DEADLINE: 10 April 2007
Hotel Sofitel, San Francisco Bay
6-8 September 2007
Organized by
Knowledge Systems Institute
Digital Arts and Sciences Lab, UF
Visual Computing Lab, UT-Dallas
SCOPE AND TOPICS
================
Visual computing involves theory, methods and
application of enhancing the visual space,
along with human interaction, within the field
of computing. One may visualize unstructured
data, simple information structures, and more
complicated structures such as automata,
programs, and databases. Moreover, visual
computing is a field that involves
representation of artifacts and their
behaviors or executions. Thus, it is possible
to visualize heaps, their execution or entire
programs in which the heap plays an
algorithmic role. The ways in which the human
interacts with the heap through pure
visualization, touch, or sound becomes a
relevant issue. The concept of transformation
is integral to visual computing, where it is
often convenient to transform one type of
object into another sometimes for a specific
group or individual.
Aspects of visual computing are multi-facetted
in goals that are to be achieved during
information or language design. The following
represents a short list of qualities that are
of importance to the study within visual
computing: efficiency, aesthetics, pleasure,
emotion, engagement, immersion, collaboration,
and culture. Aspects of art, engineering, and
science play key roles where certain
practitioners focus on design and engineering
of visual interactions whereas others analyze
and study these interactions (i.e., science).
The International Workshop on Visual Languages
and Computing will explore these issues, and
will be held in conjunction with the 2007
International Conference of Distributed
Multimedia Systems
(http://www.ksi.edu/seke/dms07.html) to be
held in San Francisco Bay Area, USA.
6-8 September 2007. Papers on all aspects and
approaches to visual languages and computing
are solicited, including interactive visual
computing, computer-empowered visual computing,
human-empowered visual computing,
transformation algorithms for visual computing,
and visual languages for visual computing. The
following topics are of special interest:
o Visual Languages

Special Issue on
Grid Economics and Business Models
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
With Featured Articles on:
- "Grid Economics" by Ramayya Krishnan (CMU, USA)
- "Business Models for Grids and Utility Computing" by Rajkumar Buyya
(University of Melbourne, Australia)
- "Service Science" by Jim Spohrer (IBM Almaden, USA)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Journal of Grid Computing will publish a special issue on Grid Economics
and Business Models, which has also been a theme of some very active
workshops on several IEEE conferences lately.
In Grid Computing systems heterogeneous networked resources are utilized.
Computational resources, storage, memory and bandwidth are complemented with
content-oriented input from databases and web services. Hence such systems
may operate in predefined and centrally organized ways, or coordination may
be conducted in a self-organized, decentral manner.
Although there are plenty of idle computing resources available on the
internet, only a small percentage of these are actually utilized. One of the
reasons for this could be a lack of reliability, availability, quality of
service and security.
Substantial work has been done on protocols, middleware, and services for
security, discovery, sharing, management etc., of computing, storage, data
and other resources within dynamic, distributed computing systems. Little
attention has been dedicated to the economically efficient allocation of
such resources, the embedding of common pricing and business schemes with
content provision, as well as the generation of business models based on
Grid utilization.
Lately, several initiatives have started in order to generate substantial
approaches in this area. The topic has emerged to become a key research
topic in the domain of applying Grid technology in commercial applications
such as service oriented architectures (SOA) and web services. Such
approaches are fostering a wider commercial adoption of existing
research-grade Grid computing systems in the services domain and enable
completely novel business models in future.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Topics for this special issue include, but are not limited to:
- Grid Economics
o Engineering of Grid markets and Grid architectures
o Economic resource allocation in Grid scenarios
o Resource allocation in Grid scenarios
o Environment descriptions and economic metrics for Grids
o Simulation of Grid markets
o Economics of Grid standardization
o Grid systems¹ economy, its operation and deployment
- Business Models for Grids and Utility Computing
o Automated negotiation for Grid resource allocation
o Pricing, charging and accounting issues of Grid resources
o Suggestion for commercialization strategies for Grid approaches
o Business application development for Grid services
o Economic and business mechanisms in national computational Grid
systems
o Agent-based simulation of Grid environments and markets
- Service Science
o Engineering of eOrganizations
o Computational and content services in Web 2.0
o Multi-tier offers: Computing and web services
o Pricing and billing in service oriented architectures (SOA)
o Evaluation of dynamic pricing and trading mechanisms for Grid and
content resources
o Generation of knowledge in complex decision situations in Grid
allocation

