>
> INTRODUCTION
>
> The increasing application of collaborative computing and multimedia
> document handling in the majority of government, business and educational
> intra- and internets provides enormous sources of various data, organized in
> different structures and formats. No wonder researchers in multimedia turned
> towards the field of data mining and knowledge discovery in databases in the
> search for techniques for improving the indexing and retrieval of multimedia
> information. In the beginning, a variety of techniques from machine
> discovery, statistics, databases, knowledge acquisition, machine learning,
> data visualization, image analysis, high performance computing, and
> knowledge-based systems, have been used mainly as a research handcraft
> activity. The development of multimedia databases and their query interfaces
> recall again the idea of incorporating data mining methods for dynamic
> indexing. Recently data mining efforts have focused in less formalized
> fields of art, design, hypermedia information systems, case-based reasoning
> and computational modeling of creativity. These and similar fields use
> variety of data sources, incorporated through sophisticated digital media
> data structures. As a result there is an urgent need for new techniques and
> tools that can transform these rich data into useful information and
> knowledge.
>
> The aim of this workshop is to bring together experts in analysis of digital
> media content, state-of-art data mining and knowledge discovery in
> multimedia database systems, knowledge engineers and domain experts from
> different applied disciplines with potential in multimedia data mining.
>
> TOPICS OF INTEREST
>
> The major topics of the workshop include but are not limited to:
>
> - multimedia data mining methods and algorithms;
> - electronic documents - multimedia data representation and reuse of
> discovered knowledge;
> - content-based search, retrieval, and discovery methods;
> - uncertainty management in multimedia data mining;
> - complexity, efficiency and scalability of multimedia data mining
> algorithms;
> - the incorporation of domain knowledge;
> - multimedia data mining and interactive exploration;
> - mining and analysis of data generated by virtual reality systems;
> - data mining of virtual worlds;
> - multimedia data visualization and man-machine interfaces;
> - integrated data mining of text and image data;
> - data analysis of video and audio data;
> - representation of discovered knowledge;
> - active storage for data mining in multimedia;
> - mining from unstructured and semi-structured data;
> - web-content mining;
> - data mining from XML documents;
> - mining from GIS.

> DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT OF DATA WAREHOUSES (DMDW'2000)
>
> 2nd International Workshop
>
> In conjunction with the 12th Conference on Advanced Information Systems
> Engineering (CAiSE) 2000
>
> June 5-6, 2000, Stockholm, Sweden
>
> Data Warehousing embraces technology and industrial practice to
> systematically collect data from an enterprise and to use that data in
> annotated and aggregated form for managing the enterprise based on
> business decisions. Although many database techniques have been
> revisited or newly developed in the context of data warehouses,
> including view maintenance and applications such as OLAP and data
> mining, little attention has been paid to the design and management of
> data warehouses to appropriately serve their purposes, i.e., to
> support the management of a given enterprise. This workshop is
> intended as a forum to fill this gap. It will be the second in a
> series of workshops that started at CAiSE'99 in Heidelberg,
> Germany. The first workshop at CAiSE'99 was very successful and
> attracted participants both from industry and the research community.
>
> We cordially invite participants both from the application industry
> and research to submit papers to the second workshop. An incomplete

> Call For Papers:
>
> Web-based Infrastructures and
> Coordination Architectures for Collaborative Enterprises
>
> This workshop continues two threads of workshops in the WETICE series that
> were held over the last four years. In general these workshops addressed the
> question of how Web techniques can be used to achieve or to improve
> collaboration within or between organizations, and which coordination
> mechanisms could be used in such an architecture.
>
> This problem area addresses both technical and organizational issues. The
> involved organizations are typically enterprises in different spheres of
> power such that it is not reasonable to require a common structure, or to
> align the structure for a certain collaboration purpose. But how can a
> system enable the participants for flexible and effective collaboration?
>
> Should we concentrate on developing an infrastructure for sharing artifacts
> (e.g., documents, files, data)? Should we develop a shared language (e.g.,
> XML, RDF) to exchange business information which represents an external
> representation of the private artifacts? Or will we need a richer
> communication infrastructure supporting shared virtual spaces (e.g., tuple
> spaces, MUDs) where people are "in the system" rather than purely using
> artifacts of a system?
>
> While the above issues address the primitive level of collaboration and
> coordination, their effective use requires higher-level mechanisms and
> procedures as well. In fact, a collaborative application can reflect the
> real-world organizations overlaying the system or even become part of the
> organization itself. The system must therefore both enforce specific
> organizational rules (e.g. workflow rules) and facilitate knowledge
> management and exchange. From this perspective, the workshop is interested
> not only in "collaborative systems", but also in the models and
> infrastructures needed for enabling human organizations, or hybrid
> organizations made up of both human and software agents/processes, to
> effectively interact and cooperate.
>
> A list of topics of interest includes (but is not limited to):
>
> Collaborative Applications
> o virtual organisations
> o show case scenarios
> o reports on hands-on experiences
> Infrastructure and Technology
> o coordination models and languages for the Web
> o workflow languages
> o languages and architectures for Web interoperability
> o use of recent Internet and Web standards
> o agent based approaches
> o support for mobile users and software
> Development of Collaborative Applications
> o engineering methodologies for collaborative Web applications
> o collaboration versus competition
> o development methodologies, tools and platforms
> o coordination patterns
>
> Workshop Organization
>
> Each paper will be reviewed by at least three reviewers. The workshop will
> consist of 3 sessions presenting and discussing papers and a final working

