SCOPE
The WWW is facing a phenomenal growth in mobile access devices,
embedded internet systems, ad-hoc interaction and wireless
networking as the key enablers for the next generation internet
Technological progress in mobile communication, wireless appliances
and the respective mobile services lets us hypothesize that the
future embedded WWW will be a digital environment that is
implicitly aware of the presence of users, sensitive, adaptive
and responsive to user needs, habits and emotions and ubiquitously
accessible, mostly via natural interaction.
The Mobility and Wireless Access Track of WWW2002 solicits papers
dealing with mobile computing and wireless access technologies that
fertilate the evolution of a WWW that is based on seamless access,
awareness, intelligence, and natural interaction. Seamless access
refers to a situation in which we are surrounded by a multitude of
wirelessly interconnected embedded systems, mostly invisible and
hidden in the background of our workplace, home, or outdoor
environment. Awareness refers to the ability of the system to
recognise and localise objects as well as people and their
intentions in a non-obtrusive and implicit way. Intelligence
refers the ability of the digital environment to adapt itself to
the people that live in it, learn from their behaviour, and
possibly recognise intent and habit. Natural interaction
finally refers to advanced modalities like natural speech- and gesture
recognition, as well as speech-synthesis, which will allow to
"operate" the WWW in a much more human-like communication style.
CALL-FOR-PAPERS
Technical papers (maximum 15 pages) describing original, previously
unpublished, completed research, not currently under review by
another conference or journal, are solicited on the following
topics:
Mobile/wireless computing architectures
Integration of wired and wireless networks

********************************
REFEREED PAPER SUBMISSIONS
DUE 13 NOV 2001
********************************
The 2002 International World Wide Web Conference will be held 7-11 May
2002 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Eleventh in the series of prestigious
international WWW conferences, WWW2002 will be the year's premier
conference related to the Web with significant participation from both
academia and industry. The International WWW Conference Series is managed
by the International World Wide Web Conference Committee (IW3C2) which is
organizing WWW2002 with the University of Hawaii and the Pacific
Telecommunications Council. The WWW Consortium (W3C) and IFIP Working
Group 6.4 on Internet Applications Engineering are WWW2002 conference
partners.
This conference covers key technical areas related to the Web. The main
refereed paper section of the conference consists of ten tracks including
applications, browsers and user interfaces, electronic commerce and
security, hypermedia, languages, mobility and wireless access, multimedia,
performance, searching, querying, indexing, and crawling, and semantic
Web. The semantic Web track is new for this year and highlights the
growing importance of this field. Refereed paper proceedings will be
published by ACM. Papers for the refereed track must be submitted on-line
13 NOV 2001 to be considered.
In addition to the main refereed paper tracks, there are a set of
alternate tracks covering a variety of areas including education, global
community, telehealth, practice and experience, and Web engineering. The
conference also includes Poster presentations of breaking work,
preconference Tutorials and Workshops, and a post-conference Developers
Day specially for web developers. The W3C Advisory Committee will meet
just before WWW2002, and W3C will participate actively in the conference
through the informative and timely W3C Track.
Hawaii's mid-Pacific location and multi-cultural heritage underlie a
physical and social accessibility that make it one of the finest and most
affordable major cities for drawing together colleagues from the Americas,
Asia, Europe, the Pacific and Africa. Well-known for its natural beauty,
temperate climate and visitor attractions, Hawaii's suitability as a venue
for international meetings, business and technology has been all too often
overshadowed by its more common reputation as an extraordinary resort
destination.

Third Call for Papers
DIAGRAMS 2002
Second International Conference
on
Theory and Application of Diagrams
Callaway Gardens & Resort, Georgia, USA
April 18-20, 2002
http://kogs-www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/~d2k2/
Important: Abstracts due this week
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Diagrams" is an international and interdisciplinary conference series
on the theory and application of diagrams in any scientific field of
enquiry. From early human history, diagrams have been pervasive in
human communication. The recent rise of multimedia technology that has
turned advanced visual communication into an integral part of our
everyday reality makes a better understanding of the role of diagrams
and sketches in communication, cognition, creative thought, and
problem-solving a necessity. These developments have triggered a new
surge of interest in the study of diagrammatic notations, which is
driven by several different scientific disciplines concerned with
cognition, computation and communication.
The study of diagrammatic communication as a whole must be pursued as
an interdisciplinary endeavor. "Diagrams 2002" is the second event in
this conference series, which was successfully launched in Edinburgh
in September 2000. It attracts a large number of researchers from
virtually all academic fields that are studying the nature of
diagrammatic representations, their use in human communication, and
cognitive or computational mechanisms for processing diagrams. By
combining several earlier workshop and symposia series that were held
in the US and Europe [Reasoning with Diagrammatic Representations
(DR), US; Thinking with Diagrams (TWD), Europe; Theory of Visual
Languages (TVL), Europe], "Diagrams" has emerged as a major
international conference on this topic. It is the only conference that
provides a united forum for all areas that are concerned with the
study of diagrams: architecture, artificial intelligence, cartography,
cognitive science, computer science, education, graphic design,
history of science, human-computer interaction, linguistics,
philosophical logic, and psychology, to name a few.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- computational models of reasoning with and interpretation of
diagrams
- diagram understanding by humans or machines
- diagram usage in scientific discovery
- formalization of diagrammatic notations
- history of diagrammatic languages and notations
- interactive graphical communication
- novel uses of diagrammatic notations
- psychological issues pertaining to perception, comprehension, and
production of diagrams
- reasoning with diagrammatic representations
- role of diagrams in applied areas such as visualization
- spatial information and diagrams
- usability issues concerning diagrams
"Diagrams 2002" will consist of technical sessions with presentations
of refereed papers, posters and tutorial sessions. The tutorials will
provide introductions to diagram research in various disciplines in
order to foster a lively interdisciplinary exchange.
We invite submissions of tutorial proposals, full research papers and
extended abstracts of posters. All submissions will be fully peer
reviewed and accepted papers and posters will be published in the
conference proceedings. Further information and submission details
will be available from the conference web site:

