Specific issues of interest are defining quality measures, evaluating and managing architecture quality, linking architecture to requirements and implementation, and preserving architecture quality throughout the lifetime of the system. This year, the main topic of QoSA is architectures for adaptive software systems. Modern software systems must often reconfigure their structure and behavior to respond to continuous changes in requirements and in their execution environment. In these settings, quality models are helpful at an architectural level to guide systematic model-driven software development strategies by evaluating the impact of competing architectural choices. At run time, quality models can play an important role in enabling calibration and validation of a system model to accurately reflect the properties of the executing system. This leads to the idea that models should continue to exist at run time to facilitate the necessary dynamic changes that can support self-adaptation of the implemented system. We welcome technical reports on both scientific novel results and industrial case studies. TOPICS OF INTEREST include, but are not limited to Architecture Design and Implementation: * design decisions and their influence on the quality of software architecture * architectural patterns and their quality impacts * architectural standards and reference architectures * model-driven architecture (MDA) and quality aspects * relationship between quality attributes and architectural design properties Architecture Evaluation: * lessons learned and empirical validation of theories and frameworks on architecture quality * empirical validation of testing, prototyping, simulation for assessing architecture quality * models and specification techniques to evaluate the quality attributes of software architectures * languages for architectural modeling including quality characteristic evaluation * processes for evaluating architecture quality * evaluating the effects of architectural adaptations at run-time Architecture Management: * coordination of business architecture, business processes, and software architecture * assessment and enforcement of architectural conformance, especially in the face of run-time adaptation * traceability of software architecture to requirements and implementation * integration of heterogeneous software architectures * architecture evolution and architecture governance * use of architectural models at run-time Application Domains: * component-based and service-oriented systems * software product-lines * pervasive and autonomic systems =================================================================== PUBLICATION Accepted contributions will be published in a volume of the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. Watson Research Center, USA Call for Papers With the advancement of Services Computing technologies, most corporate and other institutions have been implementing service-oriented architectures and Web services, resulting in service-oriented transformation of enterprise information systems. This has led to a major shift in the way enterprise systems are developed and managed. For instance, major software development tools such as JDeveloper from Oracle, Visual Studio from Microsoft, and Eclipse from IBM have added new features to support planning, analysis, design, and implementation of service-oriented systems. However, the recent progress and efforts in industrial research and development have not been matched in intensity by academic research in modeling and management of service-oriented enterprise systems. As such, this special issue is to advocate more concerted efforts from the academia and industrial researchers. The movement towards Services Computing adoption for modernizing enterprise has appeared in a number of forms such as service-oriented architectures, software as a service, platform as a service, Web services, data center outsourcing, virtualization, and cloud computing, all of which should have a significant impact on research and education in enterprise systems. These new technologies and new business practices require new methods of modeling since the basic artifacts of system development are services and their relationships as opposed to objects in object-oriented programming and components in component-based software development. Furthermore, the realization of service-orientation in enterprise systems often starts with business processes that in turn help identify repeatable tasks that will use services. The implementation of services requires the development of new applications or integration with existing applications. The special issue welcomes original and cutting-edge theoretical and applied research that makes innovative contributions to the following general issues: (1) Rendering next-generation modeling methodologies, frameworks and processes useful for the development of service-oriented enterprise systems, (2) Investigating effective principles and techniques for developing enterprise services in real-world institutions, (3) Developing real world tools and systems that balance technical significance and business concerns in business processes and enterprise systems, and (4) Discussing trends and directions of next-generation enterprise system theories and applications. A domain in this context can be defined as an area of knowledge that uses common concepts for describing phenomena, requirements, problems, capabilities, and solutions. The purpose of domain engineering is to identify, model, construct, catalog, and disseminate artifacts that represent the commonalities and differences within a domain. Although being applicable to different engineering disciplines, domain engineering methods and domain specific languages (DSL) have been recently receiving special attention in the software engineering era. Some of the reasons for this interest are the increasing variability of applications, the need to obtain and share expertise in different, evolving domains, and the trend towards reusing software artifacts and knowledge about them. Domain engineering addresses two main layers: the domain layer, which deals with the representation of domain