Bioinformatics has already become an ideal research area for computer scientists, mathematicians and biologists to manage, analyze, and interpret functional information from biological data, sequences and structures. Sophisticated computer system theories and computing algorithms have been exploited or emerged in the general area of computer mathematics, such as analysis of algorithms, artificial intelligence, automata, computational complexity, computer security, concurrency and parallelism, data structures, knowledge discovery, DNA and quantum computing, randomisation, semantics, symbol manipulation, numerical analysis and mathematical software, etc. This special issue aims to bridge the gap between computer mathematics and bioinformatics. We believe that computer mathematics would provide powerful tools for analyzing, predicting, and understanding data from gene expression, drug design and other emerging genomic and proteomic technologies. In this special issue, we encourage papers on novel computer-based mathematical theories or algorithms (e.g., classification, regression, clustering, probabilistic learning, inductive logic programming, reinforcement learning) with specific applications in bioinformatics. Topics include, but are not limited to: (1) Effective data mining techniques: clustering, Bayesian networks, evolutionary computation, neural networks, pattern/outlier detection and analysis, case-based reasoning, personalisation, and statistical pattern recognition, etc. (2) Temporal reasoning: applications of intelligent data analysis in bio-signal processing, interpretation of time-ordered data (derivation and revision of temporal trends and other forms of temporal data abstraction) (3) Information visualization: visualization of biological data and visualization of the results from intelligent data analysis (4) Construction of decision models to support decision making. (5) Dynamical gene network modelling, short time series analysis. Submission and Review Process Interested authors please submit an abstract (one-page maximum) of your paper to Dr. Zidong Wang (Zidong.Wang(a)brunel.ac.uk), addressing which computer-based mathematical theory or algorithm is used on which bioinformatics problem. A popular application of data mining across industries is customer analytics, where the goal is to understand customers and better service those customers, whether this is through marketing, stock management, or fraud discovery. The Australasian Data Mining Conference has established itself as the premier Australasian meeting for both practitioners and researchers in data mining. AusDM02, AusDM03, AusDM04 and AusDM05 have showcased research in data mining, providing a forum for presenting and discussing the latest research and developments. However, we miss a wide use of Semantic Web technologies on personal computers. The use of Ontologies, metadata annotations, and semantic web protocols on desktop computers will allow the integration of desktop applications and the web, enabling a much more focused and integrated personal information management as well as focused information distribution and collaboration on the Web beyond sending emails. The goal is an open personal information management system and collaborative infrastructure based on Semantic Web technology build into the operating system of current machines. Collaboration, acquisition and dissemination infrastructures like Wikis and Blogs are providing the foundation for joint collaborative knowledge creation and are essentially simplified knowledge acquisition tools. Social Software maps the social connections between different people into the technical infrastructure. Online Social Networking enables collaboration relationships as first class citizens, and allows exploiting these relationships for automated information distribution and classification. P2P and Grid computing develops technology to interconnect large communities without centralized infrastructures for data and computation sharing, which is necessary to build heterogeneous, multi-organizational collaboration networks. The application of the mentioned technologies, especially in combination with the Semantic Web, to the desktop computer in order to improve personal information management and collaboration is the main topic of this workshop. Workshop on GridGIS: the fertilisation of Grid computing and Geographic Information System Call for Paper The 2006 International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing and Applications (ISPA 2006) (http://www.ispa-conference.org/2006 or www.ispa06.unina2.it) will be held at Sorrento, Italy, December 1 - 4, 2006. It is sponsored by Second University of Naples in cooperation with IEEE Computer Society TCSC. Aim of the workshop The development of GIS sciences and technologies motivate the concern of the next generation of GIS, including multi-resources distributed, high-performance computation and data transfer, and collaborative platform of virtual organization for multiple end users. Grid technology offers the prospect of enabling new kinds of applications and new ways of working in the area of Geographic Information Science. GridGIS can be defined as a science at the intersection (crossing) of Grid computing and Geographic information System. It is characterised by modern Grid computing technology by information sharing, between geographically distributed sites and by real-time decision. This workshop aims to provide a forum for examining the state of the art of GridGIS. The main objectives of this workshop are the definitions of theoretical and conceptual fundamentals of GridGIS, the description of applications and the related common fundamentals problems occurring and the determination and research proposal directions to improve the understanding and applications of GridGIS. It also provides a venue