EURASIP Journal on Applied Signal Processing
Special Issue on
Image Perception
Call for Papers
Perception is a complex process that involves brain activities at different
levels. The availability of models for the representation and interpretation
of the sensory information opens up new research avenues that cut across
neuroscience, imaging, information engineering, and modern robotics.
The goal of the multidisciplinary field of perceptual signal processing
is to identify the features of the stimuli that determine their perception,
namely a single unified awareness derived from sensory processes while a
stimulus is present, and to derive associated computational models that
can be generalized.
In the case of vision, the stimuli go through a complex analysis chain
along the so-called visual pathway, starting with the encoding by the
photoreceptors in the retina (low-level processing) and ending with cognitive
mechanisms (high-level processes) that depend on the task being performed.
Accordingly, low-level models are concerned with image representation
and aim at emulating the way the visual stimulus is encoded by the early
stages of the visual system as well as capturing the varying sensitivity
to the features of the input stimuli; high-level models are related to
image interpretation and allow to predict the performance of a human
observer in a given predefined task.
A global model, accounting for both such bottom-up and top-down approaches,
would enable the automatic interpretation of the visual stimuli based on both
their low-level features and their semantic content.
Among the main image processing fields that would take advantage of such
models are feature extraction, content-based image description and retrieval,
model-based coding, and the emergent domain of medical image perception.
The goal of this special issue is to provide original contributions
in the field of image perception and modeling.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
o Perceptually plausible mathematical bases for the representation
of visual information (static and dynamic)
o Modeling nonlinear processes (masking, facilitation) and their
exploitation in the imaging field (compression, enhancement,
and restoration)
o Beyond early vision: investigating the pertinence and potential
of cognitive models (feature extraction, image quality)
o Stochastic properties of complex natural scenes (static, dynamic,
colored) and their relationships with perception
o Perception-based models for natural (static and dynamic) textures.
Theoretical formulation and psychophysical validation
o Applications in the field of biomedical imaging (medical image
perception)

HIS'05 is organized in cooperation with:
- IEEE- Computational Intelligence Society
Hybridization of intelligent systems is a promising research field of
computational intelligence focusing on synergistic combinations of
multiple approaches to develop the next generation of intelligent
systems. A fundamental stimulus to the investigations of Hybrid
Intelligent Systems (HIS) is the awareness that combined approaches
will be necessary if the remaining tough problems in artificial
intelligence are to be solved. Neural computing, machine learning,
fuzzy logic, evolutionary algorithms, agent-based methods, among
others, have been established and shown their strength and drawbacks.
Recently, hybrid intelligent systems are getting popular due to their
capabilities in handling several real world complexities involving
imprecision, uncertainty and vagueness.
HIS'05 builds on the success of previous HIS events: HIS'04 was held
in Kitakyushu, Japan, HIS'03 in Melbourne, Australia, HIS'02 in
Santiago, Chile, and HIS'01, the first event, in Adelaide, Australia.
All events attracted participants from over 30 countries. HIS'05 is,
therefore, the fifth International Conference that brings together
researchers, developers, practitioners, and users of soft computing,
computational intelligence, multi-agents, and several other
intelligent computing techniques. The objectives of this
international meeting are to increase the awareness of the research
community of the broad spectrum of hybrid techniques, to bring
together AI researchers from around the world to present their
cutting-edge results, to discuss the current trends in HIS research,
to develop a collective vision of future opportunities, to establish
international collaborative opportunities, and as a result to advance
the state of the art of the field.
HIS'05 invites authors to submit original and unpublished work that

TICL Call for Papers
Learning Objects and Pedagogy
How have learning objects impacted the practice of instruction? Are you
developing new learning objects, or developing instruction based on
existing learning objects? Are you doing research on the effectiveness
of a specific approach to using learning objects? Are you taking
learning objects where no learning objects have gone before? If the
answer to any of these questions is yes, we invite you to submit a paper
for a special issue of the Journal of Technology, Instruction,
Cognition, and Learning entitled, “Learning Objects and Pedagogy.”
The vision of this special issue is to document the current state of
knowledge in the area of the instructional use of learning objects.
Preference will be given to empirical studies, but many types of article
will be considered, including lessons learned based on actual experience
with learning objects, research into the effectiveness of different
designs and / or implementations of learning objects, and new
theoretical models for the innovative applications of learning objects.
A broad scope of articles will be considered, including “high end”
applications such as theory-based dynamic assembly of objects or
pedagogical agent-augmented objects, and “low end” applications such as
effective learning object use by teachers in public school classrooms.

The IEEE International Workshop on Heterogeneous Multi-Hop Wireless and
Mobile Networks 2005 (IEEE MHWMN'05)
To be held in conjunction with the 2nd IEEE International Conference
on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems (IEEE MASS 2005) Washington DC, USA,
November 7-11, 2005
AIM and SCOPE
-------------
The traditional centralized wireless and mobile networks are based on
single-hop architecture and rely on the existing fixed infrastructure
such as base stations or access points. The proliferation and deployment
of radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, and Wireless
PANs with distinguishing characteristics of data rate, coverage range,
power, mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and
ubiquitous access across these various networks. Such an integrated
heterogeneous environment enables a user to access a particular network
depending upon the application needs and the types of radio access networks
(RANs) available (e.g., cellular network, ad hoc, WLAN, WPAN etc). The
heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on the other hand,
provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but introduce a number
of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The design of efficient and
scalable protocols for existing multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such
as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue to pose challenges at all
the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate
a global heterogeneous architecture and services that together provide
seamless integration of single-hop networks (e.g., cellular, WLAN, WWAN)
and multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers
from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion
and technical presentations on the latest research and future research
directions in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks.
We are seeking original and previously unpublished research papers
addressing theoretical and application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop
wireless mobile networks.
TOPICS
------
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
-Multi-hop architectures and protocols for resource management