elements, and the application layer, which deals with the software applications and systems artifacts related to the domain. More specifically, the programs, applications, and systems are included in the application layer, whereas their common and variable characteristics, as can be described, for example, by patterns or emerging standards, are generalized and presented in the domain layer. Similarly to software engineering, domain engineering includes three main activities: domain analysis, domain design, and domain implementation, which are carried out in the domain layer. However, domain engineering also supports inter-layer activities, namely interactions that exist between the domain and application layers. Specifically, domain layer artifacts may be used for creation and validation of the specifications of application layer artifacts, while applications may be generalized into domain artifacts in a process of knowledge elicitation. Domain engineering as a discipline has practical significance as it deals with methods and techniques that may help reduce time-to-market, product cost, and projects risks on one hand, and improve product quality and performance on a consistent basis on the other hand. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners in the area of domain engineering in order to define the topic, identify possible points of synergy, common problems and solutions, and discuss visions for the future of the area. In particular, workshop will focus on the interaction between software engineering and domain engineering. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: � Methods and techniques to support domain engineering � Product line lifecycle engineering � Development and management of domain assets � Domain-driven software engineering � Testing, modeling, and formal verification of domain and application artifacts. � Application derivation (i.e., how to use domain artifacts in the application layer) � Variability management � Domain-specific languages, frameworks, and architectures � Domain engineering techniques in support of reuse, validation, and knowledge management � Theoretical and empirical evaluation of domain engineering methods and techniques � Case studies and practice reports related to domain engineering Submission Guidelines Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a paper related to the purpose of the workshop. The workshop will accept three types of submissions: 1. Completed Research � this type of papers should include evidence to support the contribution (e.g. in the form of data analysis, proof of concept, or case studies) and discussion on research findings and their theoretical and practical significance. The paper should not exceed 5,000 words (excluding references and appendices). Accepted completed research papers will be allocated 30 minutes for presentation (including questions & answers) during the workshop. 2. Research-In-Progress � this type of papers can report on research that is under way with preliminary results available at the time of the conference. The paper should not exceed 2,500 words (excluding references and appendices). Accepted research-in-progress papers will be allocated 15 minutes for presentation (including questions & answers) during the workshop. 3. Position papers � this type of papers can include lucid and well-supported statements and suggestions on domain engineering, e.g., directions for the discipline, open questions, criticism on the state-of-the-art, and novel approaches. Accepted position papers will be allocated 15 minutes for presentation (including questions & answers) during the workshop. All three types of papers may refer to theoretical and/or practical issues. Papers must conform to the ICSE 2009 format (see http://www.cs.uoregon.edu/events/icse2009/calls/format/). The paper type (completed research, research-in-progress, or a position paper) should explicitly be indicated after the paper title. In addition, the paper abstract should not be longer than 150 words. As the workshop will apply double-blind reviews process, the papers should not indicate their authors. However, the expectation of what this technology must deliver is a moving target. Whereas the success of coordinative processes depends upon the conformance to the prescribed control flow, the success of the collaborative process depends upon the ability to detect and react to changing conditions. What was true for workflow systems is no longer acceptable in the dynamic and cross organizational requirements for management of collaborative processes. The trend is going towards agile, responsive, and (self-)adaptive business processes which are able to make use of existing context information in order to align to changing business requirements. BPM has become a very extensive area with several specialized aspects. This workshop intends to provide a forum wherein challenges in flexible, context-aware, and collaborative business process management can be debated. We seek papers that present innovative technology solutions to these challenges based on well justified practical assumptions and sound theoretical foundations. Submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of significance, originality, technical quality, and exposition. Papers should clearly establish the research contribution, and relation to previous research. Position and survey papers are also welcome. Topics of interest -------------------------------- This year we particularly solicit approaches to context-aware, agile, responsive, and adaptive business processes. Below we provide a list of relevant topics, however papers outside these topics but within the general scope of the workshop scope will still be considered. - Context-aware business processes - Adaptive process management - Context modeling (e.g., ontologies, rule-based approaches) - Knowledge and task management in (collaborative) processes - Self-adapting / self-healing business processes - Technologies for modeling and analysis of (collaborative) processes - Interactive approaches for end-user engagement and visualization of business processes (can include Web 2.0) - Event driven process management - Collaboration modeling