mandatory for a better comprehension on how ontologies are used in real
use case (how does ontologies perform in practice ? What is the
benefit/drawbacks for the software architect(s) using them ? What is the
benefit for the user(s) ? What are their limitations ? etc.).
OntoAPP is a unique chance to make people interested in knowledge-based
systems meet, from theoretical aspects to applied research project.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
___________________________________________________
- Knowledge based systems (KBS)
- Use cases and feed backs on the usage of ontologies in specific domains
- Evaluation of KBS
- Querying of KBS
- Ontologies integration
- Common mistakes in ontologies design

*About the Conference*
======================
The CSE (International Conference on Computational Science and Engineering)
conference previously was held mainly as the International Workshop on High
Performance Scientific and Engineering Computing for tenth editions, mostly
in conjunction with International Conference on Parallel Processing (ICPP),
as COATA-98 (Orlando, USA, July, 1998), HPSEC-99 (Fukushima, Japan, September
1999), HPSEC-00 (Toronto, Canada, August, 2000), HPSEC-01 (Valencia, Spain,
September, 2001), HPSEC-02 (Vancouver, Canada, August, 2002), HPSEC-03
(Kaohsing, Taiwan, October, 2003), HPSEC-04 (Montreal, Canada, August, 2004),
HPCSE-04 with WCC-04 (Toulouse, France, August, 2004), HPSEC-05 (Oslo, Norway,
June, 2005), and HPSEC-06 (Columbus, USA, August, 2006).
After many successful editions, this conference will be organized independently
starting in 2008, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This Conference is sponsored by IEEE
TCSC Technical Committee on Scalable Computing and IEEE Computer Society.
*About Sao Paulo, Brazil*
=========================
Sao Paulo, the 19a richest city of the world, is officially inserted in a larger
metropolitan region which holds 39 towns in total, and a population of more than
19 million inhabitants (2005). It is one of the biggest financial centers of
Brazil and the world. Its economy is going through a deep transformation. Once
a city with a strong industrial character, Sao Paulo's economy has become
increasingly based on the tertiary sector, focusing on services and businesses
for the country.
Sao Paulo is located on a plateau, part of the vast region known as the Brazilian
Highlands, with an average elevation of around 800 metres (2,625 ft) above sea
level - though at a distance of only about 70 kilometers (43 mi) from the Atlantic
Ocean. This distance is covered by two highways, the Anchieta and the Imigrantes,
that roll down the range, leading to the portuary city of Santos and the beach
resort of Guaruja. Rolling terrain prevails within the urbanized areas of Sao Paulo
but in the North of the city - where the Serra da Cantareira Range boasts higher
elevations and a sizable remnant of the Atlantic Rain Forest.

====================================================================================
INGRID 2008
3rd International Workshop on Distributed Cooperative Laboratories:
Instrumenting the Grid
April 9-11, 2008
Lacco Ameno, Island of Ischia, Italy
====================================================================================
The possibility to perform measurement tasks and
experiments on complex telelaboratory
structures is gaining momentum as a relevant aspect in a number of areas,
from scientific and technological research, to
environmental monitoring, to distance
learning and training.
Grid architectures (or, more generally, Service
Oriented Architectures SOA), viewed
as tools for the integration of distributed
resources, play a significant role, not only as
managers of computational resources, but
increasingly as aggregators of measurement
instrumentation and pervasive large-scale data
acquisition platforms. In this context,
the functionality of a grid architecture allows
managing, maintaining and exploiting
heterogeneous instrumentation and acquisition
devices in a unified way, by providing
standardized interfaces and common work
environments to their users. This is achieved
through the properties of isolation from the
physical network and from the peculiarities
of the instrumentation, granted by standard
middleware, together with secure and
flexible mechanisms to seek, access, and aggregate distributed resources.
The 1st Workshop in this series was held in
Sorrento, Italy, in July 2005, within the
framework of the International Tyrrhenian
Workshop on Digital Communications. It was
devoted to the investigation of the main issues
related to the sustainable realization
of tele-laboratories, where real and virtual
instrumentation can be shared and used in a
collaborative environment. The second workshop
was held in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy, in April 2006.
The current edition of the Workshop focuses on all aspects related to the
effective exploitation of remote instrumentation on the Grid. These include
middleware architecture, high-speed networking in support of Grid
applications, wireless Grid for acquisition devices and sensor networks,
Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning for real-time control, measurement
instrumentation and methodology.
The Workshop will be structured in technical
sessions, some of which will be organized
by leading researchers in the field, and will
accommodate both invited and regular
papers, selected on an open-call basis. The
technical program will also include a poster
session, where presentations will refer to short
papers reporting prominent - but still in
progress - research work.
All submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least
three members of the International
Program Committee.
Contributions are solicited on all advanced
research issues concerning the theme
of the Workshop, and particularly in (but not limited to) the following topics:
Service Oriented Architectures (SOA)
Grid architectures with real-time control
Grid middleware extensions for remote control of instruments and devices
Resource Management
Tele-measurement techniques
Metrology issues in distributed systems
Distributed synchronization and calibration
Workflow management for large-scale experiments
Virtualization technology
Visualization techniques
Distributed data acquisition and sensor networks
Management of large data sets
Mobile and wireless grids
Management of large-scale physics experiments
Networking solutions in support of Grid architectures
Reliability and fault tolerance
Supporting interactive applications in the grid environment
Collaborative environments for the Grid

3rd Special Track on Ontologies for Biomedical Systems for
21st IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems
http://cbms08.biomap.org/
Call for Papers
Biomedical Ontologies have developed in an uncoordinated way, often
reflecting mere relations of 'association' between what are called
'concepts', and serving primarily the purposes of information extraction
from on-line biomedical literature and databases. In recent years, we have
learned a great deal about the criteria which must be satisfied if ontology
is to allow true information integration and automatic reasoning across data
and information derived from different sources. The goal of this track is to
survey existing biomedical ontologies and reform them in such a way as to
allow true information integration in biomedical domain. Authors are invited
to submit original papers exploring the theories, techniques, and
applications of biomedical ontologies. Papers are invited (but not limited)
to the following themes:
* Biomedical Ontologies for Genetics, Proteomics, Diseases, Privacy etc.
* Conceptual Models for Biological and Medical Data
* Semantics in Biological Data Modeling
* Use of semantics to manage Interoperation in Biomedical Databases
* Semantic Web technologies and formalisms for Biomedical Data
* Ontology representation and exchange languages for bioinformatics
* Biomedical Ontologies and OWL
* Biological Data Integration and Management using Ontologies
* Biomedical Data Engineering using Ontologies
* Application of Biomedical Ontologies for Heterogeneous Database Access
* Query Optimization Techniques for Biomedical Database using Ontologies
* Support of Ontologies for Biological Information Retrieval and Web
Services
* Change Management in Biomedical Ontologies
* Tools for Development and Management of Biomedical Ontologies