for scientists to network with their peers working in similar fields. The main subjects of discussion and exchange will be, but are not limited to: § Definition and Architecture of GridGIS, including spatial information Grid theories and technologies, etc. § Middleware for GridGIS, which includes resource management middleware, task management middleware, user management middleware, login management middleware, message management middleware, security middleware, duplicate management middleware, error disposal middleware, and log management middleware, etc. § Algorithms in GridGIS, including cooperative computing of spatial information, parallel, distributed, and intelligent data processing algorithms, etc. § Security of GridGIS § Integration of remote sensing, Global Positioning System (GPS) with GridGIS § Data access service, metadata management and information service § Applications of GridGIS, including online spatial decision support system, Location Based Service, telegeoprocessing, telemonitoring, Digital Earth, public emergency prevention and monitoring, etc. Invitation to Submit a Paper We invite you to submit a paper to the workshop on GridGIS. Submissions should include abstract, key words, the e-mail address of the corresponding author, and must not exceed 15 pages, including tables and figures, with PDF, PostScript, or MS Word format. Electronic submission through the submission website is strongly encouraged. Submission of a paper should be regarded as a commitment that, should the paper be accepted, at least one of the authors will register and attend the conference to present the work. Jan van Leeuwen General Chair ================= DETAIL INFORMATION ======================== Foundations of Computer Science Track -------------------------------------------- At the heart of Computer Science Foundations lie many areas, including algorithms and data structures, computational complexity, cryptography, program semantics and verification, automata theory, and the study of randomness. Work in this field is distinguished by its emphasis on mathematical techniques and rigor but it is often of significant impact on practical applications and systems. Those subjects have traditionally received a lot of attention at the SOFSEM conference, since its birth in 1974. All contributions to the Foundations of Computer Science are solicited, and contributions that illustrate the value of fundamental research for fielded applications are especially welcome. Suggested topics are listed on the conference web site. ========================================================== Multi-agent Systems Track ------------------------------ In order to reason about systems of larger and larger complexity, it makes sense to take the `intentional view' and formally describe such systems in terms of their beliefs, desires, intentions, goals, preferences and decisions. This has given rise to many theories and models of rational agents, both in Artificial Intelligence and in Computer Science. Agents not only manipulate a physical or digital environment, but they are also social beings: agents typically engage with other agents, be it human or artificial. Interactions between agents can be competitive or cooperative, but is usually a mix of the two. Moreover, agents can build a model of other agents to be utilised in a next meeting. In the current millennium there is an overwhelming amount of work on the borders between game or decision theory and that of multi-agent systems which analyses when, how, why and at which costs coalitions of agents will emerge (or should, by imposing social laws!), and how such coalitions interact with each other. The track is devoted to recent research on these themes. Suggested topics are listed on the conference web site. ========================================================== Emerging Web Technologies Track --------------------------------------- The World Wide Web has revolutionized the way we conduct research, business, and entertainment. Web-based social networks are thriving, thanks to the new concepts, technologies and web infrastructures. Search engines prove to be great tools for exploring and accessing the heterogeneous information of billions of web pages and they continue to improve in quality. Multimedia search engines make multimedia data available to anyone, anywhere, any time and in any way. At the same time, it becomes more and more complex to distinguish accurate from inaccurate or untrustworthy information. With the new web services this has become an even greater problem as web services themselves require automated ways of trusting each other. The Semantic Web offers assistance, by annotating Web resources in a machine-readable form, enabling computers to search, process, integrate and present the content of the Web. We solicit novel research contributions on all emerging Web technologies. Suggested topics are listed on the conference web site. =========================================================== Dependable Software and Systems Track ----------------------------------------------- With the growing domain of application of software systems, the possible impact of a failure asks for strengthening the reliability of software systems. While formal specifications of desired properties, together with automated tools for verifying the properties, are expected to solve this problem, many issues in this field remain open, ranging from selecting the kind of properties that should be specified, to developing theories in which such properties are decidable and reasoning is computationally feasible. A particular issue is developing specification languages which would be reasonably easy to learn and use, and which would allow formal methods to become widely used. This track is focused on these topics crucial for developing dependable software systems.
