ac.nz or Yvonne Underhill-Sem on y.underhill-sem(a)auckland.ac.nz with any queries on submission. See http://www.emeraldinsight.com/info/journals/jices/notes.jsp for guidelines on submission. The normal length requirement is 7000 words but we are also inviting shorter submissions on cutting edge research that is in an earlier stage of development. The papers should be emailed to both guest editors.

General Theme : Ethics, Design and Consequence of Infomation Systems
Bruce Mau challenges our technological age and asks: Now that we can
do anything, what will we do?
At ICIS in Paris 2008, we will confront the ways in which we are creating
informational environments with IT, and the consequences they have for
organizations and for society. We will ask: are we really doing what we
want, what we are worthy of, and what we desire for society? Are we
creating betterment for human beings? Our intention is to challenge global
academic and industrial leaders toconfront the ethical basis, the design
processes and the consequences of IT as we create a worldwide ubiquitous
presence of information and communication technologies.