THEME JUSTIFICATION:
IS/IT field has a rich set of research streams. One of these, Decision
Making Support Systems (DMSS), it has focused in doing research about how
IS/IT can be deployed to support all the phases of decision making
process. Despite this field has around 30 years old, new research
threads have emerged in the last years.
This issue addresses the state of the art of DMSS because these require a
variety of advanced IS/IT to enhance the design, development, utilization,
and evaluation processes. These advanced IT's include, among many others:
machine learning, fuzzy logic, virtual reality, genetic algorithms,
case-based reasoning, intelligent agents, logic programming, data mining,
neural networks, knowledge-based simulation and human computer interfaces.
Therefore, we are developing a Special Issue of the Journal of Decision
Systems with articles devoted to the following main research questions:
(a) how can advanced IT enhance DMSS ?;
(b) how can advanced IT affect the process of DMSS design,
implementation and evaluation?; and
(c) how can advanced IT be integrated in DMSS to modify organizational
structures and management practice?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
ISSUE MISSION AND AIMS:
This Special Issue's mission is to present state of the art on applied DMSS
integrating new IT. The main aims of this special issue are:
(1) to generate a compendium of quality applied papers on advanced IT
in DMSS, (2) to help diffuse scarce knowledge about effective
methods and strategies for successfully designing,
developing, implementing, and evaluating DMSS that integrate
advanced IT, and (3) to create an awareness among academicians and
practitioners about the relevance of DMSS in the current complex
and dynamic management environment.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
TOPICS SOUGHT:
Papers are solicited that contribute in these aims. Potential topics include,
but are not limited to:
(1) Cases of DMSS that integrate advanced IT in business, commerce
(including e-commerce), government, health care, banking, and
elsewhere, (2) Strategies that promote the design, development, and
implementation of successful DMSS that integrate advanced IT, (3)
Methodologies for integrating advanced IT in data, knowledge, model,
dialog, and feedback management , (4) Studies that compare the
effectiveness of advanced IT in DMSS versus other traditional IT,
and (5) Studies related with the effects of DMSS that integrate advanced IT,
on organizational structure and management practice.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
INSTRUCTIONS:
The suggested length for each manuscript will 20-25 double-spaced typed
pages, including graphs, tables, figures, and references. Original papers
should be written to conform with the Journal of Decision Systems style
guidelines document, which is available upon request. Papers will be
evaluated using a double blind peer-review process. A 4-page abstract is
requested before or on November 15, 2001. Please send all submissions
electronically to: forgionn(a)umbc.edu with copy to editors.dmss.jds(a)visto.com

SYSTEMIC ASPECTS OF COMPONENT-BASED SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
(SESSION D)
Chairpersons: Gerhard Chroust and Friedrich Stallinger
Kepler University Linz, Austria
Component-based System Development, i.e. the composition of systems from
existing
or newly developed components is hailed as one of the panaceas for problems
inherent to software and system development.
It promises higher quality, lower cost and shorter development time. While
purely
technical aspects seem to be largely understood, many questions of a wider
socio-technical-economic context are still open and need an answer.
These answers have to consider the whole, complex system development
environment,
especially the human factors, and therefore need an interdisciplinary
approach.
We encourage submissions of papers discussing systemic, cultural and
organizational
aspects of component-based system and software development.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Business Reporting and Data Assurance: The Role of Technology Solutions
Abstract Deadline November 1, 2001, Completed paper due March 15, 2002
Recent calls for timely, full disclosure by the SEC and more disclosure
by the FASB (on intangibles, non-financials, and forward-looking
information) indicate that digital economy is presenting unique
business
reporting challenges. In addition, the new digital economy presents
another unique set of challenges and opportunities to the world of
assurance services. For example, assurance at the data level provides
opportunities to assurance professionals to extend their services to
business community beyond the traditional audit.
The Extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) provides an XML-based
framework that the global business information supply chain can use to
create, exchange, and analyze financial reporting information
including, but not limited to, regulatory filings such as annual and
quarterly financial statements, general ledger information, and audit
schedules. XBRL is freely licensed and facilitates the automatic
exchange and reliable extraction of financial information among various
software applications anywhere in the world.
Papers and proposed presentations are invited for presentation at the
Conference on topics relevant to new business reporting mechanisms in
the digital economy, data assurance, XBRL specification and
implementations; and creating values for companies, customers and
shareholders. Topics may include but not limited to the following:
Demand for XML-based business information created and reported; how
timely business reporting technology creates value for companies,
customers and shareholders; examine potential demand for assurance
services at the data level; who will provide assurances at the data
level; examine benefits of data assurance towards continuous auditing;
issues and concerns about existing taxonomies; examination of HR-XML
taxonomy; how XBRL works with EBXML; applications of XBRL in financial
analysis, using XML to create business intelligence; issues about
positioning XBRL as the primary business reporting language; internal
company uses for XBRL; educational issues relevant to XBRL and its
implementation; and future directions of taxonomies and XBRL
applications; using XBRL General Ledger; XBRL IAS implementation
strategies.
We encourage participation from both academic researchers and
individuals in industry interested in XBRL, EBMXL, HR-XML, and other
types of XML-based languages.
You have an option to present your paper at the XBRL Conference: April
19, 2002 Bryant College Smithfield, Rhode Island
High quality papers selected by the reviewers will be considered for
publication in a monograph sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
For more information please see: http://web.bryant.edu/xbrl or call Dr.
Saeed Roohani 401 232-6168