>
> WET ICE is an annual, international forum for state-of-the-art research in
> enabling technologies for collaboration.
>
> WET ICE 2000 will consist of parallel, three-day workshops on different
> topics related to collaboration technology. Each workshop will include paper
> presentations and working group discussions, with additional joint keynote
> sessions and a final joint session to summarize each groups' findings.
>
> What sets WET ICE apart from larger conferences is that the workshops are
> kept small enough to promote fruitful discussions on the latest technology
> developments, directions, problems, and requirements. Each group will
> produce a summary report which will appear in the post-proceedings to be
> published by IEEE Computer Society Press.
>
> Paper submissions are not required for participation in the workshops.
> However, check the home page of the workshop in which you are interested --
> some workshop organizers may require you to submit a brief position paper.
>
> Some of the papers accepted for the workshops, and which were peer-reviewed
> by a minimum of three people, will be included in the post-proceedings.
> Paper submissions should be sent directly to the organizers of the workshop
> in which you are interested; see the individual workshop pages, which are
> linked to the left column of this page, for submission information.

Call for Papers & Participation
An incomplete
list of research and experience topics to be discussed at the workshop
is given below. We especially encourage experts of the DW application
industry to submit experience papers.
Research Topics
* Organization of meta-data management
* Design methods for data warehouses
* View selection for data warehouse materialization
* Conceptual vs. logical modeling of multi-dimensional data
* Measuring data warehouse quality
* Verification of design goals and information needs
* Data warehouse functionality in languages like SQL
(e.g., OLAP operators)
* Query optimization
* Data warehouse evolution
* Data Warehouse security
* Temporal aspects
Experience Topics
* Integration of a data warehouse into an organization's
business processes
* Handling federations of data warehouses
* Motivation for installing a data warehouse
* Experience with data warehouse software and tools
* Problems and challenges in data warehouse usage (e.g., coping with
data inconsistency, performance issues)
* User acceptance of data warehouses
* Impact of OLAP and data mining on business decisions
* Success stories of data warehouse exploitation
Submission Instructions
Papers up to a maximum of 5000 words (experience papers up to 2500
words) should be submitted in electronic form (Standard Postscript
or PDF) via Email to Martin Staudt, Swiss Life, IS Research, PO Box,
CH-8022 Zurich, Switzerland
martin.staudt(a)swisslife.ch
by the submission deadline (see below). More information about the
workshop is available via

:
: 6th Workshop on Open Hypermedia Systems
: (http://www.ifs.uni-linz.ac.at/~sre/ohs6/)
:
: in conjunction with
: Hypertext 2000
: San Antonio, TX, May 30 2000
: (http://www.ht00.org/)
:
: The 6th Workshop on Open Hypermedia Systems (OHS6) will be held in
: conjunction with Hypertext 2000, the 11th of the premier ACM
: conferences on hypertext and hypermedia. The workshop is scheduled
: for Tuesday May 30, 2000.
:
: WORKSHOP INTRODUCTION & HISTORY
:
: An Open Hypermedia System (OHS) is typically a middleware
: component which provides hypermedia functionality to all
: applications on the users' desktop. Hence, existing tools and
: applications can be hypermedia enabled using the functionality
: provided by OHSs.
:
: Starting with OHS1 (held at ECHT '94 Edinburgh, Scotland),
: a series of workshops around this overall theme of OHSs has
: been organized: OHS2 (held at Hypertext '96 Washington, D.C.),
: OHS3 (held at Hypertext '97 in sunny Southampton, UK), OHS4 (held
: at Hypertext '98 in Pittsburgh, PA), and OHS5 (held at Hypertext
: '99 in Darmstadt, Germany).
:
: The OHS community has established itself as a very active part of
: the hypermedia research community. In March 1996, members of the
: OHS community formed the Open Hypermedia Systems Working
: Group (OHSWG). Since then, the OHSWG has been pursuing the
: difficult and rewarding task of addressing interoperability
: amongst Open Hypermedia Systems. Proposals for reference
: architectures, protocols for Open Hypermedia Systems,
: application scenarios, the distinction between different
: hypertext application domains, issues of OHS and Web
: integration, and many more contributions from both
: researchers and practitioners build the repertoire of subjects
: that have been addressed at previous workshops (for an overview of
: these see http://www.aue.auc.dk/~kock/HomePage/events.html).
:
: WORKSHOP THEME & POSITION PAPERS
:
: Workshop papers should clearly state the author's view of important
: results or research topics that should be addressed at the workshop.
: Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
:
: * Interoperability and standardisation issues in OHS,
: including architectural issues, protocols, naming, etc.
: * Application scenarios, experiences, hypertext domains,
: and requirements for OHSs
: * WWW and OHS settings
: * Media aspects of OHSs such as synchronisation of contents and
: link data, etc.
: * Presentation aspects including issues of context awareness, etc.
: * Progress reports by OHSWG subgroup chairs
:
: If you are in doubt whether your subject is appropriate for OHS6
: feel free to contact the organiser.
:
: Accepted papers will be published as Post-workshop Proceedings in
: Springer's LNCS Series. Papers should be 7 to 10 pages A4 in
: length and should be formatted according to Springer's LNCS
: guidelines (see also the workshop Web page and the LNCS
: Author's Guidelines
: http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html). Submit your
: paper via email to sre(a)ifs.uni-linz.ac.at not later than Monday,
: April 3 2000.
:
: IMPORTANT DATES
:
: * Position papers due Mon, Apr 3, 2000
: * Notification of acceptance Fri, Apr 28, 2000
: * Workshop date Tue, May 30, 2000
: * Final version of paper due Mon, Jun 12, 2000