3rd VLDB Workshop on Data Management in Grids
---------------------------------------------
http://www.irit.fr/~Jean-Marc.Pierson/DMG_VLDB07/
Collocated with VLDB 2007 : http://www.vldb.org
Vienna, Austria, 24-25 September 2007
Topics of Interest
------------------
This workshop is the third workshop organized at VLDB on the topic
of Data Management in Grids. After the success of the first two
editions for the one day workshop in 2005 and 2006, we decided to
propose a third edition in Vienna, 2007.
Since the mid nineties and the emergence of Grids, many research
activities have been initiated in relation to data management in
these dynamic, heterogeneous and cross-organisational environments.
The database community can offer her unique expertise in the
management of very large, widely distributed databases. Conversely,
Grids offer a novel and very exciting field of research for
database scientists both in terms of application domains and
fundamental research.
This workshop is intended to bring together these two communities,
and thus to offer a unique workspace for researchers to discuss and
exchange ideas about the emerging challenges and opportunities
offered by Data Grids. The first workshops raised interesting
questions on the data management, and its particularities in a Grid.
Relevant topics for the workshop include all aspects related to the
management of data in a Grid (non-exhaustive list) :
Data Access
Data Interoperability
Semantic Grids
Mediation / Negotiation
Security: access control, policy, privacy
Data Placement: replication, migration
Data Streams
Metadata Management
Indexing
Query processing
Caching
Data Warehouses
Unique identification of data entities
Data Definition/Model Management
Data De-identification
Data scheduler and data-aware scheduling
Information sharing
Information dissemination
Applications dealing with large databases
Data management in Pervasive Grids
Submission

For students, the hostel from about $50 may be organized on special request.
Visa Issues
To come to Russia, all foreign participants will need an entering visa. As a host institution SPIIRAS will
handle this issue through a formal invitation letter to every participant.
To issue such a letter, we shall need the following details to include in the above letter for every individual:
first name, middle name, surname, date of birth, citizenship, passport No., expiration date
(as appear in a valid passport) and the city where the visa is applied in.
In addition, each individual has to fax copy of the first page of his/her passport at +7(812)328-06-85
containing personal data and dates of the passport number and expiry date.
Note that about one month is required only to arrange formal invitation in St. Petersburg. Time for invitation
mailing to the addressee and for getting visa at local consulate has to be added to calculate the deadline to be
met for receiving request for invitation letter by organizers.

