Subject: CFP - Web Intelligence and Agent Systems: An International Journal
Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 14:45:49 -0500
From: Peter Brusilovsky <peterb(a)mail.sis.pitt.edu>
To: Gustaf.Neumann(a)wu-wien.ac.at
Dear colleague,
I am want to introduce a new journal that is especially relevant for
adaptive hypermedia community. Our community has grown up
considerably during the past 5 years and the last conference,
AH'2002, has shown a wealth of high-quality works that are ready to
be published in archival journals.
While there are a number of journals where an AH paper can be
published, only two journals in the past had offered a highly
relevant focus and an appreciative audience. Those who were concerned
with educational AH systems were considering Journal of AI and
Education (JAIED), and the rest of us were looking for User Modeling
and User-Adapted Interaction: The Journal of Personalization Research
(UMUAI). It looks like we have now a very attractive third choice for
the community - a new journal on Web Intelligence and Agent
Systems. As the other two journals, it does not focus on one single
particular technology or application area (i.e, AI, HCI, hypertext,
Web, education), but positions itself on the crossroads of these
fields. If you are planning a journal paper, please, consider the CFP
below. Naturally the two "earlier" journals are as good for an AH
paper as they used to be in the past - please, exercise your
judgement when selecting the one to proceed!
Happy Holidays,
Peter

WEB INTELLIGENCE AND AGENT SYSTEMS: An International Journal
------------------------------------------------------------
Publisher: IOS Press
ISSN 1570-1263
Home Page: http://wi-consortium.org/journal.html
WEB INTELLIGENCE AND AGENT SYSTEMS: An International Journal (WIAS) is
the official journal of the Web Intelligence Consortium (WIC). WIAS seeks
to collaborate with major societies and international conferences in the
fields. Presently, it has established a tie with the IEEE/WIC International
Conference on Web Intelligence (WI) and the IEEE/WIC International
Conference on Intelligent Agent Technology (IAT).
WIAS is a peer-reviewed journal, which publishes 4 issues a year, in
both electronic and hard copies.
WIAS aims to achieve a disciplinary balance between Web technology and
intelligent agent technology. It is committed to deepening the
understanding of computational, logical, cognitive, physical, and
social foundations as well as the enabling technologies for developing
and applying Web-based intelligence and autonomous agents systems.
The journal features high-quality, original research papers (including
state-of-the-art reviews), brief papers, and letters in all
theoretical and technology areas that make up the field of WIAS.
The papers should clearly focus on some of the following areas of
interest:
o Agent infrastructure and architecture
o Agent self-organization, learning, and adaptation
o Agent-based knowledge discovery
o Agent-mediated markets
o Autonomy-oriented or autonomic computing
o Cooperative problem solving
o Distributed intelligence and emergent behavior
o Emerging agent-based, Web-based systems and computing paradigms
o Evaluation and standards for agent-based Web intelligence technologies
o Grid computing technology
o Information ecology
o Knowledge management, networks, and communities
o Mediators and middleware
o Ontology engineering
o Personalization techniques
o Security issues in Web and agent systems
o Semantic Web, Web services and interoperability
o Ubiquitous computing and social intelligence
o Web information filtering and retrieval
o Web mining and farming
o Wisdom Web
Authors are invited to submit complete and original papers, which have
not been published elsewhere and are not currently under consideration
for another journal or conference.
All manuscripts for consideration must be submitted electronically
through an Electronic Submission Form, available from the Web
Intelligence Consortium (WIC) homepage at:
http://wi-consortium.org/journal.html

THE CONFERENCE
==============
Following the success of past conferences in this series (Lake District/UK,
Palisades/NY, and Heidelberg/Germany) and building upon the success of past
COOTS conferences, the 4th International Middleware Conference will be the
premier event for middleware research and technology in 2003. The scope of
the conference is the design, implementation, deployment, and evaluation
of distributed system platforms and architectures for future computing and
communication environments. Highlights of the conference include a
high-quality technical program, tutorials, invited speakers, poster
presentations, and workshops, all held in one of Brazil's most outstanding
areas of natural beauty.
The proceedings of Middleware'2003 will be published as a volume of the
Lecture Notes in Computer Science.
Conference topics include, but are not limited to:
* Distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) middleware platforms
* Reliable and fault-tolerant middleware platforms
* Support for multimedia in middleware platforms
* Novel quality of service (QoS) architectures and evaluation techniques
* Event-based, publish/subscribe and asynchronous middleware platforms
* Open architectures for reconfigurable middleware
* Adaptive and reflective middleware
* Middleware protocols and services for information assurance and security
* Formal Methods applied to middleware
* Management and use of component-based systems in distributed environments
* Applications of middleware technologies, including telematics and
e-commerce
* Novel paradigms, APIs, and languages for distributed systems
* Integration of middleware with model-integrated computing
architectures, such as OMG MDA
* Extensions and refinements to RM-ODP, CORBA, J2EE, .NET, etc.
* Impact of emerging Internet technologies and standards on middleware
platforms
* Integration of middleware platforms with Web services and Java
technologies
* Distributed systems management and interactive configuration and
development tools
* Issues of scalability in existing and new distributed systems platforms
* Engineering distributed systems in heterogeneous and mobile networks
* Middleware for ubiquitous and mobile computing