using game theory and/or social networks (wisdom of crowds) in Business Process Management - Usability and technology adoption of BPM solutions - Exception Handling in BPM - Patterns for context-aware BPM Format of the Workshop ------------------------------- The workshop will consist of oral presentations, discussions, and invited talks. The workshop will also provide opportunity for demo sessions, where presenters can showcase advanced prototypes based on their research. Submission of Papers ------------------------------- All papers must be written in English, and the length of the paper should not exceed 5,000 words or 10 pages (including figures and tables). Business processes not only integrates departments and subsidiaries of enterprises but also are extended across organizations and to interact with governments. On the other hand, wireless technologies and peer-to-peer networks enable ubiquitous access to services and information systems with scalability. This results in the removal of barriers of market expansion and new business opportunities as well as threats. In this new global and ubiquitous environment, it is of increasing importance to consider legal and social aspects in business activities and information systems that will provide some level of certainty. There is a broad spectrum of vertical domains where legal and social issues influence the design and development of information systems, such as web personalization and protection of users privacy in service provision, intellectual property rights protection when designing and implementing virtual works and multiplayer digital games, copyright protection in collaborative environments, automation of contracting and contract monitoring on the web, protection of privacy in location-based computing, etc. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together computer science researchers, engineers, policy makers and practitioners working at the state of the art on information and related fields such as legal domain, social sciences, and marketing. These web applications, mainly supported by Internet systems and services, are changing the traditional educational process not only in Higher Education (HE) qualifications, but also in open learning for any type of course. Thus understanding the cooperative and human aspects of software development is crucial to understanding how methods and tools are used, and thereby improving both the creation and maintenance of software. This issue is comprised of the following articles: ************************ The state of risk assessment practices in information security Jackie Rees Purdue University Jonathan Allen University of San Francisco Risk in Information Systems Security can be defined as a function of a given threat source�s exercising a particular vulnerability, and the resulting impact of that adverse event on the organization. Risk management is the process of identifying and assessing risk and taking steps to reduce it to an acceptable level, given the costs involved in doing so. The major activity within risk management is the risk assessment process. The objective of this research is to assess the current state of practice in conducting risk assessments for information security policy management. Results from an exploratory survey of U.S. headquartered firms indicate that increased frequency of conducting risk assessments, the use of quantitative measures of likelihood of loss, and more complete asset inventories correspond to higher levels of user satisfaction and perceived usefulness, although many companies choose not to do engage in this level of practice, or only go part way. Additionally, respondents reported substantial difficulty in identifying threats and estimating loss, indicating that much can be done to improve the current state of practice. Melville University of Michigan The phenomenon of unwanted commercial messages (UCM), including e-mail spam and emerging forms that target other internet communications facilities, is analyzed from an information-economics perspective. UCM traffic pays off for its senders when it is noticed and consumed by internet users, and the industry is, therefore, dependent on a common-pool resource that is accessed through an information asset. An analytical model of the industry is derived and solved computationally, and two dimensions of information quality held by the senders of UCM traffic are manipulated in the model. It is shown that such manipulations can moderate over time both the number of UCM campaigns undertaken and the amount of internet bandwidth consumed by UCM. Manipulations of the information quality dimensions affected by e-mail filtering reduce the amount of traffic that penetrates an internet user�s attention space but actually increase the amount of internet bandwidth consumed. This is consistent with data reported by e-mail security providers as filters have been deployed. It is also shown that both public and private entities have adopted policies and practices with unintentional informational side effects. These effects may have led to more, rather than less, spam e-mail traffic. It is concluded that the lessons learned from the case of e-mail spam can be applied to the development of policies and practices for mitigating newer, emerging forms of UCM, including versions targeting instant-messaging systems and web logs. Several kinds of architectures have evolved to support this kind of information system. Even though, a recent survey has shown that online shopping behavior is not altered by installing these systems in a web site, enormous money is being spent to use them in web sites. These commercial personalization engines are very expensive to buy and are proprietary in nature. One alternative advocated in this paper is to use a new architecture that follows an open source philosophy and uses a SPIN-based question-answering strategy to interact with the visitors. An implementation (called JESPER, a Jess-enabled Personalization system) of such an architecture using JESS (Java-based Expert System Shell) is also presented. Our experience shows that the personalization engines built this way for a web site can be quite cheap and rigorous.