[[[[ LAST CALL FOR PAPERS ]]]]
ECAL 2007 Workshop on Machine Epigenesis
Lisbon, Portugal
September 10, 2007
[[Motivation]]
Creating a machine that exhibits life-like behavior has been the very
core motivation of Artificial Life since its onset. Self-replication
has remained the prime study since von Neumann, however, biological
systems show a far wider range of generative hehavior, including
differentiation and morphogenesis of multicellular structures from a
single zygote, and adaptive de-differentiation and regeneration of
parts in case of system failure. These characters remain largely
missing in manmade, engineered systems, as well indicated by the late
John Maynard-Smith in his writing:
"One reason why we find it so hard to understand the development of
form may be that we do not make machines that develop: often we
understand biological phenomena only when we have invented machines
with similar properties... [and] we do not make 'embryo' machines ..."
- John Maynard-Smith, The Problems of Biology (1986)
[[Workshop]]
The Workshop on Machine Epigenesis aims to address this issue -- the
means, methods and models of machine epigenesis. It is expected to
establish a field of research on any constructional and epigenetic
processes of machines and to initiate a collective effort of
formalization of models of such epigenetic machines. Here a "machine"
is broadly construed to include abstract automata, electro-mechanical
devices, molecular structures, and any other physical or informational
instantiation. Topics to be covered in the workshop include (but are
not limited to):
- Formal theories and abstract models of machine epigenesis
- Theories of universal and non-universal constructors
- Physical implementation of epigenetic machines
- Self-replicating and self-repairing machines
- Self-organization in modular and swarm robots
- Biological analogs relevant to the realization of machine epigenesis
- Philosophical and ethical issues in creating epigenetic machines
- Extending the mechanist model of living systems - philosophy
[[Format]]
The workshop will be organized to provide an open opportunity for
participation by any person engaged in relevant research, or who may
have relevant opinion, all presented within the framework of an open
forum discussion. During the discussion each submitted paper will be
briefly presented in an informal setting (typically in 5~10 minutes)
and then examined and debated. While the debate will take place
between those researchers who submit papers, audience participation
will be facilitated, primarily through comments and questions.
[[paper Submission]]
Readers are invited to submit a paper on original research or
discussion on any aspect of machine epigenesis. Papers should be
formatted following the guidelines for the ECAL 2007 proceedings
(http://www.ecal2007.org/submissions.htm). Papers should not exceed
10 pages in length and must be made in PDF format.
Papers should be submitted electronically by email addressed to both
the program chairs. Submitted papers will be reviewed and judged by
the Programme Committee members based on their relevance to the
workshop and conference, originality, clarity of the presentation, and
overall quality.
[[Important Dates]]
Paper submission deadline: April 9, 2007
Notification of acceptance: May 14, 2007
Camera-ready submissions: May 31, 2007
[[Proceedings]]
Accepted papers will be included in the Workshop Proceedings CD-ROM
that will be distributed to all ECAL 2007 attendees. It is also
expected that workshop participants shall have the opportunity to
publish a paper in a special issue of the International Journal of
Unconventional Computing. Confirmation from the journal is pending.

*** CALL FOR PAPERS ***
4th High-End Visualization Workshop
University Center Obergurgl, Tyrol, Austria
17.06. - 22.06.2007
http://www.vizworkshop.at/
Open issues in visualization with special concentration on applications
in astrophysics, numerical relativity, computational fluid dynamics and
high-performance computing.
This year's feature:
Visualization of Non-Trivial Data Structures
With the advancement of numerical simulations beyond uniform grids,
visualization methods are also challenged to cope with the more complex
data structures. We intend to discuss which data structures are out there
(e.g., amr, multiblock, multipatches), what visualization methods already
exist, and what the highest demands and needs for yet unsolved issues are.
Focus is intended to be on topological issues of complex data sets, leading
to possible overlap among feature extraction, numerical algorithms and
access methods to topologically non-trivial data itself.
This workshop is inter-disciplinary by nature, and as every year we also
encourage contributions that are outside the focus topic.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
* Visualization concepts for non-trivial spacetimes
* Generic data structures for visualization purposes
* Applicability of GPU's, emerging hardware like cell processors
or physics cards
* Application areas, in particular interdisciplinary work with
domain experts
* Numerical models on adaptive meshes or multiblocks and resulting
specific demands for visualization
* Existing visualization frameworks (e.g., VTK, Amira, Chombovis) and
their support for such data
* Extending commonly used visualization techniques such as isosurfaces
and raycasting to cover complex data structures
* Demands and constraints on parallel rendering strategies and grid-based
environments from non-regular domain decomposition, including (but not
limited to) workflow managements, brokering, performance-modeling etc.
* Utilizing modern rendering, display and interaction device, e.g.
high-resolution, high-dynamic range, multitiled screens, for examining
complex data structures
* Grid technologies and parallelization techniques
