: CALL FOR PAPERS on a special issue of
: "Developing E-Commerce Systems: Current Practices and State-of-the-Art"
: -----------------------------------------------------------------------
: URL: http://cis.gsu.edu/~spurao/dbcfp/
: -----------------------------------------
:
: DataBase
: --------
: The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems, or DATA BASE for
: short, is putting together a special issue on the above topic.
: Contributions are invited focused on the topic of e-Commerce
: System Development.
:
: Focus of the Special Issue
: --------------------------
: The purpose of this special issue is to provide a forum for presenting
: descriptive and empirical research for understanding the complex,
: often contextual approaches to developing innovative e-commerce
: software solutions.
:
: Important Dates and Deadlines
: -----------------------------
: Communication of Intention with Abstract: 31 July 2000
: Submission of Manuscripts: 30 October 2000
: Initial Round of Reviews: 30 January 2001
: Resubmission of Revised Manuscripts: 30 April 2001
: Additional Reviews, as necessary, and Notification: 30 June 2001
: Final Papers Due: 31 July 2001
:
: Types of Contributions
: ----------------------
: For this special issue, we encourage descriptive studies such as
: experience reports, case studies, and studies conducted with an action
: research perspective focusing on single or multi-project initiatives
: for developing e-commerce solutions, that may be completed or in-
: progress. Surveys of current approaches for design and development
: of EC solutions are also encouraged. Besides providing a descriptive
: account of state-of-the art practices, potential contributions are
: also expected to compare and contrast these approaches with
: traditional systems development practices or approaches. Findings
: are expected to be discussed in relation to existing theories in
: systems development and electronic commerce to contribute to further
: development of these.
: In particular, descriptive studies backed by links to existing
: theories are welcome. In-depth case studies focusing on discovery
: of underlying assumptions and theoretical underpinnings, as well
: as other innovative research methods are also welcome. Surveys of
: current practices to shed light on specific practices followed
: will also be relevant.
:
: Topics of Interest
: ------------------
: Papers dealing with topics such as the following, with linkages to
: current theories or proposals for new theoretical perspectives, are
: particularly encouraged.
: -Experience reports from development and deployment of EC systems
: -Experiences with development processes for EC systems
: -Success stories or accounts of failed projects for EC systems
: -Accounts of applications of strategies for requirements engineering of EC
: projects
: -Studies of the management of EC system development projects
: -Studies of organizational practices to manage EC project portfolios
: -Surveys of EC solutions development approaches
: -Surveys of organizational practices to manage EC projects or EC
: portfolios
: -Reports of consulting practices for developing individual or families of
: EC solutions
: -Comparisons of traditional system development methods against EC
: development approaches
:
: Research Methods
: ----------------
: We prefer research submissions that are empirically based as opposed
: to purely theoretical research. Papers from both the intensive (e.g.,
: qualitative) and quantitative research traditions will find a forum in
: this issue. Papers pursuing either interpretive or positivist
: understanding in an empirical context, will be assessed according
: to criteria that are normally applied to such research in high-quality
: IS journals. The manuscripts should contain the research questions and
: research design with appropriate theoretical foundations, well-
: motivated and clearly stated; identify research methods and where
: necessary, explain these; and document the research results, clearly
: stating implications related to the findings.
:
: Instructions for Submission
: ---------------------------
: Authors are encouraged to send an abstract with intention of submission
: to Bjorn Erik Munkvold at Bjorn.E.Munkvold(a)hia.no or Sandeep Purao
: at spurao(a)gsu.edu. Completed manuscripts should be submitted, via e-mail
: as MS-Word attachment to Bjorn.E.Munkvold(a)hia.no. All submissions will

: Journal of AIS
: Volume 1, number 3
:
: The first two articles published in JAIS focused on Internet related
: issues ? web page design and legitimacy and acceptance of electronic
: journals. However, JAIS is mandated to address all fields of IS
: research. Thus, the current paper reverts to a longer established IS
: topic ? the role of IS in decision making.
:
: The authors are Giusseppi Forgionne of the University of Maryland
: Baltimore County and Rajiv Kohli of the University of Notre Dame and
: Holy Cross Health System.
:
: Management Support Systems endeavor to enhance support to
: decision-makers. The idea is to integrate executive information and
: expert system techniques into DSS so as to provide a more complete and
: better rounded support environment. Intuitively appealing as the concept
: appears, little work has been done to verify its effectiveness. This
: article presents an empirical investigation designed to assess the
: effectiveness of MSS in the context of strategic decision making.
:
: The paper describes a controlled laboratory experiment in which the
: subjects were required to forecast uncontrolled variables and to set
: values for decision variables. Subjects in the experimental group were
: provided an MSS with DSS, EIS, and Expert system components. The control
: group relied only on the DSS core.
:
: Analysis of the experimental results tends to support the proposition
: that MSS can enhance decision effectiveness as compared to the basic
: DSS.

: PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS
:
: Workshop
: "Modellierung und Spezifikation von Fachkomponenten"
:
: 12. Oktober 2000
: Universität Siegen
:
: Eine Veranstaltung im Rahmen der Fachtagung
: Modellierung betrieblicher Informationssysteme (MobIS 2000)
:
: VERANSTALTER
: Gesellschaft für Informatik
: Arbeitskreis 5.10.3
: Komponentenorientierte betriebliche Anwendungssysteme
: Fachgruppe 5.10
: Modellierung betrieblicher Informationssysteme (MobIS)
:
: THEMA DES WORKSHOPS
: Traditionelle Ingenieurdisziplinen zeichnen sich insbesondere dadurch aus,
: dass in der Regel verbindliche Standards (bzgl. Notation, Benennung,

: Research Article One
: Electronic Commerce: Implications for University Bookshops
:
: Claudia Loebbecke, University of Cologne & Copenhagen Business School
: Kristoffer Nilaus, Copenhagen Business School
: Philip Powell, University of Bath
:
: This paper investigates the plight of small university bookshops that are
: increasingly experiencing the competitive impact of electronic commerce.
: The paper provides an industry structure and a competitor analysis in order
: to develop measures that university bookshops may take to withstand the
: competitive pressures. Using the example of a medium-size Danish
: university bookshop, the paper argues that university bookshops should no
: longer consider themselves solely to be in book retailing. Instead, soon,
: their competitive advantage will come from their ability to collect
: information on academics' book recommendations and on the extent to which
: they can keep this information from their competitors and customers until
: sales have been made. Hence, the paper suggests that the major
: opportunities for university bookshops will be to build up targeted on-line
: communities with members stemming mainly from faculty and student bodies.

: Research Article Two
: Identifying Potential Loan Defaulters in the Credit Union Environment:
: A Comparative Analysis of Statistical and Neural Network Models
:
: Rashmi Malhotra, Saint Joseph University
: D.K. Malhotra, Philadelphia University
:
: A number of credit-scoring models, that attempt to accurately classify
: consumer loan applications as potentially "good" or "bad", have been
: developed to aid traditional judgmental (intuitive) methods. This study
: explores the performance of different neural network models:
: backpropagation with adaptive learning, backpropagation with
: Levenberg-Marquardt approach, and Learning Vector Quantization to identify
: problem loans from among the applications the loan officer has initially
: screened. Field data from 12 case organizations (credit unions) was
: analyzed to evaluate the performance of these three neural network
: techniques against the logistics regression model. The neural network
: models' performance is found to be significantly better in identifying
: potential "bad" loans.

: MISSION: In this era of uncontrollable explosion of information technology
: (IT) and its applications, the gap between theory and practice, frameworks
: and applications keeps widening. This novel journal will focus on cases and
: applications that explain existing theories and concepts or that help in
: building new theories and frameworks. This journal should be of great value
: to professors and students as well as researchers and practitioners of IT.
: It is a refereed international quarterly journal that is supported by IT
: scholars from all over the world. Finally, the journal is international in
: all respects: content, article authorship, readership, and the editorial
: board.
:
: SCOPE and COVERAGE: JITCA will publish articles about cases and
: applications studies focusing on any size of organization: start-up, small,
: medium, large, or multinational company. These cases and applications can
: originate from any country in the world: advanced, newly industrialized,
: developing, or under-developed. Furthermore, the primary thrust of a case
: or application may include artificial intelligence, business process
: reengineering, cross-cultural issues, cybernetics, decision support

: article. Research articles will be based on actual case studies and/or
: applications studies utilizing case study, field study, and/or field
: experiment research methodology (JITCA, volume 1, number 4, editorial
: preface). Each teaching case submission to JITCA will include three
: components: the case itself, a summary research note, and a detailed
: teaching note. These three components will be reviewed as a package; the
: journal's decision to publish the case will be determined by the quality of
: the case itself and the accompanying research and teaching notes. The most
: important contribution of this journal will be to disseminate current and
: relevant IT cases and applications to educators, managers, practitioners,
: and researchers all over the world.
:
: CALL for MANUSCRIPTS: The journal encourages manuscript submissions from
: authors all over the world, from academia, government, and industry. The

: bearing on the journal's mission. Practitioner input will be regularly
: solicited from time-to-time through the industry editor(s) of JITCA. To
: utilize cutting edge IT, authors are strongly encouraged to make their
: submissions electronically to the editor-in-chief by attaching file(s) in
: appropriate format.
:
: REVIEW PROCESS: Each suitable article is double blind-reviewed by three
: members of the editorial review board. A final recommendation is made by
: the Editor-in-Chief in consultation with an Associate Editor. If a revision
: is recommended, the revised paper is sent for a final approval to one of
: the Associate Editors.
:
: STYLE: Submitted manuscripts must be written in the APA (American
: Psychological Association) editorial style. Footnotes are not allowed.
: Endnotes should be kept to a minimum; instead the material should be
: incorporated in the body of the paper. References should be listed in
: alphabetical order. The suggested length is about 20 pages not counting
: references, tables, and figures. The manuscript should be typed
: double-spaced.

:
: Article Four:
: Virtual Learning Networks in Higher Education: The Case of Egypt's Regional
: IT Institute
: SHERIF KAMEL, American University in Cairo, Egypt
:
: Virtual organizations are spreading worldwide in different sectors. However,
: most of the publications address theoretical foundations;
: as for the practical implementations, they are not well reported in the
: literature. This paper addresses a case of a virtual organization
: in the field of knowledge. Today, the learning process is becoming a vital
: factor in business and socioeconomic growth where the role
: of information and communication technology is having a growing and an
: innovative impact. The case of the Regional IT Institute,
: established in 1992, targeting educating graduate students while being in
: Egypt through a number of partnerships with organizations
: in Europe and the United States reflects the realization of a number of
: related elements to virtual organizations. The case provides
: many lessons to be replicated that demonstrate the opportunity to expand in
: exchanging the wealth of knowledge across societies
: using a hybrid of forms for virtual organizations.
